When our homelessness support services help people and families gain safe and secure homes we see the measurably better outcomes they have and how they can address the complexities that create homelessness. We look forward to more Victorians having a place to call home and making sustainable connections in their communitiesand we hope other states follow." - Tom Dalton, CEO, Neami National Find out more: bit.ly/3nAYa8a

23.01.2022 Last year, together with Wellways Mind Australia Flourish Australia One Door Mental Health Open Minds and Stride Mental Health, we surveyed people who access our services to find out the impact of COVID-19 among people who access psychosocial support services. The survey demonstrated a high level of resilience; and indicated that people had shown great adaptability to services being delivered virtually. However, the lack of accessibility to clinical and community services and experiences of increased social isolation have led to a deterioration in mental health for many. More than half of the people who responded said they had experienced a decline in their mental health since COVID-19. You can read the full report at https://bit.ly/3dPhD1y

18.01.2022 Earlier this year our Step-Link team were joined by the NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and NSW Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services, Gareth Ward. The Ministers met with William, who had been sleeping rough when the pandemic hit. William was supported into secure housing by our STEP-Link team as part of the NSW Government's COVID stimulus funding. The Treasurer referenced meeting William in his 2020-2021 Budget Speech where he announced the expansion of ...the Together Home funding. Well done to NSW for recognising the needs of people sleeping rough. Read the full Budget Speech here: bit.ly/2ILpxgS
17.01.2022 Today is International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD), a day to increase awareness, understanding and acceptance of people living with a disability. The 2020 theme ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’ focuses on increasing understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent. This is a valuable reminder that we can’t make assumptions about whether a person does or does not live with disability, or that a person only has one type of disability. It highlights ...the importance of being inclusive in everything we do. At Neami we are acknowledging IDPWD this year by learning more about how we can create more accessible and inclusive online spaces for meetings and groups with consumers, carers and staff with Amber from the Australian Network on Disability. 15.01.2022 Today is National Close the Gap Day, a day to pledge support for achieving Indigenous health equality by 2030. The Close the Gap campaign was launched in 2006 as part of a public call to address the unacceptable gap in life expectancy and other health indicators between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. As a national mental health organisation, Neami is committed to improving mental health and wellbeing in all local communities, ...recognising the importance of addressing the unique experiences of disadvantage within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. Our first Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was launched in June 2019 and outlines actions that work towards our vision for reconciliation. We look forward to sharing the next iteration of our RAP later this year. Visit our website to view or download the current Neami RAP: bit.ly/2xaxGW8 #CloseTheGap #Reconciliation

13.01.2022 It’s with great sadness that we share that Neami National’s highly successful Street to Home service will shut at the end of next month following the recently announced homelessness sector reforms in South Australia. We’re incredibly proud of Neami’s highly skilled and dedicated Street to Home team. Over the last four years, the team have listened to people’s experiences, and we have created a service that not only supported positive outcomes for people experiencing homelessn...ess, but has also contributed to sector innovation and reform. During the pandemic, in a mammoth effort our Street to Home team linked 500 people with emergency accommodation hotels and then intensively supported them while they were there. The team worked relentlessly which led to 260 people moved into homes in a matter of months, our states largest call to action for housing and support for rough sleepers in history. Continuity of care and a smooth transition for people supported by Street to Home, will be the key focus for the team over the coming weeks. 05.01.2022 "Brave is condescending. It is shame repackaged as respect. Unwrap the words, and you’ll feel their sting. Instead of brave, I’d rather be thought of as kind. Thoughtful. Fierce." An insightful article by Katerina Bryant for The Guardian discussing how it feels to be called 'brave' in response to disclosing her mental illness.

05.01.2022 For Trans Day of Visibility this year we want to share the story of a Neami team member, Amelia. "It has taken me quite a long time to feel comfortable and safe to be my true and authentic self within a workplace and the wider work network, given the reduced visibility and lack of understanding in the community. It’s only been in recent years that I have begun to feel more at ease with being a non-binary person (using They/Them pronouns). It was only when coming back to Nea...mi after a short break, and seeing that the ID cards had options to add preferred pronouns, and pronouns were encouraged on email signatures/zoom names, did I feel comfortable with being my authentic self within the workplace. Having pronouns visible, or encouraging conversations around best pronouns to use helps those of us who may use different gender pronouns to feel included and validated for who they are. It’s an easy way to signal to others that you are in a safe space which might be the difference in someone feeling comfortable as a service user or as a colleague around you." #Pronouns #Inclusion #TransDayofVisbility
04.01.2022 "How our teams adapted is remarkable - as is the way the sector came together and kept important conversations going - sharing what was and wasn’t working. We learnt a great deal about Neami, we’ve ensured that lived experience, co-design and data-informed decisions remain at the forefront of Neami’s work." - Tom Dalton, Neami National CEO Watch the video message from Tom Dalton, Neami CEO and Tony Nippard, Neami Chair.

02.01.2022 You are given the skills, the tools and the connections to keep you well and can keep you from hospital, not just to fix you up for a few days.
