07.01.2022 Welcome to Terminology Tuesday - today's terminology is Fossilisation Fossilisation refers to the process by which an animal or plant is preserved over time. 1. The animal dies and the soft parts either decompose or get eaten, leaving the skeleton behind. 2. The skeleton becomes buried by small particles of rock, mud or sand. ... 3. As more layers of sediment build up on top, the sediment around the bone compacts and turns to rock. 4. The bones start to dissolve but water seeps through the rock. Minerals in the water replace the bone, leaving a fossil. 5. The ground above the fossil erodes away over time, making the fossil closer to the surface 6. Scientists uncover fossils at dinosaur digs.
