23.01.2022 NBN Co expects to pick up broadband tab of 300,000 businesses Credit Ry Crozier Apr 22 2020 6:59AM IT news AU Reveals relief not capped at $50m.... NBN Co has revealed its internal modelling shows around 300,000 businesses are likely to be unable to pay their NBN bills in part or in full between now and October. The network builders chief customer officer for business Paul Tyler also told Ausbiz TVs The Pulse program that while $50 million of a $150 million relief package is allocated to business, this is an uncapped amount, meaning NBN Co wont need to draw a line in the number of businesses it can temporarily support. NBN Co unveiled a $150 million relief package late last week, promising fee relief for residential and small-to-medium business customers suffering financial hardship, as well as free temporary internet for unconnected, low-income families with school-aged children. The flagship of the business portion is the ability to waive half or all of a businesss NBN charges through to the end of September. Tyler revealed the potential scope and cost implications in an interview, published as an unlisted video on Monday this week. Theres no question that a lot of businesses are doing it really tough, and we want to play our part to support employment and productivity, Tyler said. We announced a $150m support package just last week, of which theres $50m that weve looked at allocating towards small and medium businesses, and we want to support them to stay connected during that period of time. We want them to be able to keep their phone numbers, keep their email addresses, continue to be able to trade even if its just at a much reduced level. Throughout that whole period of time, weve modelled that well probably be exposed to something like 300,000 businesses that would be either unable to pay their bills in full towards their retailers - and hence weve offered our support to those retailers - or at least partially unable to meet those payments. Its an uncapped amount actually - that $50m is our estimate. But we really want to support businesses through this period, but also to come out the other side in the best shape they can be. It wasnt immediately clear whether the residential support aspects of the relief package are similarly uncapped. There are some clear limits on how many unconnected, low-income households with school-aged children will be temporarily supported with free internet services through to September. NBN Co has expressed this as a $1 million cap per retail service provider; Superloop gave some indication of what this would mean when it capped its own participation at 5000 households.

21.01.2022 7-Eleven Australia deploys facial recognition on customer feedback tablets Says technology is 'not used for any other purpose'. 7-Eleven Australia is deploying ...facial recognition technology to all 700 stores nationwide as part of a customer feedback capture mechanism, but says the technology is not used for any other purpose. Customers of the Australian arm of the convenience chain have reported the appearance of vague signs being placed in the windows of stores over the past few weeks, both to iTnews and on Twitter. "Site is under constant video surveillance. By entering the store you consent to facial recognition cameras capturing and storing your image, the sign reads. A spokesperson for 7-Eleven Australia told iTnews that the technology is tied to a deployment of Rate It, a customer experience (CX) measurement tool that runs on a tablet device in-store. 7-Eleven uses different facial recognition technology in other markets such as Thailand, but this is not being used in Australia. The Australian spokesperson said that the use of facial recognition within the Rate It tablet is to ensure that the feedback is accurate and valid, and given customer feedback is so important to us we dont want the system being gamed. The technology is not used for any other purpose, the spokesperson said. If a customer doesnt use the feedback tablet, their image wont be recorded. The camera is only activated upon commencement of an interaction and is dormant at all other times. The data captured by the tablet is a 'biometric blurring' and only an encrypted algorithmic representation of the image is recorded. "This encrypted algorithmic representation is stored by Rate It for seven days for the validation to occur, after which they are permanently destroyed. 7-Eleven does not have access to this encrypted data. The 7-Eleven Australia spokesperson said the general warning at the store entry was worded conservatively on purpose. Just as with CCTV within our stores and throughout the retail sector, we alert customers to this fact prior to entering a store so they understand their image may be recorded once they enter the store, the spokesperson said. 7-Eleven said Rate It would replace a manual customer feedback form in-store. Responding to ever changing needs of the convenience customer is at the heart of 7-Elevens business. A key to achieving this is to get customer feedback fast, and being able to act on it fast, the spokesperson said. We are replacing the outdated practice of having people with a clipboard and pencil with a tablet so customers can give us immediate feedback on their experience in real time and allow us to act on our learnings swiftly at a store level.

20.01.2022 Google G-Suite services down for four hours worldwide Cause of the outage presently unknown. Google's G Suite productivity services suffered a four-hour worldwide outage on Thursday afternoon.... The problems began at about 3.30pm and initially impacted only Gmail and Google Drive. However, it soon became apparent that the problems were deeper than first thought, as other services including Docs, Slides, Sites, Groups, Chat, Meet, Keep and Voice progressively joined the casualty list. Google characterised the problem as Gmail sending issues, Meet recording issues, creating files issues in Drive, CSV user upload issues in Admin Console, posting message issues in Google Chat, Sites adding new pages issues, Keep issues, [and] voicemail issues. It did not say what the root cause was, but said at 7.40pm - some four hours after the outages started - that resolution was beginning to occur for some users. We expect a resolution for all users in the near future, it said, though it added the time frame was an estimate and may change.

18.01.2022 IoT botnet attacks: Past, present, and future In recent years, botnet attacks utilizing an army of compromised IoT devices have caused widespread disruption. In 2016, the Mirai botnet delivered a wave of cyberattacks across the US and Europe resulting in large-scale internet outages. For comparison sake, that particular attack leveraged more than 600,000 IoT devices. The energy market manipulation detailed in the Georgia Tech study would require 15% capacity of the Mirai botn...et, according to Shekari, putting such a scheme squarely in the realm of demonstrated possibility. Since the Black Hat presentation, a representative from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has contacted the research team about their findings. The employee was interested in collaborating with the researchers to better understand and detect potential market manipulations, according to Shekari. In 2018, FERC investigated numerous potential energy market manipulations cases, Shekari explained, and a number of these were closed without action due to lack of sufficient evidence. "If you see someone who can make 200% profits every year, that's something weird. So there are some players that [are] in the market that are making profits like that, but [the FERC] have no evidence to detect these kinds of things and to figure out what's going wrong in this market," Shekari said. "Maybe they have some better prediction algorithms, who knows. Maybe they are manipulating something."

06.01.2022 From IoT to AIoT: Digital transformation becomes smart automation By ANASOFT | www.anasoft.com The Internet helped usher in the fourth industrial revolution. Di...gital twins and AI are the latest emerging technologies pushing digital transformation to a whole new level at the cusp of the fifth industrial revolution. The exponential growth of new technologies is disrupting established forms and models across all industries. Although digital transformation permeates all areas, manufacturing (industry) and logistics (transport) belong to the forefront of early adopters when it comes to new (disruptive) technology, solutions and concepts. The Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins and artificial intelligence - the essentials from the inventory of Industry 4.0 have become instrumental in accelerated and pervasive innovations. These technologies maximize the productivity, quality and variability of products to an extent that conventional technology fails to achieve. Internet-driven industrial transformation The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the major enablers of the digital transformation which connects physical objects and non- physical entities through cyber-physical systems. Cyber-physical systems are the next generation of Smart Industry systems for intelligent manufacturing and logistics operations management. These systems consist of integrated computerised and physical elements that plan, manage and control company s processes regarding manufacturing, logistics, maintenance, quality control and supply chain in real time. Companies can dynamically and seamlessly react to external and internal factors and sudden market changes. Modern Smart Industry systems use the internet to connect machines, tools, personnel, transportation vehicles and data together in a sprawling network from shop floor to top floor. Manufacturing and transportation companies are spending to support production operations, management of production assets and material flow monitoring, which are the core functionalities of modern Smart Industry systems. Digital twins and the rising intelligence of industry A currently trending technology is digital twin that has already been integrated into Smart Industry systems. Digital Twin is a virtual representation of physical objects, processes, persons, data, systems and environments. The technology serves as a virtual model of real-life counterparts and a dynamic agent of data and state information acquired through a large number of sensors and actuators. Digital twin is implemented to monitor physical objects and non-physical entities and processes in real space and real time. The deployment of digital twin in complex simulation models accelerates and facilitates decision-making, as it renders the identification of potential outcomes much easier, while identifying crucial behavioural patterns in the chosen processes. Predictive analytics is one of its many possible utilizations. However, in cyber-physical systems, the digital twin s scope of functionality broadens extensively. The technology of digital twin enables a physical object to interact in a virtual and also a real-world environment thus creating an active digital twin or intelligent information agent. This form of digital twin is widely used in Smart Industry systems for dynamic planning, autonomous management and monitoring of manufacturing and logistics processes, or for flexibly managing selected segments of a supply chain. This kind of digital twin is already equipped with a certain degree of artificial intelligence (AI). From IoT transformation to AIoT revolution The internet revolutionized all aspects of business and industries with Internet of Things solutions deployed throughout enterprises and supply chains. After IoT, the next wave of extensive disruption will result from artificial intelligence (AI). The upsurge of computing capacity, the sheer volume of available data and the speed of its transfer, the ubiquity of the Internet of Things and cognitive technology (machine learning) are contributing to a paradigmatic shift. Digital twins combined with IoT and AI can transform regular objects, those that do not have an original predisposition to be smart, into intelligent things and usher in the dawning of the Artificial Intelligence of Things era (AIoT). Virtualization will transform manufacturing tools, machines, materials and products into fully fledged intelligent things that will require little or no human interference. The deployment of IoT, digital twin and AI has opened a new chapter of interconnected, digital and intelligent enterprises and supply chains. Smart Industry systems assure dynamic and autonomous process management of manufacturing and logistics, thoroughly levelling up the possibilities of automation. Digital transformation is progressively turning into smart automation, while the increasingly growing digital ecosystem of enterprises and factories is turning into a more tightly connected and organic structure. The very notion of automation is being challenged and revised in the fourth industrial revolution and the fifth revolution, ie AI, is imminent. Automation will evolve into the autonomization of processes. Find out more about Smart Industry trends at: trends.anasoft.com
05.01.2022 NBN Co records highest ever peak throughput of 13.8Tbps NBN Co has revealed that data flowing through its access network peaked at 13.8Tbps last Friday at 9.15pm AEDT, about 25 percent above levels a month ago. The company said it will now publish a weekly report as a way to publicly track demand for internet services over its network during the COVID-19 pandemic.... The first report shows the download peaks seen by NBN Co at three different times of the day. In all cases, those peaks are up between 21 percent and 30 percent in the space of a month. However, peak loads during business hours are still well below those seen in the evenings. While the peak throughput recorded in the daytime business hours has steadily climbed, it remains below the busy evening period when the peak data throughput on the main wholesale service is at its highest, NBN Co said in a statement. The increases in throughput in the busy evening period also remain well below the maximum capacity available on the NBN. NBN Co said it considered the peak throughput metric to be the most appropriate measure for growth in data flowing through the network, as it shows when usage is at its highest in each defined period. iTnews understands 13.8Tbps is the highest peak throughput the NBN has ever seen in its operating history. A table published separately shows the peak was hit on Friday March 27 at 9.15pm AEDT. NBN Co said it expected the majority of data usage to be mainly dominated by real-time video streaming, web browsing, social media and online gaming." The peaks coincided with updates to Call of Duty, which are understood to have contributed to the spikes in demand for services. However, since the last week of February, there have likely been large increases in the use of video conferencing and business applications as more people work and study from home, NBN also said. The detail around throughput also adds some context to a figure disclosed by Communications Minister Paul Fletcher earlier this week, in which he said that daytime traffic on the NBN [is] up around 70 percent. Since social distancing measures were implemented, traffic on the NBN main wholesale service has also significantly grown with business hours usage increasing by more than 70 percent, NBN Co confirmed. The new numbers will be published in the same place as NBN Co provides a monthly view of other network statistics.
05.01.2022 ASD hiring blitz breaks cover Grads au-go-go amid human boost to muscle. The Australian Signals Directorate is currently looking for graduates from a range of disciplines to be placed in analyst, technologist or corporate roles in 2021. Graduates will rotate through various mentored roles over a 12 month period, supporting both ASD and the Australian Cyber Security Centre missions. More than 70 graduates took up roles at ASDs Canberra headquarters last year through various entry-level programs, including in the Defence graduate program. ASD is offering individuals a starting salary of $68,442 plus superannuation, with a permanent APS level four job to be offered upon successful completion of the program. Director-general Rachel Noble said the graduate program, which will close in just under two weeks time, allowed ASD to secure future talent to protect Australias national security. In an increasingly connected and fast-changing world, ASD is looking for graduates to help us achieve the most complex and sometimes daunting challenges, she said. From disrupting offshore cyber criminals to supporting our military operations overseas, we are looking for people to defend Australia from global threats. We are seeking analysts with skills ranging from foreign language analysis to data interpretation, as well as tech-savvy recruits to help with software development, system design, infrastructure and cyber security roles. The program is also used to ensure ASDs workforce is composed of a diverse range of genders and backgrounds. We face a diversity of challenges; so a diversity of applicants of all genders and backgrounds is crucial to ASDs future success, Noble said. Noble became the first woman to be appointed to lead a core intelligence collection agency in Australia last December. She took up the post in February. According to its most recent annual report, ASDs workforce is largely male dominated, with only 33 percent of its 1877 ongoing employees women, as at the end of last financial year. ASDs had 1775 full-time equivalent staff at the end of 2018-19, up from 1587.5 in 2017-18

02.01.2022 Your smart TV, set-top box or smart refrigerator might lose most of its internet connections in the next year or two, a digital-security expert warns. 01.01.2022 Streampixs Just now YouTube begins streaming in AV1 on Android TV... YouTube has flipped the switch and now serves up videos in the new AV1 codec on compatible Android TV devices. The royalty-free video format is gaining traction. YouTube and AV1 Google, Netflix and others have committed to adopting the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media, founded by the same companies along with other industry heavyweights. Netflix began streaming in AV1 in February 2020 and now YouTube has flipped the switch for compatible Android TV devices through the latest software update. YouTube has been experimented with AV1 in PC browsers for some time. At this time, compatible Android TV devices include those the running on Broadcom's BCM72190/72180 and Realteks RTD1311/RTD1319 chipsets, according to XDA Developers who first spotted the change. We were not able to pull down AV1 video streams on our 2019 Nvidia Shield, which is hardly surprising as it does not have hardware support for AV1. At this time you are unlikely to see any major changes. However, in the long term AV1 support could bring 4K and HDR streaming to many more devices and streaming services following the slow roll-out of the royalty-based HEVC format as well as VP9, the two codecs currently being used for 4K HDR streaming. The royalty-free AV1 format is backed by Apple, Facebook, Netflix, LG, Microsoft, Netflix, Samsung and many others. LG and Samsung are also introducing the first TVs with AV1 support this year.
