25.01.2022 It was so wet Saturday morning, we got absolutely drenched. Katie and I were a bit squishy in the feva, and I believe I left half my hair in the vang, but it was so much fun. I love racing in a fleet of the same class as you can really see what you're doing right and wrong by comparing with the other boats. Best part was probably being allowed to write the junior race report... I tried really hard to not be mean to people .
23.01.2022 Now that I'm the Rear Commodore of Leven Yacht Club, I'm in charge of events. Throwing myself into an opening day event with politicians getting involved and hopefully lots of community members coming down for a watch. Can't wait! https://facebook.com/events/s/opening-day/751874958931922/?ti=as
23.01.2022 Two weekends ago I decided to head over to Deviot Sailing Club to compete in their high-performance regatta which, looking back, I am unsure why I associated the words high performance with myself and Petri. I did, however, and after spending the week beforehand umming and ahhing, checking the forecast and praying my trampoline would arrive back from being repaired from where I had thoughtlessly sat through the weekend before, I loaded up my boat and courage and headed ove...Continue reading
23.01.2022 So lockdown continues and is cruelly stopping me sailingat least, that’s what I like to tell myself. In truth, what stops me is that I am an incompetent sailor who can’t right her boat when it flips, but I don’t think that is a healthy thought for me to dwell on. Lack of sailing though makes me look at a lot of photos to keep my spirits high and as I was scrolling through unflattering photo after unflattering photo, I came across the dozens of photos I took from the rescue ...Continue reading
23.01.2022 I have spent the last few weeks replacing the diamond wires in my mast and sealing it all up. The wires were supposedly a simple task, one that could be completed in an hour or two by Walker if I could get the mast to him, and that had been the plan before lockdown was announced. Unable to shift from my postcode non-essentially, I found that I had extra time on my hands and a still badly wired mast. The diamond wires are set on the mast to give tension to it in the right p...Continue reading
21.01.2022 I was so excited for Saturday's race, forecasters were promising ten knots of wind with gusts of thirty and it was my first time racing Petri alone. As it ended up though, three knots gusting six was what lay in store for us, and the outgoing tide was less than favourable. Twice my rudders fell prey to the siren calls of the marker, becoming entangled with the tentacles of rope beneath the surface, only one incident of which I performed the penalty turn for. After the race th...e tide decided to take me on a merry jig down the river and while the rescue boat and all other crews packed up for the day, I sat on my boat and idly wondered when someone - anyone - would notice that I was traveling backward and perhaps find it in their heart to rescue me. Eventually, after being overlooked by my own, the Good Samaritan from Mersey yacht club swam out to get me then swam me and my boat back in (I had been struck down with stomach pain since the last few minutes of the race and had no intention of exerting any energy ). Over all though, it was a good day and I am pleased to report that I had Petri balanced perfectly for almost all the race, a little golden ray of happiness I am holding onto within the glaring light of having been disqualified. 15.01.2022 I love this clip so much...the little legs kicking as she flies through the air. It's honestly gold!
13.01.2022 Love this so much!
11.01.2022 Sailing goals definitely! Steering without rudders is done be moving the sail's centre of effort behind or in front of the boat's pivot point by pulling it in or letting it out, therefore changing whether the boat naturally wants to turn toward or away from the wind. Weight placement is also a huge contributor! Definitely something I want to master one day.
10.01.2022 It was last November that I realised Petrified was broken. Broken quite badly at that: old damage had resurfaced and was causing the starboard hull to break away from the beam. It was structural, it was messy and, most importantly, it was accessible with only one hand. I was going to need to build a bulkhead under the beam to spread the load down into the hulls and, because we had thoughtlessly epoxied the decks back on when we last had them off, it was going to need to b...Continue reading
09.01.2022 Today is our first anniversary! It was a year ago today that Petri first settled on Tasmanian soil after I had her brought over from the mainland. It was a hugely exciting day for me and the beginning of a very tight learning curve that sometimes just felt like it was curving around into circles But I wouldn't have given up this past year of boat repairs, sailing and mishaps for anything!
08.01.2022 It was a long weekend here on the north-west coast of Tassie and my family and I headed off to a sailing regatta down at St Helens. Most of the fam went down in the cruiser which was towing Halcyon, our status 580, while Beth and I towed Petri down in my car. The weekend began brilliantly when I missed a turn-off, took the next side road to make a turn, thoughtlessly disregarding important factors such as its length, narrowness and number of potholes. We ended up with the ...Continue reading
07.01.2022 With the diamond wires fixed and the mast sealed up again, I have been able to get out on Petri a number of times. These sails have taken place mostly with little wind and many snacks, where we all pile on and eat, jump off again, then have competitions on who can remount the boat while displaying the least amount of rolls in our very unkind wetsuits. This afternoon’s sail, however, was quite different. The tide was coming in extremely quickly and in the river there was litt...Continue reading
06.01.2022 So the season has been over for less than a week and already the withdrawal is setting in. Wednesday night I flicked through old photos, Thursday I checked Meteye to see what the conditions would have been like for sailing and by Friday my eyes were beginning to randomly water up. Windsurfing! I declared Saturday morning. That’s what’ll fix me! There were only a few small problems with this new cure for sailing withdrawal: I don’t have a windsurfer and I don’t know how t...Continue reading
05.01.2022 I still haven’t been for my sail to Penguin, in fact, I’ve hardly been sailing at all. Last time we attempted the voyage was on an ill-fated day some weeks ago with grey skies and an evil little breeze which was deceptively stronger than was apparent in the rigging yard. I had already spent almost an hour rigging my boat, a lot of that time spent heaving my sail up the mast, (a job that takes me a far beyond reasonable amount of time), and was finally ready to hit the water w...Continue reading
05.01.2022 The event I planned for my yacht club was very successful considering the weather! It was great fun for everyone, although I was informed that I was VERY BOSSY trying to get things set up and I may have stained the Commodore's white shirt green sending him up a tree to tie off my bunting... I'm sure they've all forgiven me though...
05.01.2022 It has been a couple of weeks since I last went sailing and it was beginning to show in an increasingly protuberant lower lip and heavy thumping as I stomped around the house. The weekend before I had had grand plans of sailing with a mate up the coast some 15km to Penguin, where I was going to be shown where it was safe to pull up on the beach, and I had been immensely excited about it. Coffee at the local café had been the idea and, with hopes pinned on such a brilliant m...Continue reading
01.01.2022 It was such a great weekend!
01.01.2022 It was an absolutely epic weekend! Ends up I sailed well enough to not get any mishaps mentioned in the race report, so that's good!
