24.01.2022 The Australian Coalition for Inclusive Education (ACIE) has written to the Disability Royal Commission following publication of the Commission's ‘Overview of re...sponses to the first Education and Learning Issues Paper,’ raising a number of issues including: Bias of vested interests: the ‘inevitable’ bias of entities with vested interests in maintaining, or limiting progression from, the ‘education status quo’ for people with disability and the fact that such entities are ‘conflicted’ in representing, and advocating for the human rights of, people with disability; Evidentiary onus: that against the starting human rights premise of the equality of humanity and the fact that over 40 years of research overwhelmingly supports the benefits of Inclusive Education, the onus of demonstrating an objective and sound evidential basis for continuing to segregate students with disability in ‘special’ schools, units and classrooms lies with those that seek to maintain, or limit progression from, the ‘status quo’; and Use of ‘segregated’: that the segregation of students with disability in ‘special’ schools, units and classrooms is, as a human rights and moral matter, properly described as ‘segregation’ rather than ‘sanitised’, ‘euphemised’ or ‘neutralised’ as ‘separate’ or ‘special’/’specialised’ education. 21.01.2022 The NDIS has released its Guide to Plan Management. Plan management is when a provider supports you to manage funding in your NDIS plan. These providers are kn...own as plan managers. Plan management is different from having the NDIA manage funding in your NDIS plan, or you choosing to self-manage your plan. This Guide explains what exactly people with disability and their families should expect from Plan Mangers, including what exactly they should and should not be expected to do. You can download the Guide from the Plan Management page of the NDIS website at: https://tinyurl.com/y58udg7p #NDIS #disability #PlanManagement

21.01.2022 Passion and belief lead to path of fulfilment. A passionate advocate for accessibility, especially in the digital space, it was almost by accident that James Ne...wton, Disability Liaison Officer at TasTAFE, found himself in his role. Sixteen years ago, James, who has Marfan Syndrome with Dysautonomia and who is blind, says he had fallen into that stereotype of disability high unemployment. 06.01.2022 Just wanted to share a story of a young man I met last year at our disability expo in Armidale. Ben Sowden came to my stand with his dad to see what was availa...ble and what we were about. Bens’ dad explained to me that Ben has ASD, doesn’t really read and write, not very interested in school work but wants to go to uni like his sister. I felt that his dad didn’t think there was much for him but after speaking to them both explained that there were a number of ways and opportunities to attend Uni. We discussed his passion for art and photography and that possibly pursuing a course in creative arts or graphic design might interest Ben. After our conversation I could see a real spark in Ben and his father and were really keen to bring his mum over and explain to her what was available and possible. Fast forward 12 months. Ben pursued his passion and has just completed his HSC and his dad wanted to let me know that he was on his way to his graduation. Ben has also been recognised by his high school Armidale Secondary School for his art and photography and was told he would be receiving a high band 5 for his major works. Ben is now applying to go to University of Newcastle through the Wollatuka Institute to undertake a degree in creative arts. Ben has given permission for me to tell his story as well as share some of his major works. All the best for the future Ben.
