25.01.2022 Operations Manager of National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare (NCVH) Kirsty Chapman and specialist case worker Johanna Castle both attended the revamped Harbord Diggers club on Tuesday as part of Veterans' Health Week. A fabulous and engaging guest panel spoke about transitioning and life beyond the ADF. Blair Hickey, James Griffin, Adrian Talbot, Gwen Cherne and Garth Callender later joined Kirsty to discuss the operating model of care of NCVH and the progress of the pilot... program for returned veterans at Concord Hospital. The events continue throughout this week around the campus for the Hospital known and recognised for its longstanding links with the veteran community. For more information on the program visit: https://www.slhd.nsw.gov.au/concord/ncvh/

25.01.2022 Following the loss of her beloved husband, Gwen Cherne became a leading advocate for the increased role of families and carers in the treatment and recovery of veterans. Sergeant Peter Jon Café of Second Commando Regiment took his own life in February 2017 following a decades-long career that saw him deployed to war zones in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. Since Peters devastating suicide, Gwen has channelled her grief into advocating for the rights of veterans families a...nd carers. How can we make sure were supporting the veteran if were not including the family? Gwen said. Now a member-director of the War Widows' Guild of Australia NSW, Gwen is determined to inform other families of their rights and entitlements during a service members deployment, as well as post-deployment, a particularly difficult time for many veterans. Gwen said by including families in the care planning and treatment, the Centre, located at Concord Hospital, will fill an important gap in the treatment and recovery of veterans. Its absolutely wonderful that were starting to recognise that the family must be included. To find out more see www.ncvhconcord.com.au

25.01.2022 The National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare (NCVH) understands the important support role that families and carers play in the treatment and recovery of veterans. Fussell House is expected to open in 2020, and is named after 25-year-old Lieutenant Michael Fussell, who was killed in action while serving with the Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan. The hostel will be a safe space for veterans to stay together, and will offer family accommodation and facilities such as a laundry and children’s playground. For more information about veteran services and the referral process visit: https://www.slhd.nsw.gov.au/concord/NCVH/

21.01.2022 Meet Digger, the PTSD service dog. Digger came along with his owner to the National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare this week, to the delight of our team. PTSD assistance dogs are trained to reduce the impact of specific symptoms for people living with PTSD and improve their overall quality of life. Digger has completed training to help guide his owner by identifying external signs associated with PTSD stress and encourage a sense of safety. Welcome to the NCVH family, Digger!

21.01.2022 The team at NCVH pay respects to our veterans on ANZAC Day. Lest We Forget.

20.01.2022 Wed like to thank RSL NSW for a donation to Concord Hospital. Concord plays a significant role in caring for Australias veterans and RSL NSW has been a long-s...tanding supporter of the hospital. It has recently donated furniture, electrical equipment and crockery to the hospital, following the closure of the Concord RSL. The donated crockery will be used at Fussell House, which is named after Lieutenant Michael Fussell who was serving with the Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan when he was killed in action in 2008. It will accommodate the families of ex-Australian Defence Force personnel who require treatment at the hospital. Its set to be open soon. The other donated items will also be put to good use. A TV will be placed in a patient waiting room at the hospital and the donated garden furniture will be used at outdoor events, like the Rivendell Flower and Garden Show which is a hospital fundraiser thats on next month, Concords Director of Marketing and Community Relations, Alice Kang, said. And, our staff cafeteria has been given a facelift. We have put the donated tables and chairs in there. We plan to put prints into the donated snap frames to add a little extra colour to the room, she said. Ray James, the acting President of RSL NSW said "RSL NSW has a long and storied relationship with Concord Hospital, whose care and concern for the welfare of our returned soldiers extends from its very opening during World War Two right through to today. Ensuring that items from Concord RSL would benefit the broader community as much as possible was very important to us, and we are delighted that the hospital has already put much of this to good use.

19.01.2022 Research shows there are a variety of ways to help veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Animals have long been used to help returned servicemen and women recover from their deployments. Equine or horse-assisted therapy is rapidly growing in popularity as a way to calm and treat people with addiction and PTSD. ... With the assistance of RSL LifeCare and Racing NSW, staff from Concord Hospital's National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare (NCVH) recently met with veteran Max Streeter. Max, who previously had PTSD and is now an RSL LifeCare equine instructor, runs a pilot program that provides veterans with therapeutic time with horses. During the eight-month long program veterans learn about animal husbandry, including retraining and riding thoroughbreds who are no longer racing. A group of veterans will finish the program with a three day trek on horseback through the Snowy Mountains later this month. 17.01.2022 Colonel Professor Robert Lusby AM is Chair of the new National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare. The retired Australian Army surgeon served in Rwanda, East Timor and Bougainville and says many servicemen and women dont feel normal when they return home. Theyve seen things and theyve done things which are extraordinary and often they keep it in; its not easy to talk about," he says.... There are about 60,000 Australian service men and women who have served over the last two decades, including as peacekeepers, in Rwanda, East Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Solomon Islands. Sooner or later, some of these people will need help, he said. The Centre will offer coordinated ongoing treatment, and staff will be specially trained to deal with the unique challenges veterans may present with. A pilot service begins on 5 August at Concord Hospital. To find out more see www.ncvhconcord.com.au

13.01.2022 The theme of Veterans’ Health Week is social connection. In 2020, we have all had to find ways of maintaining our connections with others as we face a global pandemic for the first time since the end of World War 1. Connections with family, friends and the local community play an important part in mental health and wellbeing. For many veterans, who may feel a sense of loss after military discharge, social connections are one of the most important contributors to their ongoi...ng emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. Concord Hospital’s National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare is Australia’s first comprehensive multi-disciplinary service for treating physical and mental illness in the one location. This Veterans’ Health Week, we spoke to the National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare team about how they are helping to support Australia’s veterans. #VeteransHealthWeek #VHW2020 See more

09.01.2022 Theres a lot of good things about serving in the defence forces, but there's also unique challenges. There can also be a "toughen up" culture where its not always easy to talk about the things that keep us awake at night, or give us the confidence to ask a mate if everything is OK. If a veteran you know is doing it tough, chances are they wont always tell you. ... Sometimes its up to us to trust our gut instinct and ask someone who may be struggling with life are you OK? By asking and listening, we can help our mates and loved ones feel more supported and connected long before they even think about suicide. In this video, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and his wife Mrs Hurley urge everyone to support people who may be struggling with lifes ups and downs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaaFegvfVEs Remember, if you or a veteran you know need support, the National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare could help. 04.01.2022 Today we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Victory in the Pacific Day, or 'VP Day', commemorates Japans unconditional surrender to the Allied Nations in 1945. Sydney Local Health District has long-standing connection with Australias veterans. Concord was selected as the site for a military hospital after WWII erupted in 1939. The 113th Australian General Hospital was designed and built in record time. It employed a workforce of more than 2000, and... admitted its first patients in March 1941. By the time of the Pearl Harbour bombing in December of that year, the 2000-bed military hospital was the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere. The repatriation of Australias veterans continued throughout WW11 and the years that followed, with thousands more returned service men and women cared for at Concord. It is because of this rich history, that Sydney Local Health District established Australias first National Centre for Veterans Healthcare at Concord Hospital. NCVH continues our commitment to caring for veterans of all ages, providing a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to treating physical and mental illness in the one location. 75 years on from the end of World War II, we pause to reflect on our history, remember the sacrifice of those who lost their lives, acknowledge with gratitude the Australian men and women who contributed to the war effort both in the defence of Australia and in medical and nursing roles. Our thanks to NCVH working party chair, Emeritus Professor Robert Lusby AM, for this message of reflection.

04.01.2022 This week our pilot service opened at Concord Hospital. Many years of work have gone into designing and preparing the service to ensure it will provide the specialist physical and mental healthcare veterans require. Much of the work has been led by Operations Manager Kirsty Chapman.... Kirsty has been nursing for almost 20 years. She has held multiple roles including Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) in an Emergency Department (ED), Patient Safety and Quality Nurse Manager and After Hours Nurse Manager at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Kirsty took on a role in Sydney Local Health Districts Nursing Executive where she helped develop the role of Safety Culture Coordinator. Appointed Project Manager for the National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare, Kirsty has guided the concept from inception through to opening. Now Operations Manager, Kirsty is responsible for the smooth running of the Centre, including managing the multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing and allied health professionals.

02.01.2022 The National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare (NCVH) is part of the new $341 million clinical services building being built at Concord Hospital to replace wards constructed in World War II to accommodate repatriated soldiers. A pilot service will open on 5 August 2019 and operate from ground floor of the Medical Centre building. War veteran Damien Thomlinson lost parts of both his arms and legs when he was injured while serving in Afghanistan in 2009. When he returned to Austr...alia for treatment, he was frustrated about the lack of coordinated rehabilitation services for seriously injured veterans. The left hand wasnt talking to the right hand... having to find services..., find different things and you think the entire time How easy it would be if everything was in one spot, Mr Thomlinson said. Hes grateful the new NCVH will offer streamlined access to services for contemporary veterans who have served in peacekeeping and active missions including Rwanda, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Solomon Islands. To find out that theres a hospital like Concord thats putting all those services into one spot making that system easier is so re-assuring for the future. he said.
