20.01.2022 Video: SIMPLE MINDS LOVE SONG (Peel session audio) On this date in 1982, SIMPLE MINDS were in session on the John Peel Radio One show, (March 1st 1982). For t...he second of only two sessions the band recorded for John Peel, Simple Minds recorded four tracks: PROMISED YOU A MIRACLE / LOVE SONG / SONS AND FASCINATION / KING IS WHITE AND IN THE CROWD. LOVE SONG, single and track from fourth studio album ‘Sons and Fascination’, signified a shift for the band from underground experimentation to panoramic soundscapes and, ultimately, mainstream acceptance. Blending funk and art via the shiny new technologies available to them, ‘Love Song’ took the dazzling synth-funk sensibility of ‘I-Travel’ and gave it a pop sheen. With Derek Forbes’ signature syncopated bassline atop pulsating sequencers, ‘Love Song’ had an imposing sound it wasn’t quite yet stadium-filling times for Simple Minds but this tune had arena-shattering qualities written all over it. The band never sounded more biting, more imperative or more irresistible. LOVE SONG became Simple Mind's first single to enter the UK Top 50. In 1992, a remixed version of the song promoting the 'Glittering Prize 81/92' compilation hit the UK Top 10 reaching #6. The video here is the original promo for ‘Love Song’ edited, extending and dubbed with the audio from the Peel session take, one that includes an extended percussive intro.
