25.01.2022 Dame Enid Lyons was the first woman elected to the Australian House of Representatives and the first woman to serve as a member of the Cabinet. 86 years after D...ame Enid first visited the US Capitol, it was an honour to officially open the Dame Enid Lyons Room at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC. Personally, I have drawn great strength from Dame Enid’s legacy and will continue to work to advance the interests of women and girls both in Australia and around the world. 14.01.2022 As both Australia’s Foreign Minister and Minister for Women, I am proud of Australia’s leadership and commitment to advancing gender equality. I was delighted t...o meet Jennifer Klein and Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón, Co-Chairs of The White House Gender Policy Council as my first official meeting in Washington DC. Ms Reynoso Pantaleón also serves as Chief of Staff to First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. The Council was established by Executive Order on International Women’s Day to coordinate whole-of-government efforts on domestic and global gender equality. Australia and the United States are committed to advancing the rights of women and women’s empowerment at home and globally. Today’s meeting provided an opportunity to update the Council on the important work that Australia is doing, including the establishment of a Cabinet Taskforce to accelerate and coordinate our efforts to deliver for Australian women, and our gender-focused initiatives in the Indo Pacific and the delivery of our Women’s Budget Statement 2021-2022. I noted Australia’s focus on ending gender-based violence, promoting women’s economic security including through workforce participation, and enhancing women’s leadership. Our shared commitment to the empowerment of women and girls is crucial as we chart our recovery from COVID-19. President Joe Biden Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
