15.01.2022 Unfortunately, too many Australians fall victim to scams - and this is a unique one, where the firm tried cloaking itself as a separate and well regarded business. The result...over $7M scammed. If dealing with cold callers, do not give information to the cold callers - ask for their contact details, then when you have those contact details - do your own due diligence before proceeding. Tell them you will call them back. Check the website for the business they purport to ...be with - does it have the same or similar emails, telephone numbers, etc? Do an ABN look up with ASIC and see when their ABN suggests they started trading - if recently, then they could be a phoenix (scam) company. If you seriously are contemplating dealing with the business, do not be afraid to ask for extended information on the structure and any relationships they have - including referees. But, be careful, referees can be catfishes planted to praise the cold caller - and not a true referee. Refer to scamwatch.gov.au. Have their been complaints about the business. Lastly, if you truly want to proceed with a cold caller, then do not hesitate to ask your lawyer to review the documents before signing anything! A small fee paid for contract review, is far less than the fee which it will take to back you out of a scam and/or inappropriate arrangement.
