25.01.2022 A massive thank you to the Department of Biodeversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Margaret River Independent School, the Friends of Redgate Beach and the wonderful folk who turned out on Sunday to give Redgate Beach some love and continue the dune restoration work behind the main beach. The team installed some coir logs, hauled and placed a pile of brush and planted a swath of pigface and spinifex to help stabilise the dune that had been degraded over many years through inappropriate access over the dune and fragile coastal vegetation. The project was initiated by Nature Conservation's Caring for Coast Program generously supported by the Line in the Sand Philanthropic Group.
24.01.2022 Nature Conservation is working with the Ngari Capes Marine Park staff through its Caring for Coast Collaborative Group and hope to partner on community awareness raising and education initiatives. Great to see information going out about the important zones in the marine park and how you can help to protect this special marine environment.

20.01.2022 WEED IN THE SPOTLIGHT Have you seen this weed at your place? SWEET PITTOSPORUM (Pittosporum undulatum) ... A bushy tree, that grows to 8 m in height. The leaves are between 6 to 15 cm long with wavy edges. White to cream coloured flowers grow in clusters around October to November. Fruit are orange and round fruit. When the fruit opens, it releases small seeds in a sticky pulp. Plants produce seed by around 5 years of age. Pittosporum grows quickly after fire or disturbance and can shade out and out compete native plants. Seeds are dispersed by birds and mammals. HOW YOU CAN HELP AT YOUR PLACE Manually remove small plants including roots Monitor areas post burn and treat for pittosporum Dispose of garden waste responsibly in your FOGO bin Larger trees can be felled and stumps treated to avoid resprouting. For more details visit. http://www.herbiguide.com.au/Descriptions/hg_Pittosporum

14.01.2022 Congratulations to the Nannas for Native Forests for keeping the pressure on to end logging of our native forests. Something tells us these women mean business!
14.01.2022 Wow! Had to share!
13.01.2022 You’d be forgiven for thinking arum lilies are difficult to kill because they spread so easily, but the plant itself isn’t difficult to kill at all. In fact, with just the smallest amount of herbicide carefully applied and a coordinated approach, we’re confident that we’ll get the upper hand over these invasive weeds. With support from our Arum Lily Blitz, hundreds of properties just like this one have been reclaimed and restored, and we want to help you do the same. Register at https://www.natureconservation.org.au//co/arum-lily-blitz/ to access free herbicide, contractor subsidies, resources, support and more.
12.01.2022 What a special environment for kids to learn from.
12.01.2022 Amazing effort today by the Friends of Rendall Close Weir caring for the popular community river reserve. Volunteers planted in 110 local native seedlings on the waters edge and in upland areas to protect the river bank and provide habitat for local wildlife. Nature Conservation’s trusty bush regenerator Rick Ensley supervised, providing advice on what and where to plant.... Volunteers are calling on adults, kids and dogs who visit the weir to give the seedlings time to establish by keeping clear of the planting area. Let’s give nature the respect and care it deserves! Nature Conservation’s support to friends of reserve groups is generously funded by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River’s Environmental Management Fund.
12.01.2022 We all love Redgate Beach and today is the day to give the beach some love. Our Coastal Restoration Officer, Drew McKenzie will be down at Redgate between 2.00-4.00 pm today and could use some volunteers to help with brushing and planting of native dunes species. Why not rock up and lend a hand!

09.01.2022 Calling all part-time locals! You might not know how bad the arum lily problem has gotten especially if you’re only here in the warmer months but trust us, it’s bad. The good news is we’re working on it and we’ve got people like Penny and Grant who have almost completely eradicated arums at their Redgate property and they’ve managed that only living here part-time. Through our region-wide Arum Lily Blitz, we’re supporting everyone in eradicating this invasive weed. We’...re offering support, free herbicide and subsidies for contractors. Now we just need to make sure everyone, including part-timers, are getting the message. Do you know any holiday home owners? Tag them below, or share this message with them. And most importantly, register at : https://www.natureconservation.org.au//co/arum-lily-blitz/
08.01.2022 What a night! A great turn out to the Capes Coastal Forum. Inspiring discussions about how our community might drive a behavioural code or pledge to inspire respect and care for our coast. Stay tuned for more opportunities for the community to get involved in this exciting initiative. Thanks to Coastswap, Coastwest Grants and the Line in the Sand Philanthopic Group for their generous support for this event.
08.01.2022 #summerbirding is here and the weather is starting to warm up. Extreme hot weather can pose a threat to native birds, but there is something everyone can do to... help! One of the best ways to help birds beat the heat is to provide a water source in your garden. Adding a bird bath may also attract new species, which is a win for native birds and bird watchers alike! To read more about how to set up bird bath, head on over to the Birds in Backyards team website: https://www.birdsinbackyards.net/Bird-Baths Our Birds in Backyards program is a great way to get involved in bird conservation at a local level by participating in online surveys, learning more about Australian birds and their habitats and by creating bird-friendly spaces in your garden and local community. 07.01.2022 Meet the quenda - a serious ecosystem engineer! This cute critter is a ground dwelling marsupial of the bandicoot family and is endemic to WA's south-west. But did you know quenda are serious diggers?? Research shows one busy quenda can dig up to 45 conical foraging pits a night in search of fungi, tubers and invertebrates - moving more than 10kg of soil. That's almost 4 tonnes a year! From cycling nurtients to aerating the soil and spreading seed and fungal spores, they're a... vital species - and our bush wouldn't look the same! (Oh, and their pouches face backwards so they don't fill up with soil during all that digging!!) Find loads of info about creating habitat for quenda and other native animals on your property by registering for our For Nature program at https://www.natureconservation.org.au/for-nature/ Or check out our quenda fact sheet at https://www.natureconservation.org.au//Quenda-Our-Ecosyste

03.01.2022 Nature Conservation was saddened to hear about a serious act of environmental vandalism in our local bushland earlier in the week. Over 30 trees have been illegally cut down in bushland on the edge of Margaret River. The Shire has been notified but the bushland is not under their jurisdiction so the vesting State agency has been notified and will be investigating. This type of damage to natural vegetation and habitats is just not ok, especially when our beautiful Nannas for ...Native Forests are fighting hard to protect our remaining native forests. If anyone knows who might be responsible for this illegal act please contact our office on 9757 2202 and we will pass on details to the investigators.
