25.01.2022 If you have ever thought about quitting or are looking for ways to help you quit, have you considered using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)? Nicotine is on...e of the main causes of smoking dependence. Yet unlike tar, harmful chemicals and carbon monoxide found in tobacco smoke, nicotine has not been found to cause cancer. By releasing a smaller, measured dose of nicotine, NRT can help to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Think of it this way if nicotine withdrawal symptoms are like bumps in the road, NRT evens out the surface to make for a smoother journey. As nicotine withdrawals and cravings at the beginning of a quit smoking attempt are strongly associated with relapse, NRT can significantly reduce the risk of returning to smoking in this crucial early stage. You may find your nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings are not as strong when using NRT, therefore reducing the risk of smoking. To find out more about NRT and how it can increase your chances of quitting, speak to your local GP, AMS or a member of the Solid Mob team if you see us out in the community. Or give us a call on 02 6686 3607. #SolidMob #SmokeFreeMob #SmokeFreeHomes #MakingTobaccoEveryonesBusiness #HealthyCultureHealthyCountryHealthyCommunity #TacklingIndigenousSmoking #CloseTheGap #HealthyBundjaLUNGS

20.01.2022 Did you know that Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number 1 cause of early death in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people? Did you also know that Chemicals in cigarette smoke cause the cells that line blood vessels to become swollen and inflamed. This can narrow the blood vessels and can lead to many cardiovascular conditions such as coronary heart disease and stroke, these can lead to several permanent issues such brain damage, loss of limbs, heart attacks and deat...h! Secondhand smoke contains many of the same harmful chemicals that people inhale when they smoke. It can damage the heart and blood vessels of people who don’t smoke in the same way that active smoking harms people who do smoke. In particular secondhand smoke also raises the risk of future coronary heart disease in Infants, children and teens because it damages heart tissue, lowers HDL cholesterol and raises blood pressure. If you are thinking about starting your quit journey or even just looking for more information, give the No Durri For This Murri team a call on 07 5346 9800 #ND4TM #TIS #TacklingIndigenousSmoking #LCTA

19.01.2022 Hey you Mob! Did you know that approximately 85-90% of all Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) cases are caused by smoking? COPD is when someone is suffering from a group of progressive lung diseases, the most common of these being emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking damages the air sacs, airways, and the lining of your lungs. This means these same injured lungs, will have trouble moving enough air in and out, making it hard to breathe. ... Which results in simple exercises like running, walking and swimming become too difficult to manage. So keeping the focus of keeping our lungs and airways clean. ND4TM wants to see some deadly activities from our young mob this school holidays. Please see attached our competition to win an amazing prize pack and we look forward to sharing your videos with community! #ND4TM #TIS #TacklingIndigenousSmoking #LCTA

19.01.2022 With Christmas and New Years just around the corner, now is the time to get working on those resolutions! Did you know that if you smoke a pack of 40's every two days, you are spending approximately $10,000 each year on an item that harms yours and your family's health. If you were to make the resolution to spacing that same pack of 40's out over four days, by next Christmas you could have an additional $5,000 to spend for the holidays.... If that sounds to difficult, you could push it out to a pack every 3 days you would still have $2,500 in you pocket. Not all resolution need to be a big change, take the time to work out what you can manage and achieve, commit to cutting back, not smoking in your cars or homes and make better choices to protect your mob #TacklingIndigenousSmoking #TIS #ND4TM #LetsClearTheAir #LCTA

15.01.2022 Today is WORLD KIDNEY HEALTH DAY- Can such a vital organ in our bodies be impacted by first and second hand smoking? YES!... ~Smoking slows the blood flow to important organs like the kidneys and can make kidney disease worse. ~Uncontrolled or poorly controlled high blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney disease. ~Smoking can also affect medicines used to treat high blood pressure, which then impact the kidneys further. This also applies to your mob breathing in second hand smoke, Make sure you keep your family safe and make the pledge to keep common areas such as cars and homes smoke free! #LCTA #TIS #TacklingIndigenousSmoking #ND4TM

05.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.... This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be. https://www.naidoc.org.au//tyrown-waigana-winner-2020-naid

04.01.2022 Lung Cancer Awareness Month Lung cancer starts in the respiratory system and can spread to other parts of the body. Lung cancer has a low survival rate and smoking is the largest risk factor for lung cancer. Lung cancer is also the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are more likely to develop, be hospitalised for, and die from lung cancer than non-Indigenous Australians!... Whilst numbers are decreasing, compared to non-indigenous Australians, a significantly higher percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, still smoke on a daily basis. As a result of this, lung cancer continues to have a high morbidity rate in community and is the leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. The best way to combat lung cancer is to to keep your homes, cars and lungs smoke free. However the next best way is to get an early as possible diagnosis. some of the symptoms can be- -coughing up blood -a new or changed cough that doesn’t go away -chest pain and/or shoulder pain or discomfort the pain may be worse with coughing or deep breathing -trouble breathing or shortness of breath -hoarse voice -weight loss -loss of appetite -chest infection that doesn’t go away -tiredness or weakness Note: Many conditions can cause these symptoms, not just lung cancer, but should you have any of these consult your GP. Remember, anyone can get lung cancer, even if they have never smoked and 2nd hand smoke can be just as harmful to your family and community. #LungCancerAwarenessMonth #TIS #TacklingIndigenousSmoking #ND4TM #LetsClearTheAir Information sourced from- *healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au* *canceraustralia.gov.au*
