25.01.2022 Much of this weekend will be spent celebrating #thefestivalofBron, a Covid-delayed 60th for our dear friend. There will be much good food, fine wine, and plenty of conviviality. And here is the first part - goat from @thegourmetgoatlady supplied by @featherandboneprovidore with the recipe from their excellent #theethicalomnivore book.... It’s going to be a great weekend! #realfood #goodfriends #celebration
21.01.2022 It’s always exciting when a producer who you’ve been supporting and encouraging makes the leap and scales up. Pasture raised organic fed chicken from @kanookacreekart here in the Pappinbarra Valley Find it at #ecowild Wauchope... #pastureraised #delicious #realfood #ethicalchicken #pappinbarra
19.01.2022 Such abundance, and the difference a year (and drought breaking rain) makes. This is the inflorescence (flower spike) of one of our macadamia trees, the perfume from which will shortly fill the air. Each flower has the potential to become a fruit, in this case a nut. Yes they can be extremely prolific. I love the way nature responds ‘in the moment’ to what’s happening around her - last year these trees had shed many leaves, new spring growth was minimal and flowers sparse.... It’s empowering to see Her resilience as we continue our revolutions around the Sun. #abundance #natureprovides #macadamias #gratitude
19.01.2022 This is from one of our Meals In The Fields local food celebrations at Near River, and we’ve gotten around to getting it printed to hang on our wall. Taken by the talented Lindsay Moller Productions, it’s reminded us of some of the great times we’ve had here amongst our commitment to real food and community. Must do it again sometime. #realfood #mealsinthefields #community #celebration #portmacquarie
18.01.2022 For nigh on eight years we’ve been growing rare breed pasture raised pork, and every week, once we worked out what we were doing, Drew and his crew at Drury Lane Eatery have been taking a whole shoulder or leg and working their magic. This is today’s result - #arepas with pulled pork, thick cut tomatoes, onion, avocado relish and house garlic slaw. It’s delicious - we had them for lunch! Big thanks for what you do and your support of growers and the part you play in our local... food community. Long may it last! #realfood #keepingitlocal #portmacquarie #pasturedpork #loveyoulongtime #knowyourfarmerknowyourfood
18.01.2022 Yesterday marked the conclusion of the #festivalofandrew with a few folk sitting down to a meal. So good to catch up with friends with good food and wine. Thanks to all who came to join the celebration and all those that lended a helping hand. #justlikemealsinthefields
18.01.2022 Thanks @bgreeno for your skill and care, and @featherandboneprovidore for your partnership. #knowyourfarmerknowyourfood #Repost @featherandboneprovidore ... Team effort. When the chef does justice to all the work that goes into delivering the produce - our work, the farmer’s work and the life of the pig. Thank you to the @nearriverproduce Berkshire pig that arrived whole at our place and from which this leg was taken to cure for this ham. Thank you to Farmers Andrew and Therese Hearn who, along with the other visionary NSW pig farmers we work with, choose to prioritise animal, environment and human welfare above all else and manage their farms as regenerative, holistic ecosystems. Thanks to @bgreeno for getting it and doing such a ripper job of glazing and presenting this ham and honouring the whole cycle. Now it’s your turn! This ham trolley will be strolling seductively through the @hotelcentennial Or if you want your own lovely pasture-raised ham, our Xmas orders close on 14December. #pastureraised #regenerativeagriculture #walkingthetalk #ham #christmas #pasturedpigs #heritagebreed #diversity #feast #celebration #community
16.01.2022 We’ve been mulling over this for sometime, and have realised that our affair with Facebook has soured, so we’ll be parting ways. There will still be posts on our Instagram account @nearriverproduce (and yes we know it’s owned by Facebook) as there less negativity on that platform. Thanks for your follows, likes, comments and all round general support.... See you in the Spring.
15.01.2022 Had a lovely day sharing this with good friends for a Covid-delayed 60th celebration. Life is good. #pasturedpork... #realfood #goodfriends #goodtimes See more
14.01.2022 Of drought and flooding rain. 2 images 18 months apart. Today’s the equinox, and normally there’d be a post about its relevance for those of us that follow the seasons.... It also happens to be my 60th birthday, so I could chat about that. However, again (still) we are at the impact of another record breaking, nay, unprecedented weather event. ‘The most rainfall in one day ..... Highest river level since records .... We are fine and our animals are too. Some fences have been lost and we’ll be without power and mobile service for a few days. Not so our neighbours. Their house that’s been standing since 1880 is gone. Sheds and tanks all washed away. No thing left. What’s not okay is that this has all been predicted - extended droughts, wildfires, pandemics and increased extreme weather events. And not by boffins from far off lands, but our own world leading scientists. Also what’s not okay is the increased insurance premiums that are certain to come following the increases from the fires (remember them?) So @melindapavey instead of sending gratuitous birthday cards (our tax dollars hard at work, not) how about weaning that #NationalMiningParty of yours off of coal and gas? Or can we all send our insurance bills to you? #headsstillinthesand #dowereallypaytheirsalary #seething
14.01.2022 Either the washing machines broken or ...... Mixing biodynamic soil preparations in a copper, with water heated to 40 degrees, agitate for an hour, by hand, stirring one way to create a vortex, then stirring the opposite direction inducing chaos. When we first arrived at Near River we dabbled in BioDynamics for a year and moved on.... Now as we replenish and rebuild our soils from the impact of the drought, these are practices we are committing to long term. Healthy soils, healthy animals, healthy humans. #biodynamics #soillife #ineedanewarm
13.01.2022 Planning on including some pork in your meals this week? We’ve updated the online store @portmacquariefoodhub for our Mid North Coast customers, and there’s a whole host of other great local produce on offer there as well. Don’t eat like a king, eat like a local Sydney-siders can call or drop in to @FeatherandBone In Marrackville and source our pork along with a whole range of ethically raised goods. And thanks for the image.... And you can also now find us @farmtofridge in the Great Lakes area, another collaborative group of small scale growers and producers. Get to it! #realfood #pastureraised #pasturedpork #knowyourfarmerknowyourfood #midnorthcoast
12.01.2022 It’s time again for application of biodynamic preparations, ideally taking place at specific times in each monthly lunar cycle. Practitioners recommend the use of natural tools where possible. I went looking for a horsehair brush to use to spread BD500 once we’ve prepared it. No luck, however appropriately I found a hog hair brush - perfect!... #biodynamics #soilislife #happysoilhappyplants
12.01.2022 When patience and Nature align. This is the fruit from Lemon Aspen, (Acronychia acidula) an endemic rainforest tree to Queensland. We planted an allee of them 12 years ago - scroll through to see the gun planting team #jannahearne and @thereseatnrp from 2009... Prior to this year, the climate here recently has been very un-rainforest, and for a few weeks there at the end of 2019, it looked like we may lose them. Since then, it’s been very rainforest-like, and they’ve responded accordingly. This haul is off to @catherinekeiley the cake maker at @urbangrainbakery Probably best in pastries or ice cream as the flavour is like grapefruit and lemon. Message for your own supply. #nativefoods #fruitoftheland #endemic #hastingshinterland #midnorthcoast #workingwithnature
11.01.2022 Butterflied, organic fed, pasture raised chicken, cooked over pear wood. Read on for the full story. #Repost @andrewatnrp... Anyone that knows me understands that I don’t cook - ‘I just grow them’. At least that was the case. The latest @chefstablenetflix series is about BBQ, and whilst there’s a couple of eps about Southern USA, the most engaging is with Lennox Hastie of @firedoor_surryhills As you’d expect, it details his lengthy journey - that it has been - though what really inspired me was Lennox saying that no two cooking sessions are the same as the fire is always different! That has totally sparked my interest as it spoke to me as a farmer. So I’m cooking, over fire. This was last night’s effort, a super local chicken from #kanookacreekfarm that we look forward to telling you more about shortly. It was delicious, and the pumpkin was great too!

11.01.2022 We shared plenty of delicious food over the Easter break, with much of the focus on produce from our valley. However this dessert that my wonderful wife @thereseatnrp has mastered was simply the best. Salted caramel semifreddo with puffed corn, black sesame seed and a splash of vincotto from @theotherchef.portmacquarie ... 10.01.2022 Food : Tradition : Culture Thanks for sending through your images of our hams in your festivities, however this story about family, memories and tradition touched us. ‘Just wanted to say thanks for the amazing ham.... My parents said it was the best ham they’ve had since they had their own pigs when we were still dairying. The lovely thing was that it prompted lots of memories & stories from my Dad (who has Alzheimer’s) about the farm when he was a kid which was the best present we could have got.’ There’s lots to be said about food and the traditions around sharing it at celebratory occasions and the memories that are created and linked to these events. We trust you got to create some excellent memories however you celebrated during this festive season. old dairy bails courtesy #long-toothedhinterlanddweller #realfood #memories #traditions #culture #family #community #thepoweroffood
10.01.2022 We always love a local collaboration and this one includes beer, so it’s even better. Our mates at @drurylaneeatery have gotten together with the crew from @bucket.brewery in Kempsey and created a summer beer that is going down a treat. Dru was banging on about some special Tasmanian hops that they’ve used, and I was asking about the penny-farthing in the graphic - Dru has some unique bikes though I’ve not seen him on one of these.... We could make up a story about how there’s a drop of Dru’s bike riding perspiration in each can, though I doubt you’d believe us! Available with a meal @drurylaneeatery and @billsfishhouse have it on their list too. #portmacquarie #craftbeer #keepingitlocal #knowyourproducer #midnorthcoast
10.01.2022 A perfect start to a weekend away filled with good wine and good food. #huntervalleywine #needmoreglasses
09.01.2022 I spoke earlier in the week to Yvonne @blurry.food about the impact the floods have had on us here at Near River. Check it out. #Repost @blurry.food ... So grateful to talk with food and farm folks from the NSW Mid North Coast about their experiences with the recent floods. Peter Ridland, who had two minutes to evacuate diners from @whalebonewharf during peak Friday dinner service, and where the force of the water entering the kitchen was enough to capsize fridges. Maryline Green, co-owner of Gourmand Ingredients in Port Macquarie, who threw out three skip bins' worth of damaged produce. And how about that gallows humour. The fences at @nearriverproduce washed away ("Our pigs are a bit more free-range than they should be": Andrew Hearne, whose prized pork can be found @featherandboneprovidore), the prawns in the Myall River will now wash out to sea ("It will make king prawn catches quite good": Ross Fidden, a fishetman with 46' years experience ), and tales of chasing biscuit packets down a flooded Short Street, and a water-damaged ceiling ("When it rains it pours": the amazing Maryline Green, a New Caledonian-born woman of Vietnamese heritage with Big Aunty Energy to match.) Read about it @gourmettraveller, visit these towns, and support these and other businesses if you can. See more
08.01.2022 A late lunch to finish a thoroughly enjoyable if slightly indulgent weekend. For sometime a meal at @marganwine with their garden to plate ethos has been high on our list - the wines are pretty good too! Even managed to help put their chooks away at the end of the day.... #huntervalleywinecountry @ Margan Wines & Restaurant
04.01.2022 This is devastating at any time, and as fellow ethical farmers we can only imagine the sense of loss. Please do anything you can to assist and help them get things back up and running. Long Table Farm is the sort of farming we all want to see more of - they strive for sustainable farming practices done in an ethical way where their animals are pasture-raised and treated with respect. A lot of what they love and do is dependent on the machinery, tools and equipment needed f...or day-to-day operations, all stored in their ginormous custom-built barn. In the early hours of this morning, the farm was devastated with the loss of this prized barn. 8 fire trucks attended, but the loss was devastating. As fire tore through it, Brent and Bec could only helplessly watch as it all was lost. Brent and Rebecca, along with help from family and friends, lovingly designed and built this barn from scratch, from foundation through to the finishing touches. Perched on the hill above the farm, it was an impressive structure and, as mentioned, housed everything important to daily farm life. For their business and livelihood to be sustained, along with their passion and drive, we thought we would encourage everyone, where possible, to help out. As all of us know, Brent and Rebecca are two of the most selfless people we have ever met. Their whole life philosophy is that when you have enough, you share, you pay it forward. Now it’s our chance to repay the love and kindness to them. Monetary donations to this GoFundMe page will help with the demolition and removal of the remnants of the barn as a starting point. Donations or loaning of machinery or tools and equipment is just as valuable. And if you have nothing to give, your time and energy to help out would be just as appreciated. In the spirit of a good old fashioned barn raising, we would love to see the Long Table Farm community rally around the two people who always rally around us. Please let us know how you would love to help. - Loren Pakalniskis (sister and all-round LTF supporter) https://www.gofundme.com/f/long-table-barn-raising
04.01.2022 Ugly delicious These usually get snapped up by our customers, however I managed to hold onto these cheeks, and now we know why they are highly sought. As one of the hardest working muscles in a pig, they require slow cooking. These were cooked in cider and were delicious.... #realfood #pasturedpork #uglydelicious #knowypurfarmerknowyourfood #donteatlikeakingeatlikealocal
02.01.2022 One of the dishes from dinner @muserestaurant_ Wow, what a delightful experience. From our arrival all the way through to being dropped back to our accommodation we were cared for. The attentive floor team ensured our evening was thoroughly enjoyable. And the food was all we expected and more. This is the pork dish - @thereseatnrp likes to see how others cook it - loin with cotechino, kohlrabi and winter apples. Thanks Georgia and @chef_gordon_cooke for spoiling us. That’s a mighty crew you have @troymuse
01.01.2022 Spring delight no. 1 White mulberry (White Shahtoot, Morus Alba) Fructose in it’s highest form - these are sooo sweet.... And we get to share them with the possums, flying foxes and birds. They are prolific so there’s plenty to go around, and you don’t need too many. Bonus ladybird too #springdelights #whitemulberry #itsthesimplethings
