24.01.2022 If you're located outside Melbourne, how do you discuss lockdown-free life in a way that doesn't rub it in or cause offence? Are we experiencing an iso-gap in our communication - much like the generation gap that was often talked about when I was growing up? It was fascinating to chat about this with Patricia Karvelas on RN Drive last night.... https://www.abc.net.au//awkward-talking-to-people/12690816
24.01.2022 Being a great communicator on camera takes a special set of skills. After such a chaotic year of online communication, are you getting more comfortable communicating through the laptop or camera lens? Here are my key tips that I shared with the team at #Antwak recently, on how to #communicate effectively on screen. #confidence #influence #credibility
24.01.2022 A key part of building a strong #reputation is being clear on what you stand for and ensuring that comes across in everything you do. We can’t control what people say about us (wouldn’t that be nice?) - but we can #influence it. #communication #credibility

20.01.2022 As a leader, are you on top of issues that have the potential to become major #reputation problems - or do you find yourself constantly dealing with crises that could have been avoided? Emerging issues are like weeds. Pluck them out before they have a chance to grow. #credibility #influence

19.01.2022 Back in the learning zone this week, immersed in Aaron Sansoni's Sales Mastery program (virtual, of course!) We were reminded of how many fears we learn throughout our lives - like we've walked down a supermarket aisle and loaded our trolley up with them. Guilty as charged - how about you? "Life doesn't get easier the more successful you get - you just get better at it." A good refresher!... #SMV2020 #influence #credibility
18.01.2022 A huge shout-out to the unique talents of video master Julian Mather, who gave hours of his time to the Local Government Communication Professionals Network, showing us how to shoot and edit outstanding videos using only our smartphone. One participant described Julian as the "MacGyver of video" - revealing the secrets of using Blu Tack, rice or lentils to create a makeshift tripod that will keep your shots rock-solid. I know Julian is also hugely generous with giving away e...xpert tips on social media - he's worth checking out! #communication #influence #video

14.01.2022 Have you ever received an email and had to read it three times to understand the writer's point? Many people seem to think it's better to use ten words, when five will do the same job. There's a fear that if they use simple language, their work will be "dumbed down" and they won't sound credible. I don't know about you, but when I read complicated text, I don't consider the writer is being clever - I feel annoyed at having to work hard to get their message (that's if I even g...et to the end of it - can you relate?) To truly have credibility, focus on being clear. Use short words, sentences and paragraphs to keep your writing simple. Address your reader directly by using "you and "we" - imagine you're having a conversation with them and adopt that tone in your writing. Your reader will thank you for keeping it straightforward. And they just might understand what you're trying to tell them. #communication #credibility #influence
14.01.2022 Do you prepare for conversations the way you prepare for meetings or presentations? It can make the world of difference. #communication #influence... www.neryleast.com//93hhwewge4t4n8c-ehtpe-nj45d-7tgf8-yngmg See more
13.01.2022 If you're speaking English and your audience speaks only, say, German, unless you're an expert mime artist you're going to struggle to communicate. But have you experienced this same difficulty when you’re both speaking the same language? Avoid the trap of assuming your audience has the same thought process or communication style as you. #influence #credibility
12.01.2022 It was inspiring this week to read about the achievements of the COVID-19 Assessment Clinic team at Shellharbour Hospital, who've been named the NSW Nursing/Midwifery Team of the Year. With just a few days' notice, and with nurses seconded from all over the region, the group set up a well-oiled-machine of a clinic that conducted nearly 20,000 tests and set up outreach programs for vulnerable people. I loved the quote from the clinic leader when asked what she'd learned from ...the experience: "Nothing's insurmountable. People will surprise you and work cohesively if they've got a common goal." Thank you to this inspiring group and to all our health professionals for the incredible job you've done throughout 2020. https://www.illawarramercury.com.au//shellharbour-hospita/

11.01.2022 From what you've experienced this year, do you have a new relationship with change? Do you resist it or embrace it? Change can be invigorating and - as most of us can attest thanks to 2020 - it can also cause significant pain. A few years ago I had the privilege of interviewing international thought leaders on change for a book called "Implementing an Effective Change Management Strategy". Their advice included:... -To get on board, individuals need to see the point of the change and agree it’s better than the status quo -You can prepare the way for a change by "ripening the issue" in your organisation. (That's certainly harder when it's a pandemic and change is imposed from the outside!) -Individual behaviour embeds change. It happens one person at a time. I particularly liked the concept of "constant weeding"; continually making small adjustments to adapt to the ever-changing conditions around us. Moving with the changes, and being as flexible as we can, will help us perform at our peak when larger changes come into our lives, or workplaces. #credibility #reputation #influence

10.01.2022 It's been fascinating to read Michelle Obama's book "Becoming" - including her reflection that the intense public scrutiny during the 2008 election campaign felt like "having your soul x-rayed every day". Your organisation mightn't feel the spotlight burning quite as brightly as that, but you are, nonetheless, performing on a world stage every day. Any mis-step has the potential to go global in a heartbeat - and thanks to fake news, the stories don't even have to be true!... Is your leadership team ready to perform at their peak under such a powerful universal gaze? If you're scrambling to prepare once all eyeballs are turned on you, it's too late. -Learn to tell your authentic story, even under pressure -Know how to stand and deliver on camera, in a way that commands influence -Be able to address critics in a respectful way that builds trust If you'd like support in this area, don't hesitate to get in touch. #credibility #influence #communication
10.01.2022 Do you find your confidence waning when you’re about to go into a presentation or virtual meeting - or even a festive event where you don't know many people or a family function that has an air of tension? This one tip, that I shared with the team at #Antwak during the year, could change everything. #influence #credibility

10.01.2022 Do leaders in your organisation always perform at their best when they need to communicate under pressure - especially in the public eye? Leading in the spotlight takes specific skills - but every leader can learn to become more credible through confidence, clarity and connection. My process for helping leaders stand out and command #influence in the public spotlight has been honed through many years of experience, including working with some of Australia's most senior leader...s in very high-stakes situations. If you or your leadership team would find value in learning to connect powerfully with your audiences when you're under pressure, have a look at my Leading in the Spotlight video and don't hesitate to get in touch. #credibility #reputation #communication

06.01.2022 Having a fancy title doesn't mean people will automatically have confidence in your abilities. #Competence and #character are key traits of people that are most trusted by consumers. These are the two faces of #credibility that will help you to be a more influential communicator, regardless of your title.... #influence #communication
05.01.2022 With so many amazing Sydney Olympics stories being shared this week I want to add my own. It was a joy and privilege to be an announcer at the Sydney Hockey Stadium in 2000. I'd spent many years in radio and TV so was used to broadcasting to big audiences - but this was next level! l remember my first day, looking out at 20,000 people in the stands around me - and then at the names of the Australian and Polish men's team that I was about to introduce onto the pitch. Oh, those... Polish names - how their pronunciations kept me awake at night! When the fanfare sounded and my first words, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Games of the 27th Olympiad" rang out, the deafening roar that filled the air took my breath away. Talk about audience engagement - I've never experienced anything like it. What precious memories we have of those times! Twenty years on, the world is very different - but even in such a difficult year, we can still create memories that will make us smile two decades from now.
05.01.2022 Do you "tell" more than "ask" when you communicate? Try this shift and notice what happens. #credibility #influence #communication
04.01.2022 Is asking questions a natural part of your leadership style? Questions are a powerful way to bring out the best in others and avoid the leadership trap of solving everyone else's problems. #credibility #influence #communication
04.01.2022 Who's in your ecosystem? I'm not talking about your food chain - I mean those who can influence or be influenced by what you do. How are you making sure you create and maintain positive connections with them? #credibility #influence

04.01.2022 A huge congratulations to contentgroup on the success of the GovComms Festival - a massive virtual event that featured more than 100 hours of content generated by 165 speakers from 17 countries. I was privileged to be one of those presenters and thoroughly enjoyed leading a panel discussion with @Jo Scard and @Simon Holt on how governments at all levels can effectively communicate in regional areas given the shrinking media landscape. GovComms was the world’s first global eve...nt dedicated to the future of government communications, and part of the OECD's Government After Shock initiative. An undertaking of this size doesn't happen by accident - thank you to David Pembroke and everyone involved for making it a reality. #GovCommsFestival #GovAfterShock #media
03.01.2022 Whether you're already a leader or you aspire to be one, there are probably times when you don't communicate your point of view as clearly as you'd like to. Communicating with clarity is a hallmark of an effective leader. Being unclear results in confusion, frustration and wasted resources. To be clear, follow these steps:... 1. State your opinion, idea or desire. Obvious, huh? It sounds simple but it can trip you up. Can you say what you mean in a sentence or two? Imagine the person you're talking to is getting into a lift and the doors are closing, leaving you only a few seconds to call out your message - what is it? 2. Explain the thinking behind your point - the "why". Many people "tell", and expect others to agree. Maybe they want to, but they don't fully understand where you're coming from. State what you think, then why you think it. Make the "why" important to them. 3. Ask the others what they think. Yes, that's right - you're stating your piece but now it's time to get their views. Use words like, "That's how I see it - how about you?" or "Help me understand what this looks like for you." This is powerful and the results might surprise you. 4. Genuinely listen, using the ratio of 70% ears/30% mouth. Closing your mouth and opening your ears doesn't come naturally to a lot of us, me included! It's s a skill that can open up amazing opportunities, so it's well worth working on. Which of these steps are already a strength for you and which do you need to develop? Building your "muscle" across all four will transform the way you communicate. #credibility #influence
03.01.2022 In our reputation-driven economy, the currency of success is #credibility. Establishing yourself as credible and trustworthy requires action on two layers. Layer 1: Your digital persona If you haven't yet established a strong presence across targeted online platforms, you’re missing opportunities Focus on generating unique content that brings value to your audience.... Layer 2: Your personal offering What you say about yourself online must be 100% congruent with how people experience you when they meet you directly, face-to-face or virtually. Is there a mis-match between your two layers? Which is your area of strength? #communication #reputation
02.01.2022 How is 2020 shaping you? Humour - because you have to laugh, don't you?!
