24.01.2022 New research exploring the motivations, challenges and strengths of student carers at university has just been released. The report conducted by La Trobe Univer...sity, in collaboration with Carers Victoria, and funded by the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education at Curtin University, highlighted the fact that carers often embody many of the qualities sought by universities including time management, empathy, compassion and patience; and expertise relevant to specific areas of study, such as nursing and disability awareness. Despite carers having many strengths, juggling caring and study produced considerable time pressure, financial hardship, and lower levels of wellbeing compared with their non-caring peers. Key findings from the report include: A quarter of student carers never disclosed their carer status to anyone at university. This shows the importance of increasing awareness and understanding of carers within the university community. As a result of COVID-19, caring responsibilities increased, mental health was negatively affected, and student carers found it more difficult to do well at university. There are clear grounds to establish student carers as a priority group within Australian higher education Universities could develop consistent means of identifying carers at application or enrolment. Increased carer-specific support would also be helpful, such as the establishment of peer groups. Further advocacy is required to expand financial support. Universities could develop more inclusive campus climates, in which the strengths of carers can be recognised and harnessed.
