23.01.2022 A message from Kristine Scheul, NAWIC National Chairperson. Happy new year and welcome to 2020, the 25th year of NAWIC. The words below came from the wife of a volunteer Rural Firefighter in response to a statement that the volunteers fighting the fires want to be there.... Like many, I have mostly had the luxury of watching this bushfire tragedy unfold from a relatively comfortable distance. Many of our friends and colleagues in the construction industry, however, have lost everything. I would like the members of NAWIC to consider what special skills they have at this time to help our nation rebuild and re-establish. Our industry is about building and creation in a country of extremes. NAWIC is made up of volunteers and members who give their precious time and keep going well past the point when they shouldn’t. I ask that they think about how they can extend that passion towards helping rebuild what has been raised to the ground by the extremes currently being experienced. I would encourage everyone to look at what they can do right now to make a little or a lot of difference to the communities in need. Below is a list of organisations that would gratefully accept your assistance: www.givit.org.au https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/about-us/fundraising (@nswrfs) https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/supporting-cfa https://www.redcross.org.au/get-invol/take-action/fundraise (@redcrossau) The Board looks forward to communicating more about what is to come this year of our 25th Anniversary but for now the focus is on restarting the year and rebuilding our drought and fire ravaged communities and environments.

23.01.2022 Three little words that can save a life. We don’t need to be experts, just a good friend or a good listener. #ruok #ruokday

21.01.2022 As we celebrate our 25th year anniversary, the team at NAWIC have taken the opportunity to assess all facets of our association, from our branding and offering, through to our membership structure. As some of you may know, the current membership structure has been under review since 2019, with the aim of making memberships more accessible, while also ensuring true value. We temporarily suspended membership fees whilst the industry navigated the effects of COVID to ensure that... we could retain connectivity amongst all of our members. In the meantime, research has been carried out by the membership team through meetings with an external consultant and one-on-one discussions with a cross section of current individual and corporate members. We are now very pleased to announce that the new-look membership offering will be rolled out from July 1. If you’d like to learn more about becoming a member please visit our website (link in bio). 19.01.2022 #Repost @nawic_act with @make_repost Do you remember what you wanted to do after school when you were in Year 10? Is the question posed by @hercanberra in their write up about the Women in Construction Pathways Program. The program is one of the toughest and yet rewarding things you will ever do. You can’t, you know, get your nails done. You can’t stress enough the importance of smashing the stereotype of women in the face, and being able to say ‘I did this, this is wha...t I did, and I am proud of myself’. It’s really exciting.- Joannah Currie Hit the link in our bio to read more Thanks again to our Education sub-committee, @australiantrainingcompany, Skills Canberra, and @kaneconstructions for being a NAWIC Silver Sponsor for this program, to all of the host employers and mostly to our participants. 16.01.2022 Have you read our latest blog post? With the NSW Government's lunch of 'Built for Women' Fee-Free training program, NAWIC now calls "on other states and Territories to allocate part of their infrastructure spend towards similar programs and start tipping the balance towards creating a more equitable industry where women fully participate", says NAWIC National Chair Kristine Scheul. "Whilst programs such as this are essential for attracting women into industries such as construction, it is equally important to ensure that those women feel supported and respected throughout their training. NAWIC is prepared to work with government and the industry to provide a network of ongoing support to the women who take up this program to ensure that they have the best chance possible to stay." It was a year later when the first National Women’s Day happened in the US - the rest is history!

11.01.2022 I think if we want our daughters to dream bigger than we did, then we have more work to do, she said. So many of us have gotten ourselves at the table, but we’re still too grateful to be at the table to really shake it up. And that’s not a criticism, because for so many just getting to the table was so hard. - Michelle Obama.

08.01.2022 The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and Tradeswomen Australia have congratulated the NSW Government on its launch of the 'Built for Women' Fee-Free training program. The two organisations backed the announcement of 3,000 training places for women in trades which will hopefully go some way towards addressing the significant under representation of women in the construction industry. NAWIC Chair Kristine Scheul said ...only 12% of workers in the construction industry are female with less than 2% of construction trade jobs being occupied by women, a significant under representation for half the population. "With more women entering the industry through programs such as this, the more likely there will be even more role models for future women looking for a career in construction." 05.01.2022 Today we remember The Hon. Susan Ryan AO (1942-2020). The first woman from the ALP to serve in cabinet, her memorable campaign slogan was ‘A Woman’s Place is in the Senate.’ However it was her work surrounding sex discrimination that became her most notable work. She was pivotal in passing landmark laws to protect women from workplace discrimination - Sex Discrimination Act, Equal Employment Opportunity Act and Affirmative Action Act. Because of her it is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of sex, marital status or pregnancy. After leaving politics she served as the Age Discrimination Commissioner from 211-2016 within the Australian Human Rights Commission.

05.01.2022 Earlier this month NAWIC partnered with @qutrealworld to host an interactive webinar series presented by a group of diverse @multiplexconstruction__au professionals. The webinar was based on discussing what goes into constructing a world-class precinct, and what roles young women can aspire to as part of as a project team. This was a great way for young women, particularly high school students, to consider a career in construction. It was also useful for students already stud...ying construction at university who want to network, or those who are having a bit of a break and re-considering out what they want to do. A recording of the webinar is available via the link in our bio. ___________________________________________________________ #nawic#nawicau#womeninconstruction#construction#australia#photooftheday#instadaily#queensland#victoria#newsouthwales#architecture#design#building#engineering

04.01.2022 Thank you so much to Women's Agenda for publishing this piece by our National Chair Kristine Scheul. "NAWIC calls on State and Territory governments in receipt of the infrastructure spend to quarantine a portion and direct it towards ensuring these are sufficient programs in place to support the small but growing number of women looking to work in this industry. Look at specifically focusing some of the training spend on introducing more women into the industry as NSW has done recently by funding 3000 training places for women in trades." https://lnkd.in//that-2020-cash-splash-on-construction-it/

04.01.2022 As an industry organisation that represents and advocates for women, the National Association of Women In Construction is pleased to see that there is a focus on women’s economic and personal security in this year’s budget. Some of the initiatives in regards to subsidising the cost of child care as well as providing improved access to women’s health care will help reduce some of the barriers facing women from participating fully in their chosen careers. With continuing focus ...on supporting the construction and infrastructure sectors, NAWIC believes the confluence of the budget focus should benefit women seeking to gain access to the industry as a viable career. We call on both government and industry to work together and with NAWIC to ensure that a clear pathway is created for women wanting to enter a career in construction and that their journey is supported. 03.01.2022 The benefits of female participation in the construction industry have long been researched and documented. A workplace that is diverse and inclusive (and reflective of society) can lead to higher employee engagement, an increased likelihood of retaining talent, improved company culture as well as economic and profitability benefits. There are also some recent reports highlighting how a female presence on construction sites can improve employee well-being. A recent articl...e published on ABC News highlights this issue and discusses how simply having women to talk to on sites is helping men address their mental health issues.
