21.01.2022 Storytelling has been a powerful activity for some of my clients. It may seem simple (and it is fun!) but it can also trigger memories and feelings. In many ways the story can be related to their own unique life and provide an avenue of expression and even resolution. I've used animal cut outs in recent story telling with some of my clients. They then add elements using oil pastels or textas to create their unique story. Textas and oil pastels are more controlled mediums, so using these materials can enhance a sense of control when expressing their story.

20.01.2022 In this weeks group art therapy session @ Future Independence Disability Services we made superhero masks! Participants enjoyed connecting with their superhero energy and strengths. Some very colourful and creative masks were made and some participants also represented their superhero shield. . Through the symbolism of the superhero, participants can connect with their unique internal strengths.

17.01.2022 Back into the swing of things for 2021! In today's group art therapy session at Future Independence Disability Services we did a collaborative line art piece and we also made some paper weave placemats. . We created a large collaborative line artwork (drawing only lines) on 3 large pieces of paper taped together. This activity promotes, calm, focused attention along with a sense of control through drawing lines with markers. The end result was a very interesting piece! . The ...paper weaving was designed to help build on fine motor skills, hand/eye coordination, develop an understanding of patterns and sequencing (under & over) , problem solving, and using two hands at the same time. . Some very colourful and creative placemats were created! See more

15.01.2022 In this week's group art therapy session @ Future Independence Disability Services we painted some POSITIVITY ROCKS for the garden! The aim was to create a colourful little garden of rocks to uplift and give a positive, happy and joyful feeling. Participants got to engage in something meaningful and it's also a wonderful project they can continue to add to. ... . This activity brought the opportunity to connect with a positive mindset and internal state, through being engaged in painting rocks to reflect ‘positivity’. See more

13.01.2022 We made Nature Easter Eggs during this week @ Future Independence Disability Services. This is a failure free activity that can enhance a sense of creative confidence. A cardboard cutout is used as a base; then you paint and add nature elements - leaves, twigs, rocks, grass. Connecting with nature through art is nourishing and calming for the heart and soul. Mixed media expands creativity and imagination through combining mediums/materials in your own unique way. ... Just for fun, we also made some cute little bunny cups!

11.01.2022 Positivity pots! A great activity I recently guided participants through to help them connect with positive mindsets and positive energy. . The pots held unique, personal meaning for each person through choosing their words and images/patterns. . The pots can be used as a decorative item or for a small plant - nourish the plant with positivity!... . @Future Independence Disability Services See more

10.01.2022 A regular warm-up activity I do with clients is 'what colours are in your heart today?' . Clients don't have to find words to describe how they are feeling, they use colour. It's an intuitive process and there's no right or wrong way to express what's in their heart. . Sometimes this naturally opens up a conversation, other times it provides a sense of release and relief to simply express feelings through colour.

08.01.2022 In yesterday's group art therapy session @ Future Independence Disability Services we experimented with tie dying tissue paper and we made jumbo paddle pop stick puzzles and birds. . To dye the paper we folded it up into a small bundle and dipped it into a mixture of water and food colouring. We'll use the colourful paper next week in another activity. This activity enhances creative flow and confidence through trying something new and fine motor skills through folding the... paper and using tongs to dip the paper in the colour. . Didn't they turn out colourful?! . Puzzles enhance cognitive functioning and problem solving skills and can also increase a sense of self confidence through successfully completing someone else's puzzle! . Participants also made cute little paddle pop birds which was a spontaneous, unplanned activity that enhanced a sense of playfulness and fun! .

07.01.2022 In yesterday's group art therapy session @ Future Independence Disability Services we created stick mandalas. . Participants first filled an A3 mandala circle with colour and then glued small craft sticks to create a unique design. . Placing and gluing the sticks works on fine motor skills. This activity also enhances focus, decision making, problem solving and cognitive skills through organising the sticks and creating their unique design. Patience is also needed in plac...ing the small matchsticks! . The first image is my example. Participants all expressed in their own way, creating unique designs! See more

05.01.2022 Art therapy sessions are also about play and trying new processes! My lovely client today played around with flow paint. My little experiment with some small blobs of paint revealed an elephant! Do you see it?

03.01.2022 My client this morning created a 'Positivity Jar'. The jar will be a tool she can use to help shift into a more positive state of mind. . Inside the jar, she put some positive and inspiring words, images and messages for herself that she can pull out any time she feels like a boost of positivity! . A wonderful tool to help shift our internal state.... (Image shared with client permission)

02.01.2022 I made scratch art plates with a client recently! We covered a paper plate with thick oil pastels, painted it with black acrylic paint and then scratched some patterns when it dried. . There's something so very satisfying about scratching away the black surface. Symbolically, we are scratching away our own emotional and psychological layers to go deeper and reveal what's underneath...
