24.01.2022 To all holistic & integrative veterinarians.
21.01.2022 Lets talk about bloat in dogs. Certain breeds are predisposed, such as Great Danes, Hounds, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dogue de Bordeaux, etc, depending on how deep their chest is. If bloat is decompressed quickly by a veterinarian upon onset, recovery is fairly quick and unremarkable. ... As a vet who has worked in a busy hospital prior my holistic journey, I’ve seen numerous bloat that started twisting, almost like a balloon - into a potentially fatal condition we know as GDV (Gastric Dilatation Volvulus). In susceptible breeds, carminative herbs like Fennel, Cardamom, Peppermint can be used in their diet to reduce and prevent bloating! #TCVM #HolisticPetVet #FoodTherapy #RawFeeding #dogsofinstagram #petsofinstagram #HolisticHealing #Herbs

13.01.2022 Magnolia blossom. What is your favourite nature’s beauty in Spring? Did you know? Magnolia flower is used in a Classical Chinese herbal formula called Xin Yi San. It is used to treat an imbalance associated with Wind-Cold, to unblock sinus & nasal congestion. ... It also moves and lifts Qi around the upper respiratory region - essentially resolving stagnation. #TCVM #TraditionalChineseVeterinaryMedicine #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #Nutrition #FoodTherapy #HerbalMedicine #Chineseherbalmedicine #Dogsofinstagram #Petsofinstagram #HolisticHealth #HolisticPet #RawFeeding #Freshdiet
13.01.2022 IBS (Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome) in dogs & cats. In my experience, healing the gut takes time with the right food & herbs. In TCVM, there are usually 2 main patterns associated with IBS:... Liver stagnation with Spleen (gut) disharmony. Spleen Qi Deficiency +/- Damp. The Liver system plays a massive role in controlling the flow of Qi and balance of the Spleen/Stomach (gut) system. With a predominantly Liver stagnation pattern, tongue is usually darker in colour (with purple tinge) with tight & wiry pulses. As the Liver system is also in charge of emotions, patients may also be anxious or fearful. Appetite is usually good, with unpredictable bowel movements & frequent belching. With excess heat accumulated as a result of the stagnation, there may be conjunctivitis involved (as Liver opens up to the eye). With a mainly Spleen Qi Deficiency pattern, tongue presents pale pink with weak pulses. Appetite is usually poor and patients will appear lacklustre & weak. Diarrhoea is frequent, without foul smells. Treating the right pattern is important to achieve desired results. If Liver is involved then balancing out the Liver is as important as our focus on the gut, using appropriate foods & herbs. This is 2 yr old Whiskey whom I treated for a Liver-Spleen disharmony. When I first saw him he could only eat cooked kangaroo & sweet potato, anything else would give him the runs. His body would feel hot, had conjunctivitis & mucous in stools frequently. Fast forward 4 months, he is now on a fully raw diet, enjoying his raw bones, as well as time at the beach! Hope this helps you understand IBS as it is treatable, without need for long term corticosteroids. #TCVM #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #Acupuncture #chinesemedicine #foodtherapy #rawfeeding #realfood #dogsofinstagram #petsofinstagram #catsofinstagram #perth #westernaus

07.01.2022 Skin issues are by far are the most challenging disease to tackle, from providing symptomatic relief to correcting specific underlying imbalances. In TCVM, there are often multiple layers of Deficiencies and Excesses to correct. I simply do not have a protocol approach. I treat what I see, feel and smell. This is 10 months old Frankie with a history of environmental allergy to grass, turning his belly red raw. When I saw him, his redness had gone but now presents with ha...ir loss on his back that isn’t itchy. It is also negative on multiple mite-scrap test. On TCVM examination, he had a very pale pink and dry looking tongue, deep + weak femoral pulses, cool to touch limbs and lower back. Skin is dry with large white flakes. His signs corresponds to a Deficiency in Blood as my primary pattern to resolve. Blood moving and nourishing herbs, plus a fresh diet supplementing mainly Blood tonics such as sardines, beef/beef livers, dates, figs etc are recommended. Photos taken 5 weeks apart. Now onto the next layer of imbalance.. #TCVM #TraditionalChineseVeterinaryMedicine #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #Nutrition #FoodTherapy #Dogsofinstagram #Petsofinstagram #HolisticHealth #HolisticPet #RawFeeding #Freshdiet
06.01.2022 I use a probiotic yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) to treat diarrhea in dogs very effectively, with or without herbs depending on root cause. SB works by crowding out bad bacteria and maintaining population of good gut bacteria. Did you know the most commonly prescribed drug for diarrhea is an antibiotic called Metronidazole? It’s super effective however it also wreck havoc on the gut biome; as a result I’ve seen numerous dogs become reliant on antibiotics as ...a ‘preventative’ for diarrhea. Recent studies have shown that just a week’s worth of broad spectrum antibiotics will wipe out enough gut flora that will take at least 2 years to regenerate, which is of course highly dependent on individual health status, diet, supplements etc. I get asked a lot on if we should be putting dogs on probiotics whilst on antibiotics. You need SB, to protect existing gut flora when on any antibiotic, then a course of probiotics after. SB is an over-the-counter probiotic, important thing to note is dogs will require at least 5-7.5 billion CFU per dose for it to be effective, regardless of your dog’s weight. #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #TCVM #dogsofinstagram #petsofinstagram #rawfeeding #guthealth #probiotics #naturalhealing
05.01.2022 There’s a lot of talk about supplementing probiotics into your dogs’ diet to improve gut health but very little mention about using prebiotics. Prebiotics are essentially fibre that are not meant for the gut to digest, but to feed the good gut bacteria! If you find yourselves using a probiotic (whether it’s for you or your dog), remember to include some prebiotics as part of the diet! ... Some natural sources of prebiotics for dogs include foods like flaxseed meal, green bananas, apples & seaweed. For us humans! Other foods will include chicory root, garlic, onions, Jerusalem artichokes, leeks, asparagus, barley, oats, wheat bran.. and the list goes on. Looking after your dog’s (and yours) gut health will be your best investment you’d ever make. #TCVM #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #FoodTherapy #Nutrition #FoodisMedicine #Veterinary #dogsofinstagram #petsofinstagram #catsofinstagram #perth #prebiotics #probiotics #rawfeeding

03.01.2022 Another tongue diagnosis! Clancy is 13 years old. He recently had a skin tumour removed. He has some age related arthritis, a ravenous appetite and has a preference for cooler surfaces. His stools are normal and appears to be in good spirits otherwise. ... What’s your impression of his tongue? - RED - Dry - No coating - Slightly wrinkled, flabby. Femoral pulses are deep and rapid, in fact weaker on the left (Yin & Blood pulse). Break it down: - Red, dry tongue with weak & rapid pulses on the left = Yin Deficiency. - No coating on tongue = Yin Deficiency. - Flabby tongue = Qi Deficiency - Preference for cold = false heat; Yin Deficiency. - Skin tumour = lapse in Wei Qi (Immunity); general Qi Deficiency - Ravenous appetite without vomiting is a sign of good Spleen Qi (gut). Stomach Yin Deficiency will be considered if vomiting. TCVM pattern diagnosis? Bi Syndrome (arthritis) associated with Kidney Yin and Qi Deficiency Kidney element is heavily involved due to its control over normal ageing processes. Therapy will mainly focus on boosting his immunity (Wei Qi) and nourishing Kidney Yin and Qi. Some Yin nourishing foods include Turkey, Duck, Crocodile, Pork, organic honey, black sesame seeds, black beans, pears, mangoes! #TCVM #TraditionalChineseVeterinaryMedicine #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #dogsofinstagram #pugsofinstagram #petsofinstagram #perth #acupuncture #herbalmedicine #foodtherapy #rawfeeding

01.01.2022 Something you should know about feeding raw bones to dogs & cats. As many of you would know - I advocate for fresh, biological & species-appropriate diets, and that includes feeding raw bones! Why? ... 1. Source of natural calcium 2. Dental & gum health Important things to note Choose a type of raw bone that is suitable for your dog’s jaw size. Growing puppies requires twice as much dietary calcium as an adult dog. Eg. At least 15% of a raw diet needs to be bone for a puppy. Stool consistency generally helps you decide how much bones your pup can tolerate! Do not feed cooked bones as they cannot be digested. AVOID weight-bearing bones of cows/sheep/pigs. These are typically your marrow bones which can splinter and cause problems, especially in larger dogs who has the ability to crack them. New to feeding raw bones? Chicken wing tips or necks are a good place to start; they are soft & crushes easily. #HolisticPetVet #HolisticHealing #Rawfeeding #Rawdiet #dogsofinstagram #catsofinstagram #petsofinstagram #perth #rawbones #TCVM #Nutrition
