24.01.2022 Apart from the lower cost, another big advantage of a timber veneer door over solid timber (which we can also supply) is being able to choose from rainforest or other exotic timbers from across the globe. NC Doors’ manufacturing process creates a tough, ready-to-install door that makes a stunning opening statement. And, there’s a virtual forest of choices available from our supplier. If you prefer a paint finish, NC Doors also offer paint-quality plywood, MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard), Redicote hardboard, or Duracote tempered hardboard. 23.01.2022 We love getting positive feedback from happy customers. Colleen Sydenham ordered a custom-made screen door in keeping with the Heritage style of her Kew home and she was delighted with the result. I had a timber screen door designed and manufactured by NC Doors and wanted to tell you how happy I was with the whole experience, Colleen wrote after company director David Drewitt installed the door last week. I am so impressed with both the look and the quality of my new front screen door that I will certainly recommend NC Doors in the future. Thank you so much.

22.01.2022 Fine start, Matt finish Bonny Hills local Matt Andrews is keen to learn more about NC Doors’ computer-assisted door design and manufacturing processes. In the first week of his month-long trial, the 23-year-old carpenter has been introduced to two pieces of high-tech equipment. The first was a CAD door frame profiling system, which creates a 3D drawing of the door, including the exact positioning of all its hardware; the second was the 5-axis CNC routing machine behind him, w...hich precisely sizes and shapes each door and removes those cut-outs, so the door is ready for rapid installation. But, happy to lend a hand where needed, Matt also picked up a ‘low-tech’ sander a tool the young chippy is already very familiar with. He enjoyed his first week: I’ve never seen this kind of gear before getting the chance to use it has been very cool. See more

22.01.2022 Matt rises to new challenges at NC Doors Matt Andrews has swapped his carpentry tools for a digital ‘tool bag’ comprising a Prodim CAD profiling machine, a CNC timber door router, and a computer. The career shift came about last year when Matt heard about NC Doors’ trailblazing digital door technology and how we’ve slashed the time and cost of buying and installing a custom-made timber commercial or residential door. The 24-year-old chippie approached NC Doors’ General Manage...r Barry Drewitt for a job. Learning that Matt was more than a little tech-savvy, Barry placed him with each of the company’s four divisions design, programming, manufacturing, and installation over the following months. After a stint working with the installers, Matt learned to use the CAD profiling equipment, lent a hand producing doors on the CNC router, and finally gained experience creating the computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM) programs that drive the router. It was the perfect grounding for his current role as a trainee project manager. It’s been very different to being on the tools, Matt said. I’m still in construction, but now I’m using my brain more than my hands. I enjoy overseeing projects from start to finish, especially the bigger ones, from being part of the discussions with the client to co-ordinating the job from design to production and through to delivery of the doors. Seeing 150 doors come off the CNC router perfectly sized and shaped and all the hardware cut-outs removed is awesome. It can take a carpenter hours to get a door ready to hang, but the router can do that work in around 6 minutes. Our doors a perfect fit for Double Bay Matt saw the value of door frame profiling firsthand as part of our crew hanging 3m-high Blackbutt veneered entry doors at a four-storey apartment building in Sydney’s Double Bay. The doors were too big for the stairwell or lift and had to be lifted individually floor by floor by crane to the balcony of each apartment. It would have been too costly to get the crane back to lower a door back down if it wasn’t right, he said. So, every door had to fit perfectly the first time - and they did. It was a job that couldn’t have been done without profiled doors that were ready to be installed. While Matt is mastering the technical challenges of his role, he admits his customer relations skills are a work in progress. I am trying to sound more professional when I deal with people, Matt said. It’s not easy to get the right tone especially in an email but I’m working on it. That’s why I prefer calling a customer if I need information or to give them an update on their doors. To relax outside work, Matt plays video games, both solo and with friends. His favourite? ‘Counter Strike’.

21.01.2022 NC Doors is making home modification quicker and easier People living with a physical disability, adjusting to life after serious accidents, or simply getting older often need modifications made to their homes. NC Doors has been supplying custom-made oversized hinged doors and cavity sliders to regional and metro builders who install them to make accessing all areas of a home easier. Morris Saba, pictured left with NC Doors general manager Barry Drewitt, is the owner of Saba Building, a Sydney-based building company that specialises in building renovations particularly home modifications for NDIS clients living with disability. This is a great way to get doors all the hard work’s done, he said. The workmanship and quality are very good, and NC Doors’ service has been great.

20.01.2022 NC Doors’ technology clinches data centre contract NC Doors’ unique ability to manufacture custom-made timber doors precisely sized and shaped, and with all hardware cut-outs, grills and vision panels removed on a five-axis CNC routing machine, delivers huge savings for all our clients. But being able to pre-fit the hardware in our factory proved critical for construction company Morgan Civil when they pitched for the contract to upgrade a high-security data centre. The contr...act was relatively straight-forward: enclose the high-voltage electrical switchboards supplying the servers in room-sized cabinets to seal them from smoke, fire, dust or other debris. The real challenge was not being able to build them on the premises. It wasn’t possible to grind steel or weld on-site nothing that could generate a spark or dust was permitted anywhere near the equipment, MCC Director, Tycho Leathbridge said. We couldn’t even have our phones turned on. Because we had to pre-assemble everything off-site, it was a huge bonus to have the hinges, mortice locks and seals pre-fitted and ready to go straight into the steel frames. I’ll admit that we were nervous about the first door and frame combination we triple checked them. But, they were a perfect fit so we didn’t bother checking the rest and they all went in like a charm. Doors’ perfect fit meant rapid installation Along with eight pairs of 2.4m-high solid core timber doors, NC Doors supplied eight double-door steel frames, which Morgan Cavil’s project team painted and installed in the prefabricated walls. The five-man team then installed the walls, complete with frames and doors to enclose the switchboards in two 12-hour shifts. We were able to achieve that rapid installation largely because the door and frame sets went together perfectly, Mr Leathbridge said. The truth is that even with the best carpenters onsite, door mortices made by hand are rarely perfect. Even with good jigs and templates, it’s easy for a trimmer to slip Most of Morgan Civil’s work involves high-end residential properties. And, when you’re delivering multi-million dollar homes, having beautifully balanced doors with perfectly matched and morticed hinges and locks is critical to the overall finish. Happy client awards second contract The doors were built and finished to the client’s exacting requirements on the back of NC Doors’ 30 years of installation experience and 20 years of CAD-driven manufacturing knowledge. NC Doors general manager, Barry Drewitt said the project designers resisted the temptation to ‘over design’ the door hardware, which included Vinco reverse barrel bolts routed both top and bottom, and Lorient AAS 7506 Astragal smoke seal, and Lorient threshold plates. Data centres are high security areas, but the cabinetry and door systems were perfect for

18.01.2022 Getting fully finished doors ready to hang solved a lot of problems for us, Craig Maher said. Craig and wife Nichole had decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and refurbish their 70s-built holiday house in Chepana Street in Lake Cathie. First up was replacing the property’s original 17 doors. Because we live in the NSW Southern Highlands, we couldn’t be there to co-ordinate multiple tradesmen, Craig said. First a carpenter would have to come and measure, then come back to prepar...e them for hanging, and then screw them on. Then, the painter would have to make three visits before the rest of the hardware went on. Co-ordinating that from 500km away would have been a nightmare. Getting all the doors delivered already sized and professionally painted, then installed in less than day was a godsend. CAD profiling the beachside holiday house’s original door frames presented challenges. OId door frames often warp over time, but our proprietary CAD-based door technology allows NC Doors to incorporate any variations in the manufacturing program we create. Essentially, each door is unique: sized and shaped, with its hardware cut outs removed as it passes through our CNC routing machine. The fit is perfect every time. For the internal doors, Craig and Nichole chose NC Doors energy-efficient doors with a lightweight core (keeps warm air in during winter, hot air out in summer). Our painter finished them with two undercoats and a topcoat of Lexicon White in our factory’s painting bay. They looked striking against stained timber door jambs. NC Doors’ general manager Barry Drewitt described NC Doors’ technology as ‘a game changer’ for commercial and residential builders, and home renovators especially for people like the Mahers who live outside the area. A job like that could never be done in one day using the traditional methods when you have to co-ordinate a team of tradesmen. Our technology is quick and clean the doors fit perfectly first time and there’s no rubbish to remove or dust to clean up afterwards. Like to know more? Call us on 6585 3332 to request a quote. 16.01.2022 We love our new barn door A stylish, custom-made barn door with sound-reducing acoustic values was the perfect choice for the media room at Paul and Gail Mullins’ Port Macquarie home. We needed a door that would dampen the sound of music or movies, Paul said. As well as the very wide 1.3 metre opening, there was no space for a normal hinged door to open inward or outward. An acoustic barn door was really our only option. Gail added: Being able to pick a stylish design fo...r the face made the door even more special. We looked at off-the-shelf traditional barn doors, but they were too small and the cross beams made them look too ‘country’ for a newish house. Being local, NC Doors’ custom-made solution was ideal and their workmanship is awesome, too we’re really happy with it. Sliding barn doors are very popular right now, NC Doors’ General Manager Barry Drewitt said. They combine style and functionality, while freeing up floor space that would otherwise be needed for a conventional door. Although most barn doors are generally one sliding door on a track above the doorway, another option is a double door configuration that allows the doors to slide to either side of your opening. Like to discuss a barn door for your new home or renovation? How about a custom-made cavity sliding door, cost-cutting energy-efficient doors, or a decorative entry door. 16.01.2022 Growing up, Port teen Maddy just wanted to be a tradie. She found her niche as a painter and decorator with Bennison Contractors. She loves coming to work even the satisfying ritual of washing paint off at the end of each day. She was on the job painting a custom-made residential entry door with multiple visions panels at NC Doors’ Wauchope factory last week. After the final coat has dried sufficiently, we’ll pre-fit the hinges, locks and other pieces of hardware to the door, which is quick and easy because all the hardware cut-outs are removed during the production process, before delivering it to its new owner. In about 20 minutes, the old door will come off and the new one on ready to make a stunning opening statement, thanks to Maddy and the NC Doors team.

15.01.2022 Bonny Hills local Ronan Bailey had a busy first day at NC Doors learning the ropes from lead installer Ian Drewitt, who guided him through the process of adding the hardware to eight pairs of over-sized paired doors that we designed and made for Sydney-based Morgan Civil Engineering. With 19-year-old Ronan’s help, Ian pre-fitted the bulk of the hardware hinges, locks, drop seals, and latches in the factory after the cut-outs were removed on our CNC routing machine. The result was perfectly fitting doors and a big saving in pre-installation costs.

13.01.2022 Rust quickly took hold in this fire door’s steel frame when water seeped into it through the concrete floor above in a Coffs Harbour shopping centre parking station. Beyond repair, both the frame and the timber fire door had to be replaced. Once NC Doors’ installation team of Mick Wittman (pictured) and Ian Drewitt cut out the old frame, sealed the leaky concrete and installed the new steel frame, the job was almost done. That’s because all the usual pre-installation carpentr...y that must be done before a door can be hung removing the hinge panels, the lock, handles and self-closer cut outs had already been completed on the computer-driven routing machine in our Wauchope factory. We also painted the door, so it only had to be unwrapped, have the hardware added and be screwed onto its frame. Instead of an entire day, the job was wrapped up by lunchtime (in time for the boys to hit the food court!) Besides our speed and efficiency in manufacturing and installing high-quality doors, another reason clients love NC Doors’ service is that when we CAD profile a door that needs replacing, we get their approval to profile all of the other timber doors while we’re on-site. That way, if one of them is damaged in the future we can quickly call up the CAD drawings and produce a replacement door. See more

13.01.2022 We’re just wild about Harry Only very rarely does a new employee transform a business. And, when it happens it’s usually an experienced older person that brings in fresh ideas. But Harris ‘Harry’ Butler was just 20 when he joined NC Doors as an apprentice carpenter. Five years on and almost through his apprenticeship, Harris concedes he’ll probably never be a conventional ‘chippie’. Taking NC Doors’ computer-based custom door design and manufacturing processes to new heights ...is way more exciting! The computer-assisted designing and manufacturing of custom-made timber doors that Barry (Drewitt, General Manager) wanted to implement was very new to Australia still is, Harris said. We received some brief training when the Prodim profiling equipment and CNC routing machine arrived, but I had no background in 3D or CAD imaging and there were no courses I could do. I’ve largely taught myself from the manuals that came with the machines, and what I could find on YouTube. The door design and production systems Harris has helped pioneer at NC Doors eliminate hours of costly carpentry normally required before a door can be installed. After a door frame is CAD measured or ‘profiled’, the data is used to generate a 3D drawing of the new door, with hinge panels, lock type, handles and any other hardware precisely positioned. The drawing is used to create a computer-assisted manufacturing program which when downloaded into a big flat-bed router, shapes and sizes the oversized door panel, while also removing all the hardware cut-outs. On average each new door is produced in around six minutes. The machine even drills the hinge screw holes, so our doors can arrive either ‘hardware ready’ or pre-fitted with hardware and painted or stained for greater convenience. When Harris is not developing new programs to integrate ever-more sophisticated hardware into NC Doors’ range of commercial and residential timber doors, he is developing a new production and inventory tracking system for the factory. Oh, and he’s training three other young guns to assist him in different areas of his multi-faceted role, too. In his spare time (what there is of it) he is renovating a house he and his partner Danika bought last year in Wauchope. A snow hound, Harris enjoys snowboarding each winter, a sport that came naturally given he was ranked third in Australia in trampolining as a 12-year-old Gymnastics is also a weekly pastime. A huge digital learning curve Harris described mastering NC Doors’ unique digital technology as a huge learning curve. It was important that one person be across every aspect of the CAD design and manufacturing process as we developed it over the last 18 months, but juggling roles has been the biggest challenge, he said. But now I’m training Ronan (Bailey) and Aaron (Cace-Gully) to operate the CNC machine, and teaching Matt (Andrews) the software side of things so I can concentrate setting up the new systems for the factory.

12.01.2022 Carpentry and joinery traditionally have been a male-dominated trades, but that’s slowly changing. NC Doors is delighted to again be participating in Newman College’s Work Experience program this year, hosting Year 11 student Rachel Byrne, who’s learning about modern door-making technology at our Wauchope factory/showroom. The 17-year-old Comboyne teen is learning all the basics of the trade, such as how to safely use power tools like this drop saw under the guidance of exper...ienced joiner, Mike Wittman. So, can she picture herself as a ‘chippie’? Rachel isn’t quite sure yet, but she says she’s ‘having fun’ as the youngest member of our team. As a local company committed to training and employing local people, NC Doors values the Work Experience program. In fact, our lead estimator Jake Irby (pictured) is Newman College alumni who came to us via the program. See more

11.01.2022 NC Doors’ computerised door technology turned what would have been a three-day project using traditional joinery methods into a one-day job at Westport Public School last week just in time for the start of the new school year this week. Contracted to replace the Port Macquarie school’s old aluminium exit doors with solid core timber doors, we built the timber frames and custom-manufactured the doors to fit them in our Wauchope factory removing the hardware cut-outs for th...e hinges, locks, handles and vision panels in the process. Then we painted the frames and doors and factory-fitted the hardware and glass. For NC Doors’ installation team Ian, Dave and Mick fixing the frames and hanging the finished doors was a quick and easy job just how the boys like ‘em! If you are building or renovating, get your new doors the fast, convenient, mess-free way. Call NC Doors on 6585 3332 today for a chat. See more

10.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day from all the Staff at NC Doors

07.01.2022 Preparing quotations for a manufacturing company like NC Doors can be mind-bogglingly complex. When hundreds of doors are involved, miss a critical item and our estimator could either lose us the job or our profit margin ouch! Clearly, it’s a role for someone with a meticulous mind and a keen eye for detail. Someone like Jake Irby, who first came to us as a shy school student on work experience. Today, aged just 22, the young man from King Creek, near Wauchope, is our lea...d estimator. Jake relishes the task of pulling together and laying out the myriad of information required to compile a quote, sometimes over several days. Estimating just came naturally to me from the very start, Jake said. I love the challenge of presenting complex quotes clearly so the client can quickly see what’s been included or, just as importantly, excluded. We make a huge variety of commercial and residential doors and they can involve many different materials and cores, while door surfaces can range from timber veneers to metal. Freight, travel and accommodation costs for our installation team also have to be factored, and more and more of our customers get us to paint or stain their doors and pre-fit locks, handles, hinges and other hardware items in the factory. In his spare time, Jake’s a competition-standard gamer. His favourite video game is League of Legends, which is appropriate because he’s become a bit of a legend in the NC Doors’ office, too. 07.01.2022 NC Doors’ joiner, Barry Harris turns raw timber into eye-catching works of door art. Pictured sitting in its timber frame, this big, beautiful entry door is destined to grace a home in Port Macquarie after it’s stained in our painting bay to enhance the Pacific Maple’s grain. As well as removing all the door hardware cut-outs (which makes installing our doors fast and easy), NC Doors’ CNC routing machine can etch or cut out geometric shapes into the raw door panels we fabricate by hand. Typically, these are circles or rectangles for vision panels, but occasionally we’re asked to step outside the square, so to speak, to create a door that’s certain to have great kerb appeal.

07.01.2022 At work or on weekends, mates Ronan Bailey and Aaron Cace-Gully are a double act. In NC Doors’ factory/showroom in Wauchope, 19-year-old Ronan, of Bonny Hills, and 18-year-old Aaron, of Upper Landsdowne, together operate NC Doors’ CNC routing machine. First, they place a hand-fabricated door panel on the machine’s ‘table’, which then sizes and shapes ii and removes all the hardware cut-outs. The process takes minutes rather than the hours it takes the traditional manual way. ...With all the tedious carpentry work done, the door can then be hung quickly and easily and there’s no mess to clean up! For greater convenience, NC Doors can also pre-fit the hardware and paint or stain the doors in our painting bay. On weekends the newest ‘Faces of NC Doors’ are part of a different ‘act’ as members of Bonny Hills-based band Nana Klumpp. With Ronan on drums and Aaron on guitar, the four-piece band plays gigs at venues across the Mid-North Coast. Never without a smile on his face, Ronan enjoys working with his head and his hands. Our doors are designed from CAD drawings and the router is computer driven, Ronan said. But it needs technicians to drive it and Aaron and I are responsible for making sure that the doors that come off the machine are perfect every time. When he not knocking out doors or drumbeats, you’ll find Ronan in the surf or hanging out with his mates at ‘Bonnies’. A more recent arrival at NC Doors, Aaron is Ronan’s ‘support act’. He admits harnessing the CNC router’s technology has involved a steep learning curve. We make a huge range of commercial and residential doors, so there’s a lot to learn, Aaron said. But, I often get the chance to help out other work teams in the factory, so every day I’m working with people who are happy to teach me what they know. That’s pretty awesome. See more

06.01.2022 When they decided to update their home of 45 years, King Creek residents Bob and Lyn Ross opted for new doors throughout starting with an eye-catching entry door. We thought replacing the original doors would give the house a fresh, modern look, said Lyn. The couple called NC Doors to replace all their internal doors, and to get our advice on how best to design a stunning custom-made entry door. Computer-assisted profiling of the frames enabled us to produce hardware-read...y doors sized and shaped for each door frame in the Ross’ house. Then we went a step further, adding the hardware and painting the doors, making it a simple job for our installers to take out with the old doors and install the new. We also replaced and painted the jamb for the entry door, to which we added panels featuring dark tinted glass from Port’s Pavy Glass and pre-fitted Zanda hardware. Lynn’s is ecstatic about her new doors: Love them. See more

05.01.2022 We christened it our Back to the Future door because to us it epitomises 1960’s retro design. (Can’t you see Marty and Doc pulling up out front in the DeLorean?) It was designed for a Port Macquarie home, but we loved it so much we produced a second as a keepsake. It always catches the eye of customers who come across it in our showroom. Seriously, cutting out the circles for the glass panels would be a very time-consuming (and costly) job for a carpenter. But it’s a breeze for our CNC timber routing machine, which can whip them out in minutes as well as remove the hinge panels, lockset and any other hardware cut-outs. With all that hard work done, our doors can be hung in minutes, too. It’s the Back to the Future of residential and commercial door design and manufacture. Any type, any size easy!

05.01.2022 Designing and manufacturing metal-clad timber doors for the ANSTO nuclear medical science complex in Sydney brought out the best in NC Doors’ entire team. Here’s how we accomplished the project Our CAD designer Harris ‘Harry’ Butler visited the site of what is the world’s newest nuclear medicine facility to capture the exact dimensions of the door frames. Pictured top left collaborating with our CNC technician Jackson Sauer, Harry developed the production programs required t...o size, shape and rout each of the door panels, which our fabricating team built by hand. NC Doors computer-assisted profiling and production process removes the hinge rebate panels and lockset cut-outs, so the hardware can be pre-fitted in our factory and arrive onsite ready to be installed in hours (not the days it can take when this pre-installation work has to be done by a carpenter onsite). NC Doors’ most experienced installers, company Director Ian Drewitt and Sean Cummins (pictured bottom left) finished the doors in our factory, adding the Colorbond metal cladding to the faces and edges of those pictured below, along with much of the hardware. Several of the doors incorporated fire-rated Pyropanel cores, others had acoustic-rated centres, while the security doors featured high-strength block cores, in 40-50mm thicknesses. A pair of galvanised steel-sheeted solid core doors featured vision panels with aluminium surrounds. We were working with non-standard sizes and a variety of materials, while the hardware was anything but commonplace, NC Doors’ General Manager and Director, Barry Drewitt said. But, NC Doors’ CAD design and manufacturing technology can easily handle complex doors like these. See more

04.01.2022 We got David and Charlotte’s vote on doors Local Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie and wife Charlotte dropped into NC Doors on Monday to consult our resident door guru, general manager Barry Drewitt. The couple are renovating their home at Sancrox, blending the original residence with a large new addition, and were sent by their builder to get Barry’s advice on door systems and hardware options. The MP was delighted to support a local business and, of course, we took... the opportunity to tell him more about our innovative CAD-based system for designing and manufacturing custom-made, ready-to-install timber doors. Leaving armed with lots of ideas and brochures, David found a day of domestic decision-making during a break in Federal Parliament almost as challenging as national politics. The one big difference? He got to ditch his suit and tie for the day. See more

04.01.2022 Fitting a seal to the bottom of a fire door is essential to trap potentially toxic smoke and cut off the oxygen that would accelerate the fire. Seals are also used to dampen sound in some of our acoustic door systems. They might look simple, but door seals are deceptively high-tech. When the door is closed, a protruding button strikes the door frame and the spring-loaded seal drops into a track below, retracting when the door opens. By sizing and shaping each door and removing the hardware cut-outs seals, hinges, lock, handles etc during the manufacturing process, NC Doors has made installing doors quick and easy. In fact, you don't need to be a pro like Mick Wittman, seen here wielding his trusty electric drill to fix the seal into position and fit all the other hardware in around 15 minutes.

02.01.2022 FACEBOOK Trent Walsh When Port Macquarie architect Trent Walsh decided to replace his home’s dated colonial style entry door, he briefed NC Doors to deliver a new door in a modern design, fully painted and fitted with Trent’s choice of lockset and stylish decorative pull handle. The finished door was hung in no time we even took the old door away. You’ll agree the new door has transformed the entrance to the Pappinbarra Parade home, giving it great street appeal.

02.01.2022 NC Doors recently supplied and installed 15 ‘hardware-ready’ doors and timber frames in Block 13 at Macksville Primary School. Our computer-assisted technology means we can size and shape the doors and remove their hardware cut-outs during manufacture, allowing each to be screwed onto its respective frame in minutes and eliminating the usual costly pre-installation carpentry. We also pre-assembled the frames in our factory, making the whole installation even quicker! The make...over was another collaboration with Taree builder Shane Reeman, of Reeman Constructions, who loves the time- and cost-saving convenience of getting doors that arrive on site ready to hang. Block 13 has a fascinating history. Dating back to the 1880s, the building was originally part of the original Macksville Hospital and was later a library. Now it’s being given its new lease of life as classrooms for local littlies. We’ll be back in Macksville later this month this time at the town’s high school. We’re also looking forward to working with Shane and his team on the upcoming refurb of Taree’s Manning Entertainment Centre. See more
