24.01.2022 The latest State of the Climate is now available.

18.01.2022 On Friday, 8 June, NCCARF was pleased to host a symposium on "Climate challenges of today, opportunities for tomorrow" in Mackay. About 35 people, including representatives of the local council, NRM workers, academics, people from the sugar and ports industries, as well as interested community members, turned up to hear from eminent voices in the climate adaptation world. Sarah Boulter of NCCARF opened the evening with an overview of the organisation's work and the wide ran...ge of adaptation resources they have put together. Steve Turton, of Central Queensland University gave a broad outline of climate change impacts, trends and discussed the importance of taking action now, after which Rodger Tomlinson of the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management brought his expertise on coastal processes to the particular issues facing the Mackay/Whitsundays region and outlined some of the adaptation options that might be considered. Finally, Robyn Birkett with the Mackay Regional Council spoke about the adaptation measures the local council has taken to address vulnerability to severe storm events. The presentations were well received by the audience, though a number felt it would have appealed to a wider audience and offered to promote future events among local networks. A lively question and answer followed the presentations, with questions ranging from general climate queries, to inquiries about specific adaptation strategies for Mackay and ending with an articulate 15-year-old asking about the impacts of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef - a subtle reminder to the adult audience members that climate adaptation is imperative for the future of our children and future generations.

07.01.2022 NCCARF held an evening symposium in Kingston, Tasmania on the topic of Climate change adaptation for a secure future: people and places. More than 50 people attended to hear Jon Barnett from the University of Melbourne, Barry Brook from the University of Tasmania, Caitlin Vertigan from the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority and Jon Doole from the Climate Change Innovation Lab share their thoughts on adaptation in Tasmania. The presentations were well received by g...uests, which included one mayor, one Tasmanian MP, local and state government officers, researchers at CSIRO and the University of Tasmania, as well as consultants, environmental activists and interested community members. The question and answer session following the talks was lively, with an emphasis on barriers to adaptation and discussion around how these barriers can be overcome to achieve adaptation action. Jon Doole, whose organisation hosted the event, was very pleased with the turnout and as a result, plans to organise a similar community forum towards the end of the year. See more

05.01.2022 The Queensland Government is working to develop a stakeholder-driven climate adaptation plan for Queensland’s biodiversity and ecosystems. The plan will consider the climate change risks, challenges and opportunities facing Queensland’s natural terrestrial, freshwater and marine systems. Development of the plan will include: reviewing existing work and identifying gaps... identifying barriers and opportunities considering innovative, sustainable funding mechanisms for future actions, including in relation to relevant cross-sectoral linkages identifying and prioritising feasible next steps to progress the climate-risk management of Queensland’s natural systems. The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility and Cath Moran Ecological Consultancy are working with the government to develop the plan. A discussion paper and survey are available for comment on the NCCARF website until Friday 15 June 2018. Visit https://lnkd.in/gxqXYyt For further information about the plan, contact Dr Sarah Boulter at [email protected] or Dr Cath Moran at [email protected].
