11.01.2022 This week #MusicianMonday features the first member from Royal Australian Navy Band Western Australia - LSMUSN Tiana Horlock! The reserve band in Perth are a f...antastic and committed team who, directed by only two full-time Musicians, support HMAS Stirling, Fleet Base West, Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce and the wider state, in addition to their civilian jobs! My name is Tiana Horlock. I am a Leading Seaman Musician with the RAN Band WA. I learned about the RAN Band through my time with the Australian Navy Cadets. I spent my entire adolescence as a cadet and had many great experiences through the organisation. Part of that was doing work experience with the band as a side drummer. We performed many ceremonial sunsets and marching displays and the experience had me hooked. In 2010, when the time was right for me, I joined the Navy Band as a Reservist. When I joined I was primarily a side-drummer, but I also played the piano. I spent the early years of my service developing my skills in the different styles the band played with the support of mentors with many years' experience. This experience served me well when a series of retirements led to me being the sole pianist for the band. It was at this time that we also had a reduction in vocalists so I was given the opportunity to perform as a backing vocalist. I love playing and singing at the same time so, while it was challenging, I really enjoyed it! It also led me to become part of a smaller ensemble within the RAN Band WA, which focused on contemporary music. With new members now joining the band, and my recent promotion to Leading Seaman, my position in the band has taken on a new direction. I now have the opportunity to mentor junior members of the band in both keyboard and side drum, whilst also drawing from their musical experience. I chose to be a Reserve Musician as it offered balance between my civilian life and music. When I joined I was working full time in administration and playing music was a hobby. The band offered me a place to play music while allowing me to continue my other chosen work. In time, the members of the band became my family and social group and they continue to be my support network of friends. Now I am married with two small children, and I am still able to offer my service to the band. I still get to enjoy playing music and watching and being a part of the changes that time brings. At this moment in my life, the best part by far is watching my children embrace the music and sense of pride that my being in the RAN Band WA has brought into our home.
