23.01.2022 HEALTH ALERT FOR PETS IN CLONCURRY AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS. We have diagnosed multiple cases of Heartworm disease recently here at NAVG therefore now more than ever it is important to ensure that your dogs are protected against heartworm. Heartworm is a very serious disease that is fatal if left untreated. It is a parasite that is transmitted from dog to dog via mosquitoes, so even if your pet does not commonly see other dogs, it can still catch heart worm! Mosquitos injec...t larvae into the blood stream which then grow into large worms that lodge in the heart and lung vessels, causing severe respiratory and cardiac disease and eventually multi-organ failure. If your pet is not protected against heart worm (note most regular worming tablets DO NOT include heart worm prevention) then please contact us at the clinic and we can discuss the best way to keep your pet safe. This is a picture of Zorro, Zorro has recently been in for his heart worm injection, and now he can rest easy knowing he is protected!

12.01.2022 If you are planning to escape to coast over Christmas and taking your dog and/or cat with you we want to remind you to protect them from paralysis ticks. These ticks are one of the most dangerous threats to your pets health. Paralysis ticks are external blood-sucking parasites, they produce a toxin that affects the nervous system of the host in this case, your pet. They are found in coastal areas, particularly during the warmer months. WHAT TO LOOK FOR? If your dog an...d cat comes in contact with a paralysis tick they will experience paralysis in various forms. Typically, they will start with a weakness in their back legs and then this will progress to the all four legs being paralysied. Some other symptoms may be: - Wobbly legs or unsteady on their feetLoss of appetite - Vomiting or dry retching - Excessive salivation - Coughing How do I prevent my pet from paralysis ticks? If your dog likes to spend time outdoors, there is no way to prevent them from coming into contact with them. The best way to protect your dog is to physically check them daily. Unfortunately, these ticks can get into small crevices which may be missed. We recommend physical checks of your pets daily as well as the preventative treatments, such as Nexgard and Bravecto. NB: Make sure you never use a dog tick product on a cat as this can be potentially fatal. Contact our team to discuss the best solution your pets at our Cloncurry clinic 4742 1254 #vets #cloncurry #juliacreek #outback #animalwelfare #dog #cattle #aussieag #northaustralianvets #mixedvetpractice #horses #northqueensland #cat #animals #veterinaryprofessional #cattle #equinecare #agriculture #ticks #beachholiday See more
