18.01.2022 This 1925 film by missionary Norbert Weber intricately documents daily life of Koreans. Based on his journals from 1902-1930, Norbert follows the plight of Chri...stian potters as they escape persecution. He writes, The pottery skills that they, dispossessed of goods and chattels, took with them, granted them some safety during the persecutions. They could, when they believed themselves threatened at a village, move away inconspicuously again, ‘because there is better clay, more firewood at a different village.’ In Weber’s journals he also details life of the potters in the village, the entire village of 150 souls is organized and works together equally as a single family. We step through a door, scarcely one and a half meters high, into a sparsely illuminated potter’s cottage, where right next to the door a potter sits in front of his wheel. This wheel has been sunk into a hole in the floor, so that it is flush with the surface of the clay floor. Norbert Weber’s footage was stored in a German Monastery. The Nazi government attempted to confiscate it because of its potential pro-Korean slant after their ally Japan occupied the Korean Peninsula. Luckily a monk was able to hide it behind a stone wall in the basement before he died in the war. The film was rediscovered in 1975 during a renovation of the monastery. Information gathered from Times Past in Korea: An Illustrated Collection of Encounters, Events, Customs and Daily Life Recorded by Foreign Visitors by Martin Uden. 04.01.2022 The Raku kiln has been tweeked with some old 1.5 inch Carmichael aspirators. The affect is like putting a V8 engine in a lawnmower. I can and do fire porcelain in it. This Raku lustre pot is fresh out of the kiln.
