25.01.2022 Today on #worldenvironmentday we celebrate our work on Millennium Bridge House in London which has been shortlisted in the #CommercialBuildingEnergyProject of the Year category in the #EnergyAwards2021. Millennium Bridge House will utilise large chilled and low-temperature hot-water storage tanks, located in the existing basement, with water-cooled chillers to transfer and recover heat. Using chilled and low-temperature hot-water tanks in this way allows for full heat recover...y, so no primary heating plant is required. Whilst the existing building’s roof offered no rooftop amenities, and all usable space was dedicated to HVAC plant, NDY’s thermal-storage design has allowed more than 2,500 m2 of roof space to be used by the public, retail and office building tenants. Thermal-storage systems offer engineers an opportunity to challenge how new and existing buildings are designed. There could be a more sustainable future in which primary heating plant isn’t needed in office buildings as we push towards #netzero carbon design. You can read more about the innovations at Millennium Bridge House here: https://lnkd.in/gUGhH8Q See more

24.01.2022 In celebration of #NAIDOC Week 2020, on Monday the NDY team joined our affiliate Tetra Tech companies Coffey International Development and Eco Logical Australia (ELA) for a virtual panel discussion. Company representatives Jeremy Mitchell (ELA), Jennifer Boxall (NDY) and Clyde Rigney (Coffey) shared their company’s reconciliation journey and highlights this year. Jeremy then provided a powerful and moving reflection on the idea of the social licence to operate, in the contex...t of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement in the wake of the destruction of significant Aboriginal heritage sites. Thank you Jeremy for sharing your valuable insights. NDY team members also had the opportunity to attend an external NAIDOC event hosted by Casey Cardinia Libraries on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Science & Innovation, which was a great celebration of Aboriginal sustainable ingenuity and innovation that has stood the test of time. #NAIDOC #reconciliation #alwayswasalwayswillbe

21.01.2022 For #worlddayforculturaldiversity our Adrian Zhanda, a Fire Protection and Hydraulics Engineer based in our Melbourne office, reflects on the long history of cultural iconography inherent within his Zimbabwean heritage. The shona-speaking people of Zimbabwe use several cultural markers to identify a person and to show their origin, the most important being one’s totem (or ‘mutupo’ in shona). A totem can be an animal, plant or a natural object that becomes the emblem of a clan... or of a traditional family. It is generally believed that people of that clan will portray the attributes of their respective totem. For example, Adrian’s totem is ‘Wadyegora’ represented by the vulture, which is often associated with the cycle of birth and death, along with the cunning ability to visualise and then find what they need to preserve life. We’re proud of the cultural diversity within our team and relish their ability to share a fresh and open dialogue on the world’s many cultural expressions. #worlddayforculturaldiversity #WDCDDD Tetra Tech | United Nations

18.01.2022 We have fond memories of the work we delivered on the now iconic #AAMIPark in Melbourne. A complex and groundbreaking stadium design, it won plenty of awards and set a global benchmark for stadium architecture at the time. It also filled a noticeable gap within Melbourne’s sporting community. At the time the city, even as Australia’s sporting capital, lacked a world class rectangular stadium to host soccer and rugby. The addition of AAMI Park not only created a new sporting... venue for the city, but also a home for the emerging talents of Melbourne Storm and Melbourne Rebels rugby clubs alongside Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City FC football clubs. Our team even took part in a touch rugby event before the official opening of the stadium, having a run on the pitch alongside other project partners. Life doesn't get much better than that! #makingspaceswork | Tetra Tech | Development Victoria

17.01.2022 On this #worlddayforculturaldiversity, we’re giving a shout out to the multiple award-winning New Bendigo Hospital in Australia. Along with outstanding hospital facilities that deliver contemporary healthcare and specialist capabilities to the community, the precinct recognises the rich cultural heritage and history of the Dja Dja Wurrung people who have cared for the lands on which the hospital stands for over 37,000 years. An Aboriginal garden incorporates Indigenous planti...ng and artefacts that contribute to the psychological and mental health of the community. For example, a courtyard contains plants and seeding reflective of cultural symbols and a fire pit space where smoking ceremonies can be held. The outcome is a tranquil space that encourages a deeply spiritual and mutual understanding of diversity within the community. With an offering beyond contributions to artistic and cultural design, the local Indigenous community also plays an active role in support services within the facility, providing both employment and healthcare consultancies. 05.01.2022 Trend Controls and Smart Buildings Magazine recently partnered up to deliver a series of panel sessions, exploring the future of smart buildings and the role that BMS technologies play in delivering a superior outcome. Our Oliver Barker, NDY’s London based Technical Director Digital Buildings, was on Panel #2: Answering the Big Questions with Data Analytics. So, what role does data play in managing built environments? Oliver says We haven’t scratched the surface of data in... building management yet. We don’t know what data is out there until we start collecting and profiling every system with a microprocessor in a building, but as data is being collected and shifted into bigger cloud-based databases, we’re starting to see fault detection and diagnosis and platforms which allow you to profile your BMS more and maybe start to diagnose issues before they happen. It’s also not going to be long before we’ll be required to actively report on this data as well. If you’re reporting on sustainability and Net Zero Carbon having the data there in a usable format is going to massively optimise that process. You can watch the full panel session here: https://bit.ly/34rV1PN #makingspaceswork Tetra Tech

04.01.2022 This #worlddayforculturaldiversity, Mechanical Engineer Aslaug Blitzner celebrates her Norwegian heritage from her home in Sydney. Norwegian Constitution Day falls on 17th May, celebrating the creation of the country’s constitution in 1814 following 400 years of Danish rule. Whilst it took them a little longer to achieve independence (they became a prize for Sweden during the Napoleonic Wars), by 1905 Norway was forging its own path. For Norwegian children, Constitution Day ...is a big occasion. It marks the first icecream of the year and the kids get to be the centre of attention in parades across Norway (and the Norwegian King has to wave for 4 hours straight as all of the kids in Oslo walk past his balcony). With the country in party mode, people dress up in national costume (called bunad) and celebrate with friends and family. Each area of Norway has its own special outfit, with different floral patterns and silver brooches connected to the local culture. It also provides information on the person wearing it; for example, if you’re married you wear a full silver belt, and a massive gold crown on your wedding day. Thanks Aslaug, icecream and bunad sounds like a good mix to us! #worlddayforculturaldiversity #WDCDDD Tetra Tech | United Nations

03.01.2022 Senior Project Engineer Gerry Espinola recently conquered the demanding 100km London 2 Brighton Ultra Challenge, raising funds along the way for his chosen charity Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, who ‘grant magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions’. Starting out as a fitness goal that he hoped would combat his self-described ‘COVID laziness’, our Gerry said the walk was quite an experience. My two friends and I started... at 8am on Saturday and I completed all 100 km at around 1pm on Sunday afternoon, for a total walking time of 29 hours. I was pretty delusional the last 20 km with zero sleep, but nonetheless was able to finish. Apparently only 70% of the participants were able to finish their distance. 03.01.2022 This National Reconciliation Week coincides with endorsement of NDY’s second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) by Reconciliation Australia. Our Innovate RAP outlines actions that work towards achieving our organisation’s unique vision for reconciliation. Commitments within this RAP allow NDY to be aspirational and innovative in order to help us gain a deeper understanding of our sphere of influence and establish the best approach to advance reconciliation. Our Innova...te RAP focuses on developing and strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, engaging staff and stakeholders in reconciliation and developing and piloting innovative strategies to empower Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Reconciliation Australia’s RAP program has provided NDY with an invaluable framework that has shaped our efforts to more effectively contribute to positive social, cultural and economic outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
