25.01.2022 Mansfield on the Ned Kelly Touring Route. Mansfield was the base for police search operations and it was the murder of three Mansfield policemen at Stringybark Creek that put a price on Ned’s head along with the other three Kelly Gang members. Before becoming a bushranger, Ned worked in the area as a timber-getter after his release from prison in 1874.... Mansfield’s other significant claim to fame is as the location for filming of the 1982 feature film The Man from Snowy River, based on the Banjo Paterson poem of the same name. Today, Mansfield is a pretty and prosperous place with fabulous views across the Alpine ranges and plenty of rivers and lakes nearby. It attracts visitors all year round and is the gateway town to Mt Buller, Lake Eildon and the Alpine National Park. #nedkellytouringroute #mansfield #nedkelly

Displays include Ned’s cell, the gallows, a suit of armour worn at Glenrowan during the last stand and a plaster cast ‘death mask’, used at the time in the study of phrenology to predict criminal behaviour. 14.01.2022 CHILTERN ON THE NED KELLY TOURING ROUTE Many people believe that the warrant issued for Dan Kelly, which was written and signed here at the Chiltern Police Station on 5 April 1878, was a turning point for the Kelly family. This warrant caused police to attend the family home at Greta and harass their mother. Aside from the township’s wonderful historic buildings and nearby wineries, there are a number of scenic drives on the outskirts of Chiltern, many of which traverse the C...hiltern-Mount Pilot National Park. North-west of town is Donchi Hill Road, which leads to a scenic lookout over the surrounding plains and passes through areas of old mining sites. South of Chiltern, on the road to Beechworth, is the turnoff to Mount Pilot where impressive views can be enjoyed from the mountain’s peak. Image (via IG); @tommi_dldu

09.01.2022 JERILDERIE- ON THE NED KELLY TOURING ROUTE Home of the famous Jerilderie Letter, dictated to Joe Byrne by Ned Kelly. The township of Jerilderie was established in 1859. It is nestled on the banks of Australia’s longest creek, the Billabong Creek, and is located on the Newell Highway, the main inland route linking Melbourne and Brisbane. 08.01.2022 Fabulous recount of @tulstravels recent trip along he Ned Kelly Touring Route. "Having studied Ned Kelly in history at University, the Ned Kelly country tour was a must! Kelly spam coming through of Stringybark Creek (the Kelly Gang shootout with police), followed by the Last Stand where Ned Kelly was captured in Glenrowan (the Ned Kelly statue on display in the town of the last siege), and followed with pics from Ned Kelly’s places of residence in Greta and his birthplace in Beveridge. Absolutely incredible history and mesmerising parts of high country Victoria." Images all (via IG): @tulstravels

04.01.2022 Wangaratta and Beechworth getting a mention. "If you're passing through Beechworth, hit Beechworth Bakery for the lunch of champions: the signature Ned Kelly Pie, stuffed with steak, bacon, cheese and egg. You'll find "Australia's Greatest Bakery" in one of the beautiful historic buildings typical of this picturesque gold rush town. Room for dessert? We suggest the classic vanilla slice or one of its famous Beestings: a fluffy, filled bun spilling custard into your hands with each bite."

01.01.2022 Repost from The Bootmaker’s Shop : "Last week we had the pleasure of a visit from the great, great (and great) grandchildren of Robert King. Robert John King was the Bootmaker and Saddler who worked in the building in the 1870s. It was he who aided the police in recapturing Ned Kelly when he escaped the Benalla Courthouse across the road. The history of our shop is very important to us so it was a great treat to learn more about it. Our thanks go to Aislin and family for t...heir visit and filling in some gaps for us. Thank you to the Benalla Ensign for a great story. And to David, the owner of the building, who saved this wonderful little pocket of Benalla history." https://www.benallaensign.com.au//touching-history-family- #thebootmakersshop #benalla #nedkellytouringroute
