25.01.2022 In a dream, memories, myths and wild imagination weave together like threads in a tapestry. This music, like a dream, weaves different strands together on different levels of consciousness and, like a dream, declines to say exactly what it means. 'Dreaming' is my latest composition and is about to be released. This video adds to the music a film of mist oozing out of the forest of the Dandenong Ranges National Park. (It's not action-packed, I admit, but you might find it draws you in.) Soon I'll be posting 2 other videos based on the same music, with images that are partly the same and partly quite different (all will be explained!).

22.01.2022 Short excerpts from my music videos with an outline of the kinds of music I write: new classical music with roots in folk, world and early music; orchestral, choral, songs, solos, ensembles. "Serious and not so serious" reflects my view that, while classical music is often deeply emotional and expressive, it doesn't always have to be deadly serious - it can also be light-hearted and even humorous at times (as Bach, Mozart and other great composers demonstrated).

19.01.2022 This video uses my music imaginatively with scenes of manta rays drifting slowly through the ocean. The music is titled Lucid Dreaming, and in dreams the sea is often symbolic of the unconscious, so I think this is quite appropriate (the livelier opening music is from the finale of my clarinet concerto): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXcU73drIlE

19.01.2022 In a dream, memories, myths and wild imagination weave together like threads in a tapestry. My composition, 'Dreaming', like a dream, weaves different strands together on different levels - as does the imagery in this new video. ‘Dreaming’ is from my collection 'Climates of the Mind' (more info on my website: www.neilbucklandmusic.com). It’s based on a 2013 work ‘Lucid Dreaming’ (also on YouTube), but with the addition of an entirely new part for solo bassoon and many other changes it’s effectively a new composition. The forest mist was filmed in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Victoria, Australia. The dream imagery was inspired by illustrations in Jung’s ‘Man and His Symbols’; thanks also to Mané Basmadjian for helpful suggestions. https://youtu.be/HtPK7hg01A4

19.01.2022 I'm still working on a collection of orchestral pieces reflecting different moods and states of mind: Nostalgia, Reflecting, Joie de Vivre, Grief, Gratitude, Dreaming and Enthusiasm are all part of this. I've been calling the collection simply 'States of Mind', but have now decided that sounds a little too clinical. So from now on it will have a more poetic title: 'Climates of the Mind'. Most of the above pieces are available on YouTube, Apple Music/iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, D...eezer, Wangyiyun, Google Play Music, QQ Music, Kuwo and Kugou. Dreaming will join them any day now, and other pieces will soon be added - Nonchalance, Uncertainty, Happiness and Euphoria are nearing completion, and Melancholy, Regret and Anxiety are well under way. If you would like to hear some, Nostalgia, Enthusiasm and Reflecting can be heard in full on the Listen page of my website: www.neilbucklandmusic.com, and other pieces via my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsmYSTGze_sGZl358LSssOA See more

16.01.2022 www.posimus.com is a new website I’ve set up to share positive music, music that promotes mental health and well-being. I’ve been using music in my other career as a psychotherapist for some years now (in mindfulness and attention training, deep relaxation, art therapy, guided imagery). Before that I conducted community choirs and this also taught me a lot about how music promotes well-being. Posimus.com shares the music that I have found to be most powerfully and consisten...tly effective in calming, energizing, sparking creativity, arousing emotions, uplifting, stimulating the brain, or focusing attention mindfully on present experience. (The music for mindfulness page on the site includes an explanation of how to use music for mindfulness, and clear definitions of what mindfulness is.) Please feel free to visit the site, sample the music, and send feedback, either here or via the feedback form at the bottom of the About page.

16.01.2022 This song is magic - wish I had written it. This version is only available on an obscure CD with a mix of other, quite different music, and Clara's other songs are very different too, but this...

16.01.2022 Another part of my Concerto for Harpsichord or Piano, this time played on piano. The title is a phrase from Shakespeare's Macbeth. You can hear the whole concerto on YouTube, Apple Music/iTunes or Amazon.

15.01.2022 Dreamy bits from the first and so far only live performance of my Parables of Sunlight. I would like to have it performed and recorded by a good orchestra - can anyone help with this?#oboes #stringorchestra #lyricalmusic

14.01.2022 Antics of local bird life, with some high-spirited music from my piano concerto. (If the video is not very clear, it's clearer on YouTube: https://youtu.be/3ON1kpaqDJo)

12.01.2022 My latest composition, Serenity (part of the collection Climates of the Mind), is now available on YouTube and from Spotify, Amazon, Deezer and Wangyiyun (not yet Apple Music but they are a little slower than the others). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sam0EpCRBPU

10.01.2022 Angel musicians (artist unknown, looks to be 15th century). They are playing shawms, loud, raucous instruments that make a very unangelic sound - and, even more curiously, one angel appears to have bat's wings!

09.01.2022 My little guitar piece, Siciliano, is now available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Z2lLc6IIlxc

08.01.2022 Serenity is now a video: https://youtu.be/FUzbgsxgX6M

08.01.2022 ‘Nonchalance’ is the latest addition to my collection ‘Climates of the Mind’. Nonchalance means behaving in a calm and carefree manner despite an underlying sense of unease or worry. In this music I had in mind the idea of a person (represented by the solo bassoon) moving nonchalantly through a variety of different environments while also aware that they may not be quite as safe or predictable as they seem. The video recreates a trip to Sydney: waking up on a sunny morning i...n a nice old hotel on the North Shore, walking through local streets down to the ferry wharf (the day has clouded over now), taking the ferry across the harbour, past Kirribilli House, Luna Park, the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, to Circular Quay with a glimpse of Government House nestling like a lost castle in a corner of the Botanic Gardens then a quick stroll through Hyde Park, up Sydney Tower for the views and the weather turns nasty. But the storm blows over, so we carry on nonchalantly back to the Opera House and up the steps for a general look around. The gulls watch on and so do strange, is that a pair of Buddhist monks sitting by the harbour? (I'm not making this up; I took the photo and I still don't know.) There is an ambivalence in both the music and the images that reflects my feelings about Sydney, the place of my birth, but I can’t deny it’s a very attractive city. The music in the video is only the first half of Nonchalance; the full piece is not yet published. If you would like to hear the remainder, please contact me. See more

06.01.2022 'Music is a hidden arithmetic exercise of the soul, which does not know that it is counting.' Leibniz 'When all is said and done, we can never rise above fantasy. ... All the works of man have their origin in creative imagination. What right, then, have we to disparage fantasy? The creative activity of imagination frees man... and raises him to the status of one who plays. As Schiller says, man is completely human only when he is at play. - Carl Jung, "The Aims of Psychotherapy (1931)

04.01.2022 This is what the home page of the new website looks like (for some reason the link in my previous post only brings up a bit of it). "Positive music" doesn't mean it's all happy clappy "have a good time" stuff, it just means it's music that has a positive effect on mental health (so it actually covers a wide range of different emotions, as you can see/hear on the Music and Emotion page). The Calming Music is calming but not soporific - it has enough interesting content to eng...age the attention and keep you awake as your body de-stresses. The Energizing Music stimulates the mind as well as engaging the body with its rhythms etc. The Music for Mindfulness is music I have tried with many people and found to be a very good focus for learning to control what you pay attention to. The other pages on the site are self-explanatory, but please ask if you'd like to know more about any of it (the About page gives a lot more background). https://www.posimus.com/home See more

02.01.2022 My latest composition, Nonchalance, is now available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Deezer and QQ Music. The image on YouTube is just a still picture, but I’m making a video that I hope to post soon.

01.01.2022 Two more pieces finished in my collection 'Climates of the Mind': Nonchalance and Uncertainty. I've had fun making this video of Uncertainty (as I suspect Paul Klee did too when he was creating some of this art). More on Climates of the Mind, with sound samples, here: https://bucklandmusic.com.au/orchestral-music/
