24.01.2022 My amazing colleague/next door (office) neighbour Shona has created this Coronavirus book that would be great for primary school aged children.

24.01.2022 Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums, including those who fulfill the ‘mum’ role for others.

23.01.2022 This looks like a good webinar. Avaialble free until Sunday.

23.01.2022 A great little video explaining anxiety to kids (and adults).

22.01.2022 It can be uncomfortable to talk about kids who want to die, but it’s common and it’s important to handle appropriately. While this article is good, you should always reach out to a professional (which can include your GP or school guidance counsel or) for specific advice about your child. https://www.nytimes.com//suicidal-ideation-young-children.

19.01.2022 Today is R U OK day. It’s been a really tough year for almost everyone. Whilst we should be endeavouring to care for ourselves and others everyday, it just doesn’t always happen. R U OK day is an opportunity to intentionally check on those around you, but also take stock of how you’re caring for yourself. When was the last time you thought about your own self care? Took time to do something that you enjoy? Took a step towards one of those goals that has seemed so far off? You can use the following steps for yourself or a friend.

19.01.2022 I have spoken to a few families about using a different kind of Advent calendar this year. We know from research and personal experience that helping others benefits our own mental health. A Gratitude Advent calendar lists an activity that you can do each day to encourage thankfulness, reflect on the things that you have in your life, and to care for others. There are many printable examples online, however here are some instructions on making your own. https://nourishingjoy.com/service-projects-for-kids-advent/

19.01.2022 This is such a good message as we move into the busy part of term 3.

19.01.2022 Thank you to all of the teachers who put this into practice each day with their students.

18.01.2022 Remember folks, these things count.

17.01.2022 If you’re preparing to have your children at home for the next 5 weeks, and are unsure how to manage, this podcast might be helpful. Remember though, this is unprecedented for everyone. You cannot expect to be parent, worker and teacher all at the same time and do this flawlessly. Give yourself and your children (and their paid teachers) some grace.

15.01.2022 Sam is running his ever-popular seminar again this Wednesday night. This is a great way to better understand why your kids might be behaving the way they do, and what you can do about it.

15.01.2022 Great news! The government has just announced an extension of Medicare rebates for telehealth consultations. This means that you can continue to receive Medicare rebates for psychology sessions provided over the phone or via videoconferencing. This is a great option for people who like to reduce travel time, or when you are unwell and are not able to leave the house.

15.01.2022 As per public health advice, we are asking that anyone coming into the clinic wears a mask. Please only bring one parent/carer, and no additional children if possible. If you would prefer a telehealth consultation, please let us know.

14.01.2022 Our neighbours across the ocean are winning in many areas at the moment. Their latest series of ads to assist children in better understanding the dangers of the online world are certainly thought provoking. Here is one of them. https://youtu.be/94mINLDSWlk

14.01.2022 This is really good. Be the thermostat not the thermometer.

13.01.2022 If you’ve been wanting to improve your child’s confidence in riding a bike, this might be a great opportunity.

12.01.2022 Thriving Families are running an online Circle of Security Program!

11.01.2022 We are encouraging people to use telehealth for appointments if they can, to reduce travel in the community and interactions with others. It is probably easier than you think!

11.01.2022 Shona Innes Psychology has written a sequel to her coronavirus book, and it is available here. Its a great tool to explain the changes that have occurred in the past few days. https://shonainnespsychology.com.au//Lets-talk-some-more-a

09.01.2022 There's a great deal of panic and misinformation going around at the moment in relation to the current coronavirus, COVID-19. At the clinic, we are following the advice of Queensland Health, as well as maintaining good hygiene practices. At the moment it is 'business as usual'. If you or your child are unwell, particularly with a fever, please do not attend the clinic. If you are planning to self-isolate for any reason, you are welcome to contact the clinic to discuss alternative options for therapy. In many cases you may be able to continue with your consultations at home, via telehealth. Please just email the clinic to receive more information. Kids Helpline have provided some useful information to deal with our current circumstances.

08.01.2022 Karen Young has written some great books for kids about anxiety, and is now offering a Facebook live session for teachers! https://www.facebook.com/events/582663016000394/

08.01.2022 Psychologists are an innovative bunch. Kirrilee from Calm Kids Central has made this little video for kids about COVID-19. https://www.calmkidcentral.com/covid-19/

07.01.2022 For those that feel a little alone. https://www.thisiscolossal.com//nobody-is-normal-animati/

07.01.2022 Lots of people need this today. Look after yourselves and your neighbours.

05.01.2022 A timely reminder that if you are sick, you must get tested and then stay at home. Otherwise the impact is far-reaching for others. As much as I love seeing you all, I don’t need to see you if you are at all unwell (sore throat, runny nose, cough etc). Telehealth options are still available. Take care and stay safe.

04.01.2022 I’m not big on rewards charts, but maybe this might be helpful for the school holidays .

04.01.2022 This is a great summary of how to explain consent to kids.

04.01.2022 Tony Attwood is coming back to the coast! He is always entertaining and informative.

03.01.2022 This is a lovely little video to explain to kids what they can do amidst the chaos. https://youtu.be/DA_SsZFYw0w

02.01.2022 This is really important. It’s tough to keep calm when there’s chaos around you, but as parents it is really important that you can model how to calm yourself down.

02.01.2022 Beyond the Autism Spectrum is a documentary currently available on 7plus. While it may be confronting for some, I think that it gives a great insight into the complexities of supporting a child with complexities. Ultimately it is very much a story of learning to connect with a child in whatever way works for them, regardless of the challenges. https://beyondthespectrummovie.com/

02.01.2022 Mindheart.co have developed a child-friendly workbook to help kids understand the coronavirus. You can download a copy at the link below. https://660919d3-b85b-43c3-a3ad-3de6a9d37099.filesusr.com/
