21.01.2022 Arts North West has another excellent professional develop opportunity for creatives. Pitching is a necessary part of professional creative practice, whether it’s discussing an idea for a work, talking to funding bodies about a project, or participating in a competitive pitch process or competition. It’s fraught with legal and marketing challenges and needs to be approached in a thoughtful and strategic way.

10.01.2022 ‘Lisa’s Lake’ by Robert Owen is this week’s #curatorspick from the COVENTRY exhibition. Robert Owen’s art practice encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, photography and major public commissions. Throughout his work there is an overarching interest in light, colour and space. He studied sculpture under Lyndon Dadswell at the National Art School in Sydney and after graduating with honours, lived in Greece (196366) and London until 1975 after which he returned to Sydn...ey. In 1988, he moved to Melbourne where he settled. His time in Greece had a substantial impact of his work and ‘Lisa’s Lake’ is a piece that shows its influence. At the time, there were scientific expeditions to view a solar eclipse and Owen became interested in the spectral effects of the sun’s rays through the atmosphere which acted like a prism. Owen was reminded of the physics of colour he had studied at art school and the experience triggered a fascination with light and refraction. During his time on the Greek island of Hydra, Owen fell in with the expat community which also included Australian writers Charmian Clift and George Johnston, Canadian poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen and American poet Jack Hirschman. While in London, his circle expanded to include British constructivists Anthony Hill, John Ernest and Gillian Wise, who advocated a return to rational geometry in their work. ‘Lisa’s Lake’ embodies a melding of these two influences. The chrome-plated aluminium grid-like structure is constructivist in nature and the small cubes within contain spectral bands of colour that move and undulate depending on the light source and viewing position. It is a key work by Robert Owen and we are so very lucky to have it in the collection and exhibition. Robert Owen, ‘Lisa’s Lake’ 1972, mixed media. Gift of Chandler Coventry, 1979. 09.01.2022 Christopher Hodges reviewed our recent exhibition COVENTRY in Art Monthly Australasia. "Coventry was undoubtedly eclectic in his taste he wasn’t afraid to collect bold abstraction, figurative and narrative works simultaneously but he had an eye, and it was this element that gave the show its real sense of energy and style."

09.01.2022 ArtsHub's Gina Fairley gives 'Streeton' five stars! "Streeton features more than 150 paintings, drawings and watercolours spanning six decades, and drawn from 42 public and private collections, with some artworks not exhibited for more than 100 years it is every bit worthy of the local blockbuster title." NERAM has loaned the Gallery of NSW seven artworks from the Howard Hinton Collection for this wonderful exhibition. If you are in Sydney we suggest a visit.

06.01.2022 The final COVENTRY exhibition #curatorspick is, fittingly, ‘The Last Portrait of Chandler Coventry’ by Angus Nivison. Walcha artist Angus Nivison knew Chandler Coventry for most of his life and painted his portrait three times. This portrait was painted when Channy was very ill and he passed away before it was completed. This is Nivison’s favourite of the three portraits he painted, and functions as a eulogy of sorts. Despite the sombre mood and a sense of the world closing ...in, the strength of character and sheer determination of the man is present. This portrait had never been shown prior to this exhibition and it has been displayed alongside the other two portraits painted by Nivison. You can read more about Nivison’s portraits of Channy in the COVENTRY exhibition catalogue available to purchase from the NERAM shop and online. It was a privilege and an honour to hang this work in the exhibition. COVENTRY closes on Sunday 18 October. Angus Nivison ‘Last Portrait of Chandler Coventry’ 1999, oil on canvas, 206x92cm.
