23.01.2022 I thought that I would indulge in a little family history as a brief reprieve from my urban crusades. This grainy photo was taken in 1912 on the railway line between Geraldton & Sandstone in mid-west Western Australia. My swashbuckling grandfather is the one on the right without his shirt on in the mid-west sun. A brave Scotsman indeed! (Interestingly, he never had any issues with skin cancer, unlike my father). My grandfather spent a few years working as a fettler while ba...sed in Paynesville. He was one of five maintaining the railway line at the time, with this photo captioned 225 mile gang 115 degrees. 21.01.2022 A great event last night held by @designfreo titled Old Bridge / New Bridge on the topic of the proposed replacement of Freo bridge. Good background information provided by the speakers and relevant questions and statements from the audience. Like the replacement bridge in Swanbourne, the Freo replacement bridge triggers many urban design issues that should be resolved through a holistic design process that is led by designers. Instead we see a State Government desperate to... fast track projects by cutting out the most important stage of all; the design stage. All of these replacement bridge projects are being led by Main Roads WA (MRWA), who as Anthony Duckworth stayed, are very good at what they do, that being keeping our roads working. But having MRWA lead these projects where urban design needs to take place prior to the specifics of road design is simply ludicrous. It is like going straight to a builder and asking them to design your house . . . . . hold on a minute, that is exactly what the people of Perth do! Well it is simply dumb at a domestic level but plain crazy at State Government level. There are wonderful opportunities for Freo as there are for Swanbourne with design led urban design solutions leading the way prior to the specifics of a bridge being designed. We need our state government ministers to wake up to their opportunities to deliver infrastructure that has wide benefits along with the solving the specifics of the infrastructure. 19.01.2022 Another old University folio find was my award of second placed design (while in third year of a whole school of architecture competition) for a holiday house on Molloy Island. The jury stated, Neil Cownies second place-winning entrant was one of many compact designs. The use of glass, the timber decks and simplicity of this design make it one of the best. I remember designing the house to sit like an island in the thick bush, with surrounding raised timber decks leadin...g to the building allowing the vegetation of the bush to remain in place. 13.01.2022 That bull is at it again. The Public Transport Authority (PTA) is responsible for the strip of land that runs along the Midland to Fremantle train line. Fenced off with chain wire fencing on either side of the tracks, this land is like a time capsule of a time before European occupation. The remnant plant life between the fences is what is left of the original bush. With Zamia palms, grass trees, banksias and many other species present, these plants provide us with a connecti...on to a time when it was Noongar culture presiding over the land. So with my own master plan and built form for the Swanbourne precinct, I draw upon this remnant plant life as inspiration for reflecting the significance of this place. With the plant life being potentially over 200 years old, it needs to be treated with significantly more respect than shown for it by the PTA in their METRONET works. Time to let our state ministers know that we want design led new infrastructure. 04.01.2022 I rediscovered my old A1 sized folio today, all sorts of memories contained within. Who remembers this building? This was the fifth year architecture studio at UWA. A building that had been temporary accommodation for the faculty of architecture for 25 years. I was lucky enough to be one of the very last years to enjoy the antiquated old building which we made our own way into the wee hours of the morning on many a night. Attending studio was not only so much fun, but a melti...ng pot of shared ideas where we all learnt from one another. The balustrade bench seat in the foreground ensures views to the garden and Swan River beyond. The glass roof with an automated fabric awning and Wisteria vine overhead allow full north facing winter sun access and provide summer shade. Glass sliding doors on both sides of the terrace slide back into the walls to seamlessly connect the interior with the terrace. The exteri...or stone walls are also found internally within the house thereby blurring the visual boundary of internal and external spaces. So we resolved to combine an open balustrade in the form of a bench seat that allows a view through the balustrade. 02.01.2022 Received this pamphlet in the post this morning from METRONET, where do I start! Firstly, the map is so difficult to orientate, even for someone that looks at drawings every day. Secondly, the new underpass is to be constructed in a location with zero foot traffic demand. This is ridiculous from the Public Transport Authority (PTA), you guys must be kidding or you simply turn up to work each day and dont give a shit and just keep your heads in the sand. Yet another completel...y wasteful expenditure on infrastructure by our state government due to the result of non-design led infrastructure. With high levels of foot traffic (and increasing numbers of pedestrians) in the existing level crossing locations due to the Claremont football oval development and higher density housing to the north of the line, the appropriate point of connection across the train line is exceedingly obvious. Also look at where it delivers you on the south side, no where! Sure, with the train line being higher here it was easier to engineer an underpass, but the easy way out delivers a useless connection for community. Time to wake up our state government elected members to their own organizations such as the PTA. Demand design led solutions for new infrastructure for solid investment in the future of our state.
