18.01.2022 If you’ve bought over the counter health supplements and not noticed a shred of difference, here’s a few reasons why: WRONG DOSE ~ dose is highly bioindividual. That means the dose will depend on what you’ve got going on! We naturopaths have therapeutic dosage ranges that often differ to that of the internet. Also, the dose recommended on the label of your store bought supplement needs to be safe for the general public to self prescribe. That means it’s likely not the best ...dose for actually getting results. POOR QUALITY ~ when it comes to supplements, you get what you pay for. The cheapest fish oil in the bargain bin at the chemist is NOT going to be the best on the market. A tip for fish oil - if you snip open a fish oil capsule over the sink and it smells like a bag of bait that got left in the car during your childhood fishing trip with your dad, it’s RANCID. Rancidity means the healthy fats have gone off and are going to cause more inflammation than they resolve. Quality is so important when it comes to results. Please don’t write off the power of natural medicines just because the product you picked didn’t work. WRONG SUPPLEMENT ~ you may have been taking a supplement that just wasn’t right for you in the first place. Maybe you were taking something for an issue you didn’t even have and were missing the mark elsewhere. Eg perhaps you were taking a herbal supplement when what you actually need is zinc. SO if you’ve tried everything and nothing has worked, it might be time to get an expert opinion and do a cull of your supplements. Often less is more. Often you’ll spend less too, by making the right investment in the right products for you! There are definitely some good retail, over the counter options out there. But we keep the good stuff out back - the high quality, potent nutritional and herbal supplements need to be kept under lock and key. That’s because they are powerful, they do work, and in the wrong hands they can make things worse rather than make things better. Only qualified health practitioners have access to these medicines because we have the training and experience in how to use them effectively!

13.01.2022 YOU ARE WHAT YOU ABSORB ~ Not what you eat! After all, what’s the point of eating an amazing array of healthy foods if your gut isn’t functioning well enough to digest and absorb it? Once your food is broken down, it enters the small intestine which looks a lot like this Each little wiggly bit is lined with even tinier hair like projections. These are microvilli and they give the gut an incredible amount of surface area. In fact the actual lining in parts is just one cell t...hick! That’s microscopic - it’s supposed to be a semi-permeable barrier - that means it lets nutrients and other small molecules through into the blood stream. When the lining is intact it keeps bigger particles of food, proteins and whatnot out. When the gut is leaky due to inflammation and irritation in the gut lining, the barrier becomes more permeable and lets the bigger more problematic things through! Which triggers alarm bells for the immune system and a whole cascade of inflammation gets set off. Inflammation in the gut = inflammation in the blood -> skin (and other organs including the brain) The food you eat can support or damage your gut lining. For instance, gluten is a sharp little protein that effectively shaves the tips off these little microvilli (which is where things like fats and B12 are absorbed) meaning wheat damages the gut and impacts nutrient absorption. Proteins in dairy commonly trigger inflammation in the gut as well - especially modern dairy which is highly processed and stripped of all the good stuff. These foods can still contribute to inflammation in the skin and brain even if you don’t experience acute digestive symptoms like bloating. That's typically followed by a restless and fitful night's sleep and the next day demands all the energy, motivation, and cajones. And so on, it goes. Our brain needs a break from all the input so it can assimilate, it never stops working for us. A break could be a walk, meditating, sitting without our phones and TVs, removing entertainment devices from our bedrooms and strengthening our work boundaries so that we're not always on. Give it safety and your adrenals will chill for a second and normalise the amount of stress hormones and adrenal androgens (like DHEA) they produce. 05.01.2022 GREENS // Two cups a day of leafy green vegetables like: roquette spinach silverbeet lettuce... beetroot greens bok choy and other Asian greens fresh herbs: parsley, coriander, mint and dill Are some of the best veggies you can be putting in your body to support your skin! Something I commonly see in my acne clients is acidity. This means the fluid in your body is in a more acidic state, than alkaline. Remember that all the cells in our body contain fluid and are surrounded by fluid! We are mostly made of fluid. If this fluid is acidic, it increases inflammation in our cells and so in our body. When our cells are inflamed and under stress, they can’t do their job as well. Acidity also drives up stress hormone production which again, is going to flare up chronic conditions like acne. The body tries to get rid of acids in the urine and in a pinch, will siphon crucial minerals like magnesium and potassium out of our bones and connective tissue, in order to make clearing these acids easier Obviously not ideal. Eating greens like the above is a way to get those alkalising minerals in (plus a whole host of other skin loving nutrients like fibre, water, vitamin C, B group vitamins and antioxidants!) The surest way to know whether you are in a more acidic state is to check your electrolytes in blood. Like all bitter vegetables, globe artichokes really get the bile flowing ~ we need bile to excrete oestrogen and to break down healthy fats from our food so we can absorb those precious omegas! Traditionally, Globe Artichoke is used as a liver tonic, to protect and restore healthy liver function and to clear the complexion (praise be) ... How to know what is driving your acne. This doesn’t encompass everything (there will be a part 2) but I thought I’d start with the big three: HORMONES usually androgen excess, not enough progesterone production, mixed in with the many different things oestrogen can be doing... STRESS and the nervous system at large - your nervous system talks to every tissue and organ in the body. It’s running the show! GUT including the liver - will influence your nutrient levels, bacterial growth, your level of immune system activity and inflammation.
