23.01.2022 Heres a note for the Government
22.01.2022 Today was the first hearing of the Senate Wage Theft Inquiry. We heard first hand from regulators, unions and experts about the wage theft crime wave and what ...can be done about it. Sadly not a single member of the Coalition tuned in or turned up to the hearing. Apparently millions of dollars in unpaid wages and superannuation doesnt bother them. Apparently that too often temporary migrant workers are the victims of organised wage theft and are left to little to no support isnt a concern for them. And apparently they arent interested in the solutions to these problems suggested by todays witnesses.
22.01.2022 Get in touch if you are a casual at Greater Shepparton City Council. The ASU has had real success getting the jobs of 30 casual workers at Greater Shepp convert...ed to a permanent role. But we dont want to stop there, every worker deserves a secure job. We estimate there are still more than 100 casual workers who are likely to be eligible for a permanent role. So if you are a casual worker at Greater Shepparton City Council who wants more secure employment, or you know one, get in touch at [email protected]

18.01.2022 SHIPYARD SPARKIES DEMAND WATERTIGHT ASBESTOS PROTOCOLS ETU members working at Balmain Shipyard have insisted on strict safety protocols around three Indonesian-...built ferries found to have contained asbestos. The Balmain facility maintains the Sydney ferry fleet which will include the new river class vessels. Weve had weeks of consultation with members putting some hard questions to management, said ETU NSW & ACT Secretary Justin Page. The testing protocols in place are substantial, but union members demanded additional safeguards and warnings. Asbestos was detected in gaskets after the ferries arrived in Newcastle in August. Unions immediately banned the boats and the gaskets were removed. However Transdev, which operates the ferries, cannot guarantee they are 100% asbestos-free. The ETU has zero tolerance for the deadly mineral which has killed many members. Australia banned asbestos in 2004 but that ban has been breached and asbestos found in trains and other imported machinery. Its a scandal that supply chain processes allowed asbestos to be used in these ferries. This is another compelling argument for all future public transport to be manufactured in Australia, where we can guarantee safety and quality and generate much-needed employment, said Justin
18.01.2022 Bumped into some guys cutting compressed stone for a kitchen in my neighbourhood. No masks. No wetting down.... I had a chat to them. They were subcontractors, paid very little. No one told them the dangers. But someone at the other end of the contract is making a lot of money.

13.01.2022 The Covid-19 pandemic isnt stopping ASU members talking about their pay and conditions at work. With masks, shields and social distancing to stay safe, the dep...ot crew at Manningham City Council got together to talk about their next enterprise agreement. This is what it looks like to use our collective strength to get better outcomes for members.
12.01.2022 Dave started working at Ballina RSL Club in August 2005. A jack of all trades, hes done every role from kitchen-hand to back dock and everything in between. H...e even does maintenance jobs around the club when needed. Dave is a loyal staff member who has given 15 years of his working life to the Ballina RSL Club. But the way he and his colleagues are being treated is shameful, told to take cuts to their hours or risk being sacked. "Theyve made me feel like a nothing working there. They have made us robots ready to be dismantled when they feel like it. I dont like it one little bit." Today union members are finally sitting down with Ballina RSL Club management to negotiate their conditions. These workers deserve to be treated with respect, and they will not give in until they reach a fair outcome. Show your support for Dave and his colleagues by signing their petition here: www.megaphone.org.au/p/ballina-rsl

08.01.2022 We miss smoko with our work mates, the morning coffee chat, the after work drinks... we even miss the actual work we do in between. But even when we cant see each other, we are together in solidarity.

05.01.2022 After 8 years as National Secretary, today Paul Bastian is retiring. Paul joined the union as a 16 year old shipwright apprentice and never looked back. In his ...39 years of membership, he has been a fierce advocate for working people, going up against multinational giants like James Hardie and winning. We thank him for everything he has done and wish him well in his retirement. He is being succeeded by Steve Murphy. Steve joined the AMWU as an apprentice at Tubemakers in the Hunter and was the NSW/ACT State Secretary until he was appointed as National Secretary. Youll be hearing more from Steve and his vision for the AMWU in coming days, so watch this space!
05.01.2022 Today the AWU and AROC have launched a new report calling for action to bolster our nations fuel security and secure our last four remaining oil refineries. In... the event of a crisis, Australia would run out of fuel in a few weeks. The coronavirus pandemic has shown how fragile supply chains can be and how dangerous it is to completely rely on them. A crisis which shuts down our fuel imports would be devastating to the economy and national security. Within a few short weeks, Australia would not be able to feed or defend itself. Thats why we are calling for urgent upgrades to our local refineries and oil storage capacity funded by a small levy on petrol. An early copy of our report was provided to the Federal Government, who have today also released their response. The announced support for fuel refineries will play an important role in securing their future. Additional government investment in storage capacity is a good start, but this is only a fraction of what we need to build in order to secure our fuel supply. The State Governments also have a large role to play here and need to come to the party. Read the full story here: https://loom.ly/Pon3Z9w
04.01.2022 After a 2 year legal battle with the backing of his union, the AWU, Scott Tracey has been awarded compensation of over $200k and reinstated to his job. There i...s no way I could have done this on my own. Going up against the might of a company like BP without help and legal backing would have been impossible. I have to say a huge thanks to the Australian Workers Union and my legal team who have stood alongside me through this very lengthy legal case and my fellow AWU members who helped support me financially while I was unemployed. It really does pay to be a member of a Union. Scotts boss didnt have a sense of humour. Does yours? Make sure you have support if something happens at work. 04.01.2022 Ballarat Trades Hall has received a Creative Victoria grant to purchase audio and lighting systems to continue to support our hybrid live audience and live str...eaming during the upcoming recovery phase and to be able to offer our loyal audience an even greater audio and visual experience once we can have you all back. Most importantly we can continue to support and encourage our local artists and musicians with an industry leading performance space, they have been doing it very tough. We cannot thank Creative Victoria, the Andrews State Government and our wonderful local State Labor MPs Juliana Addison MP Jaala Pulford MP Michaela Settle MP enough, this support will mean so much for our arts and music community. 04.01.2022 It's time to #MakeAmazonPay! We have been visiting the Amazon Fulfilment Centre in Dandenong South to talk to workers about their pay and conditions. Unfortunat...ely, many workers have been nervous to talk to SDA Organisers, as there are always company representatives watching when the union visits. With this in mind, we have planned an online webinar for Amazon workers. Anyone can attend anonymously, so no one who goes to the meeting will be able to see who else is there. This webinar is running tonight. You can register here: https://bit.ly/AnonymousWebinars We encourage all Amazon workers to attend the session to learn more about their rights at work. #UnitedAndStrong
03.01.2022 Manufacturing workers at Airstep have taken industrial action today in response to being offered a 0% pay increase, despite not having had a pay increase in 2 y...ears. Airstep has relied on their workers to keep their production lines running overtime during the COVID-19 pandemic. Workers have risked their health and safety to turn profits for the company and in return are being treated with disrespect. Enough is enough, workers are prepared to do what it takes to fight for a fair pay offer. Australian Unions Victorian Trades Hall Council
01.01.2022 Pollies Pledge! Twenty-three Queensland Labor MPs recently signed a pledge to keep public services in public hands under the watchful eye of United Workers Unio...n representatives from a range of occupations including teacher aides, school cleaners, ambulance officers and health workers. As Queensland heads into a state election, many of our members remember all too painfully how, on this day 8 years ago, the last LNP State Government passed a budget that saw more than 14,000 public servants sacked. Pictured here are UWU members Nick (Ambulance Officer) Julie (Teacher Aide) Yolanda (School Cleaner) and Bec (Radiographer) with the MPs who signed the pledge outside Qld Parliament. The pledge read: "I pledge to oppose outsourcing of frontline health, education and ambulance services. I pledge to fight for all frontline ambulance, health and education workers to remain directly employed by the Queensland Government."
01.01.2022 How about instead of unti-lookdown protests we protest the government for properly trained, proper staff to patent ratios, and proper PPE. Across all health car...e areas. These include Hospitals, Disability, and Aged Care. Also, real pay rates so people only need to have one job preventing cross facility infections. See more
