23.01.2022 Riding your horse on an empty stomach will put him at risk of stomach ulcers. Stomach ulcers hurt! So in an attempt to avoid the pain your horse may misbehave ...to stop you riding him. Or he may grudgingly work for you, but will be sour and unhappy. Neither is fun for both of you. But there is an easy solution! Keep your horses stomach full. Especially before you ask him to work! The horses stomach has been designed to always be full. Horses secrete strong hydrochloric acid in the lower section of their stomach. So the lower section was smart enough to protect itself with thick mucus. That way the acid doesnt burn the flesh. BUT, the top part of the stomach is totally unprotected from the acid. It was protected only by the fact the horses stomach was always full of fibre. This fibre was able to stop the acid from the lower part of the stomach from splashing to the top part. But, with our modern day meal feeding practices, it is common for horses to end up with an empty stomach. When you ride them, the movement of walk, trot, canter, gallop means the acid gets splashed around, and ends up burning the flesh of the upper stomach, causing ulcers. Want to learn more? 23.01.2022 I just wanted to say a big thank you for all the holiday Program participants. For their commitment to improving & following instruction so well, for being patient & working so well together. Everyone always looks out for the horses welfare making sure they had hay, water, clean coats & thoroughly cleaned hooves. Learning horse care & training techniques on the ground through ground work are just as important as learning to ride. We had kids trying bareback riding for the fir...st time aswell, getting their balance & posture even better than before. I personally had such a fantastic time seeing so many improvements in kids riding skills, achievements in learning good timing, and staying in time with their rising trot. It’s truely is a journey & a wonderful way to connect with your own body awareness, horse sense & nature. Thinking like the horse & learning about how horses behave can certainly make us more aware of our own safety around horses. Horses can teach us so much, especially patients, kindness & to stay focused. I have organised term lessons with most clients. If you do not have a time & wanted to book in for either weekly or fortnightly lessons I have acouple places available, contact me on 0412218221 Thanks Maree

18.01.2022 Do you know how old your horse really is??? For those asking about the 1-3 years range... It varies because of the gender, husbandry )domestict x wild) and bree...ds, like a large Warmblood and an arabian, for example. The bones, growth plates and cartilages mature slightly different. The big breeds are delayed. An the jump to a 3 year old is related to reproductive maturation. At 2.5 years of age mares n stallions in the wild start breeding and conceiving. Thats like a 15 year old human. Ideally being 3 years of age helps to have a good pregnancy and good lactation for the newborn. See more

13.01.2022 Lots of big smiles & great riding today. Its so great to see everyone progressing & building confidence each ride.

13.01.2022 A horse’s brain is about a third the weight and size of ours. They aren’t stupid, just highly specialized for movement. Our priorities are not their priorities.... They can’t see things from our point of view, and can never think like we do. It’s up to us to provide what they need and speak their language. They don’t care about our goals or the discipline we ride. They care about their balance, and their sense of security. If you can’t provide those things, our goals to them are meaningless, and something they will actively resist to take care of themselves. See more

08.01.2022 Trailblazing on a Rangefinder - Philippa Glennen Philippa Glennen from the Western District (Vic), on her big rangy chestnut gelding Rangefinder, was the first ...woman selected to compete for Australia in a three day event Olympic team. The year was 1980 and the games were to be in Moscow. However Australian equestrian teams were caught up in a boycott of the Games led by the US, and the top nations competed instead in an alternative Olympics the World Championships held that year in Fontainbleau, France. Philippa was only 21. Imagine being in a team with your idols - veterans Wayne Roycroft (Laurenson) and Merv Bennett (Regal Reign) and a young Andrew Hoy (Davey). They upheld Australia's reputation as an eventing power, and won the bronze. Legend Bill Roycroft, five times Olympian, was coach and team manager. Philippa Glennen is from a family of riders, with all eight children riding, although none ride now. In their pony club days, the Glennen family helped Emu Creek Pony Club become a very successful club which was hard to beat. Judy is the only member of the family who still has involvement with horses, being employed as a trackwork supervisor at Warrnambool Racing Club. Judy and Louise enjoy horse racing socially. More on the Moscow Olympics . . . The boycott by equestrians included the top nations, such as West Germany, Australia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Only eleven nations competed in the equestrian events at Moscow - Austria, Bulgaria, Guatemala, Finland, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Romania, and the USSR. As expected, relative unknowns filled the medal places. * Vicky Roycroft technically became the first woman Australian Olympic eventer four years later, in 1984, at the Los Angeles Olympics.
