25.01.2022 More dad related photos, partly inspired by my nephew James Sanders memories. First one was August 1987 when the Soviet basketball team toured Australia and a g...roup of Lithuanians, including myself, my father, my sister and my mother met Sarunas Marciulionis and Valdemaras Chomicius at Melbourne Airport. It was historic for many reasons, but mainly because the Lithuanian champions met up with a former Lithuanian champion, Leonas Baltrunas, who was part of the pre-war Lithuanian team which won the European title. Of course, the following year after this photo Marciulionis and Chomicius were part of the Soviet team that won Gold at the Seoul Olympics, and four years after that they won bronze in Barcelona for a newly-independent Lithuania as The Other Dream Team Second photo is my dad with his grandsons James and Paul at Mt Buller, Victoria
25.01.2022 Looking good, Buller.
25.01.2022 Druskininkai Snow Arena the only winter activities complex in the Baltic countries that works all year round. Three skiing slopes and snowboarding park are arranged in the area of 8 hectares. Snow is made by using PowderStar Series technology. Water and air are the only ingredients of the snow, no chemical or bacteriological additives are used, so our snow is 100% natural. The snow making system in Snow Arena is fully automatic; it can be controlled and managed remotely. The technology of PowderStar Series gives us opportunity to produce the snow of highest quality all year round. http://www.snowarena.lt/lt/Naujienos

14.01.2022 A QUARTER of a century ago this month, my family and I lost a great man in our life - Jonas Masanauskas. Below is a short biography of my father that was given ...out during a recent family event to commemorate his life and passing. Jonas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, on March 27, 1926, son of Ksaveras and Petronele Masanauskas. He attended the Sanciai school not far from his home in Vaidoto St and later went to the Ausros Boys’ School in central Kaunas. As a boy he enjoyed visiting the family homestead in Dievogala, near Kaunas, where the family spent most of the long summer holidays. Jonas was a good student who usually got top marks, which in Lithuania was a 5, decreasing to 1 for the worst mark. The Second World War brought great changes to Lithuania, including, of course, to Jonas’s family. His father Ksaveras, a colonel in the Lithuanian Army, was deported to Siberia by Soviet Communists in June 1941 when Jonas was only 15. He would never see his father again. During the German occupation Jonas undertook some underground activities with fellow students by publishing anti-German and pro-Lithuanian material. In early 1944, when he was barely 18, he decided to enlist in a Lithuanian defence force organised by the respected general Juozas Plechavicius. Unfortunately, the German occupiers wouldn’t allow that army to be independent, so it was disbanded and Jonas, with a friend, escaped from Lithuania ahead of the looming Soviet re-occupation. Jonas made his way through what was then the German territory of Konigsberg, East Prussia, and what is now the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. At some point he and his friend were captured by German troops. As I remember him telling me, they went naked through a special washing facility to rid their bodies of lice and at the other end German uniforms were waiting for them. He spent the rest of the war digging trenches in a Luftwaffe (airforce) division. At the end of the war and its aftermath, Jonas hooked up with other Lithuanian refugees and ended up in the northern German city of Lubeck. His sister, Maryte (Mary), who had fled Lithuania a bit earlier than Jonas, managed to track him down through the Lithuanian refugee grapevine and surprised him while he was resting in a dormitory in Lubeck. In 1946 Jonas migrated to Coventry, England, where he met Birute Jarutyte among other Lithuanian refugees who had settled there. They married in 1948 and Danute was born there in 1949. A few years later the family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where Maryte and her family had settled some years earlier. Jonas started working in factories and then become a builder after constructing a few houses with his brother-in-law Rom Sazenis. In 1959 Jonas, Birute and Danute welcomed John to their family. The Masanauskases first lived in Nunawading and then settled in Mitcham. The building business, which was co-managed by Birute, constructed many homes in the area, as well as several houses in upmarket suburbs such as Toorak, South Yarra and Brighton. Jonas was a very respected builder who worked with some of Melbourne’s top architects. He had a reputation for excellence and integrity. One of his great loves was skiing, and with some of his Lithuanian friends, he built the Neringa Ski Club at Mt Buller in the early 1960s and spent many happy times there socialising and improving the lodge. The club continues to this day. In the late 1970s, Jonas retired from the business and did what he had always wanted to do, but was unable to because of the war. He completed an arts degree at Monash University, majoring in history and Russian. John, who was also a Monash student, fondly remembers occasionally driving to uni with his dad, and they would sometimes catch up on campus for a coffee or a chat. Dana recalls helping her father edit his essays. Jonas was very proud of his grandchildren James and Paul he enjoyed bike riding with them and taking them on excursions. He also instilled in them an appreciation of opera. Jonas was a history and politics buff, who took great pleasure in passing on his knowledge and opinions to his children and grandchildren. I am only sorry he did not live to see my children Andy and Tom, as he would have loved looking after them and teaching them. During his retirement, Jonas did several things he loved such as editing Lithuanian language newspapers in London and Sydney, Europos Lietuvis and Musu Pastoge, and providing political commentary for the SBS Lithuanian program. He served as a director for the Lithuanian Credit Society Talka and was treasurer for the 6th World Lithuanian Youth Congress Organising Committee. The Congress was held in Australia in 1987-88 and Jonas attended it proudly. He was also instrumental in securing the visit of Lithuanian athletes to the World Lithuanian Sports Festival, held in Adelaide in 1988-89. This was the first time in the post-war period that Lithuanians from Lithuania were able to participate in such an event it was indeed an historic occasion. Jonas was a great Lithuanian patriot who tragically did not live to see his birthplace regain its independence. However, he was there in 1988 when Lithuanian symbols such as the national anthem and the national flag returned after more than 40 years of Communist oppression. In a sense, Lithuanians were already feeling free at that stage and the winds of major change were in the air. He witnessed that and was very proud of his country’s rebirth. I will never forget in 1988, when we were both in Lithuania, his reaction to the flying of the Lithuanian tricolour flag in a country church. He pointed out the flag to me as his eyes welled up with tears. I sincerely hope, that on the 25th anniversary of his passing, everyone associated with this marvellous man appreciates his talents and achievements and realises what they lost far too early. And to those, like my boys who never knew him. I hope you will want to learn more about him and strive in life as he did with such great success. Photos below, from left. Jonas with his father Ksaveras, sister Maryte and brother Kazys in Kaunas, Lithuania, 22 May, 1936.
