24.01.2022 I commend the immense courage of Evan Rachel Wood and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for speaking up about their experiences with sexual assault this week and I am so pleased to see that #MeToo hasn’t faded out or been silenced like the many voices that have through intimidation or litigation. We still need it too much. This incredible show of vulnerability, honesty and transparency is not only extremely comforting to me as someone who has been through the trauma that a #metoo exp...erience brings, but it is the new wave of leadership we have been starving for. This is the kind of person I want to see in top positions within communities and companies; as the leader of a country. This is true leadership. It’s time for the old guard (many of whom have benefitted from a system that silences) to move on. #leadership

24.01.2022 These words should never be tolerated, neither should any actions that are complicit in supporting someone thinking these words are OK. While I commend the swift and decisive action that saw Somyurek booted this week, I wonder if the corruption had not have been found or exposed, would these words alone have been enough to encourage such a response? We should see the same condemnation and swift action in response to this behaviour even when it isn't coupled with corruption o...r scandal, and we shouldn't just expect it from our leadership, we should expect it from ourselves, in our workplaces and social dealings. We cannot act like we're shocked that this kind of culture exists in our leadership. Somyurek is but one of many people who hold this sense of entitlement because it is still tolerated in all levels of leadership. These words and the behaviours that generally go alongside these words exist and in some cases are encouraged in our workplaces and in local leadership. This type of misogyny is bred by a culture of acceptance. This acceptance occurs every day that we see or hear this kind of behaviour or worse, and we do nothing. Silence in the face of it, walking by it, laughing along with it or pretending we didn't know about it, hear it or see it, are all actions that make us complicit in it continuing to be a problem.

23.01.2022 The greatest barrier to courageous leadership is armour, and that armour gets in the way of us being human, of us caring, of us expressing empathy and compassion. To be daring is to lean into vulnerability. - Brené Brown.

22.01.2022 It’s time for these predators to feel fear about being called out for their despicable behaviour, rather than their victims feeling fear about speaking up. It’s time for these men to have to watch their reputations and worry about their careers, rather than the women who call them out for their entitled and vial behaviour. It’s time for those men and women who are complicit enablers of this behaviour to feel the heat of choosing personal agenda over ethics.... It’s time to say ‘no more’, because this happens everywhere, everyday and it and the behaviours of people who stand by and enable it destroys human beings. It suggests women are expendable and worthless; it disintegrates our self-worth and it changes us forever. For some that means becoming a shell of themselves, for others it means a fight - either way, it is a hideous violation of human rights and enough is enough. I hope to see more responses like this in time. Change is coming.

21.01.2022 Like a number of people, I’ve been mulling over yesterday’s press conference with Daniel Andrews. Like many of my industry colleagues, I have been battling with my feelings about it, as someone who has worked in or with the media for the better part of 15 years. In the changing landscape of journalism we are lucky to still see the absolute standouts, those true journalists who work tirelessly, in some instances literally putting their lives on the line to get the truth. They ...hold government and the powerful accountable. They research, investigate, probe and sometimes risk it all against Australia’s crippling defamation laws and the constant political pawning of the media, to make sure we know the truth. However yesterday’s press conference with Andrews was not this kind of journalism. It was a sad example of our media democracy crumbling before our eyes. It was running around in circles, agenda fuelled questions and badgering until the answer they (or their boards) wanted to hear, was exhaustedly surrendered (it wasn’t which made it all the more counterproductive), and in all of this the journalists forgot their most important audience - us. If you’ve worked in or with the media, you understand the gruelling pressure these journalists are under; pressure that has only been exacerbated in recent years with the suffocation of freely owned press. What we witnessed yesterday was a televised example of the life of journalists who are feeling the breath of politically agenda filled boards down their necks. It was a sad example of the goal posts being consistently moved on them, and the measurement of what constitutes ‘good journalism’ blurred by politically driven media mogul ownership and the struggle to keep your journalistic ethic and integrity, while also keeping your job. And we should all be deeply concerned about this.

21.01.2022 To me, this should have always been ‘normal’ and ‘acceptable’, it’s just now the structures that deemed it ‘unprofessional’ or ‘disruptive’ are starting to crumble under the pressure of a COVID world, and I for one am all for those structures crumbling. A person’s (let’s be honest it’s far more heavily weighted to women, but for the benefit of those men who are playing along) expert contribution to something, whether it be an interview like here, a board position or an employ...ment situation should be measured by the skills they contribute. Their expert offering and their desire/passion to offer those skills are their value, not some manufactured facade, created by people who validate and measure another’s contribution on an image of themselves. The world is changing - diversity and inclusion, along with authenticity and humility are attributes we critically need in our workplaces, on our boards and in our media, to survive and evolve. This means not just meeting quotas and recruiting for optics, but truly understanding, accepting and valuing what this brings. Progress with it, or prepare to be left behind.

20.01.2022 With all the disgraceful decisions being made in Parliament this week (and consistently) about recognition of Australia’s Indigenous people, which closely followed the Four Corners reveal of how our Government view and treat women, here’s some real leadership being shown by some of Australia’s Indigenous women. Turning to our elected officials for any show of actual leadership is proving to teach us nothing worthy, but there is hope in the people. Always Was, Always Will Be.... #NAIDOC2020

20.01.2022 This is a factual, knowledgeable and beautifully sarcastic piece about the ‘liberty warriors’ who continue to accost people who haven’t made the rules, let alone want to hear rants on why they cannot ‘enforce them’. Little takeaway, if you’re not going to read the article unless it’s an anti-mask wearing script... Maybe do your research before stomping your foot about human rights, legal grounds that don’t exist and comparing your right not to wear a mask with genocide. ... **Also please don’t use the women’s equality movement to try to enhance your bullying and harassment of people who are just trying to do their jobs. Some of us are part of this movement for legitimate reasons like wage disparity, family violence, sexual harassment/assault and the myriad of ACTUAL systemic issues of inequality and discrimination we face every day and you using this to further your antagonistic agenda is diluting the message.

20.01.2022 If you’re in Ballarat next week, please take some time to visit Kittelty's, grab one last coffee and thank the amazing Sara and her team for the 4 1/2 years of joy they brought to Lydiard Street. Our little family will miss the smiles, coffees and hot choccies, but we know that whatever they do next will be amazing.

18.01.2022 This articulate and considered speech from AOC is further emphasis that a ‘woman’s place’ is in leadership. What was done to her only further emphasises that some men are so terrified they are losing relevance and that their mediocrity is about to bite them in the arse, that all they have left to resort to is violence. They will not win. Keep going out there and being brilliant women of the world.

18.01.2022 What do you get when you combine one of the world’s most incredible leaders (if you’re about to comment with some boring AF mysonisitic view on this, spare us all the boredom) with one of my favourite movies ever (also not interested in whether or not you think Love Actually is shit, you will never change my mind)? You get beauty from the internet that’s what! Happy Friday people.

17.01.2022 Are you safe at home? Seems like a simple question, but it isn’t simple for everyone to answer, and it’s incredibly important for everyone in our community to know when and how to ask. Well done to everyone involved with this extremely important community message: ... 17.01.2022 Remember that?

16.01.2022 Tonight’s Four Corners story on sexism in Federal Government and certain government ministers’ conduct would have been insightful for some, for others it was a painful reminder of their own personal experience. While tonight’s story focused on federal politicians in Liberal Government, let’s not make the mistake of thinking this doesn’t exist elsewhere in Government. Because it damn well does. This toxic acceptance of sexism & misconduct doesn’t just exist in the Canberra bu...bble, it is far further reaching, and when it starts at the top, it then has the capacity and allowance to filter down to a state, departmental & funding level, and it becomes accepted behaviour by both sides of Government. It festers, creating a turn a blind eye to protect agenda culture and it ruins careers and lives of the women who suffer at the hands of both the behaviour and the subsequent silence from those who should be condemning it. #4corners See more

15.01.2022 I'm chuffed pretty much every day that I get to work with the incredible women of Lacey & Co. The Integrity Group. I recently got even more chuffed (is that a thing) when we were offered the opportunity to tell our story and share our vision to make workplaces safer with another cool woman, Steph at SmartCompany. The time for change is now and the responsibility belongs to employers to be part of that change. #workplaceculture #whistleblowing #diversityequityinclusion #sexualharassment

13.01.2022 This week Lacey & Co. The Integrity Group will sit down with the International Bar Association and Whispli to discuss all things '#Metoo, Us Too And How We All Need To Respond To Workplace Bullying And Sexual Harassment.' This will be a brilliant and long-overdue discussion about harassment in the legal profession and beyond. Register your place here: https://bit.ly/2Xpe5f4

13.01.2022 While Victorians have been keeping our eyes on COVID, this has also been happening. No one explains why the proposed new Bill is problematic quite like Michael Bradley (so I’ll leave you to read it), but what I can say is the resounding outcome will be the suppression of important information that has in recent times educated the public; which has finally began to change the conversation about violence against women. We have come a distance, but still have so far to go and ...this Bill stands to potentially set us back again. #LetUsSpeak

10.01.2022 For all those playing along in Australia. - Dangerous ideologies masked by marketing slogans about boosting economies - Cuts to institutions that develop creative or critical thinking... - Muzzling through economic duress of those who question said ideologies - The reallocation of stimulus packages to sectors that further those dangerous ideologies - Budget slashing that increases economic and social inequalities for women and vulnerable members of our society I am deeply concerned for our democracy and our future - you should be too.

10.01.2022 I love this clip from Ballarat Community Alliance. I love it because the faces are not the same faces we’ve seen pulling strings, playing politics or calling the shots - this is just a small number of the many diverse faces the real Ballarat is beginning to see. For many years I’ve held the belief that there are a number of people who are making true positive and progressive change in our region who you will seldom see plastered on posters, publicly speaking or claiming the ...limelight. These are people I have been privileged to meet through the diverse and progressive audience that make up Left of the Clique, people who are busy actively getting shit done to create better communities; people showing true leadership. Because leadership isn’t about your name being up in lights, it’s not about always being right, it’s not about holding a seat for the longest time, having the loudest voice or winning a popularity contest, it’s not about what you say - but what you do. Thankfully, in just a few weeks we might see some of these kinds of people rise to positions of leadership and with this rise, we may start to see positive change and development of diversity in leadership in our region, but we won’t see it unless you make an educated vote. So this Council election, make sure you get to know your candidates, find out what they stand for and look at what they’ve done, not what they say they’re going to do - because that is what they will do for you if elected. #BallaratVotes

06.01.2022 Thank you for being a leading voice for gender equality, women's interests, and civil rights and liberties until the day you died. Thank you for devoting your life to the things you care about, the things that mattered, and for bringing others with you on the journey. People of this type of conviction are rare diamonds in this rough and rocky world. RIP RBG.

06.01.2022 A reminder of what leadership could look like for us again, one day...

05.01.2022 I value this subtle activism so much. Well done to the sassy librarian, actions really do sometimes speak so much louder than words.

05.01.2022 If you’re more concerned about your human right not to wear a mask than you are about another’s right to survive, then you really need to take a look at yourself. Better still, pick up a book about what it means to have human rights, because those rights have never come without responsibility and they are rights that should be afforded to all humans, not just to you.

05.01.2022 And so, I once again say to you... The only way, we are going to change this, is by taking up space. Take up space on committees, in workplaces & on boards, elbow your way in to represent women & while you’re there, elbow a little more to make a space for a woman from a more marginalised group of the community to step in & have her voice heard, & when you are there speak. Speak your mind, speak your truths, confidently mention that you’re not finished when you’re interrupted;... bring empathy & kindness to your views & decisions; & every now & then bring discomfort to the conversation through difference of opinion & do it in any way you feel represents you & your values. Because Difference of view is not dangerous; Softness should never mean silence; Values should always guide you; Kindness should not be seen as weakness; Taking up space but also ensuring that you share it, is the difference between male and female leadership; Empathy is strength; Listening is our greatest power; Storytelling creates understanding; and Understanding will be part of closing the gap on inequality for all. #IWD2021

03.01.2022 Grace Tame didn’t mess about today in her National Press Club address and I was in awe. #auspol #leadership

03.01.2022 With the recent events in local government here in Ballarat, last night’s breaking news about corruption in state politics and the current state of international leadership, I sadly feel like this piece I wrote for the Lacey & Co. The Integrity Group blog is rather relevant once again. #leadership

02.01.2022 Of course I love a well meaning campaign that celebrates kindness and womanhood, but I think this is yet another example of our need to dig deeper before we share content on social media. While I feel very lucky to be surrounded by incredible women and humbled to have been nominated by many of those women to become part of the black and white photo ‘challenge’, I worry that this campaign has unintentionally silenced the very important message of the original campaign. This ca...mpaign originated just this month in Turkey in protest of Turkey’s trivialisation of violence against women and to expose the horrific murder of Pinar Gültekin. In solidarity with our Turkish sisters, this campaign could have gone viral in Australia for the same reasons, to honour the many Australian women who have died at the hands of violent men, and to reiterate the very real, very serious, cultural issues we have here in our own backyard. What the black and white photo challenge also highlights is how quickly we are prepared to share social media content, without understanding its origins or its intentions. This has become increasingly evident with the spread of misinformation about COVID and political propaganda. It’s dangerous and we make it all too easy for the creators of this misinformation when we share it or we dilute more serious messages and voices. If you read something on socials, go a little further and search it online, read other articles about the topic (those that fit your agenda and those that oppose your agenda), then give it a few days before you share it. Sometimes you’ll be glad that you didn’t or at least if you still do, you’ll know exactly what you’re endorsing. #TakeCareBeforeYouShare

01.01.2022 There’ll be more. The perpetrator didn’t just wake up one day and do this, he spent years getting away with harassment and misconduct, because people turn the other way. Time is up for any organisation or institution that thinks ignoring or covering up sexual misconduct is a solution. It’s time to change the culture. ... #IstandwithBrittanyHiggins
