25.01.2022 Happy (belated) International Day of the Midwife. Without these incredible women I would not be the mum I am today to these little ladies. My midwives gave me strength when mine was depleted, they showed me alternatives when I needed them, they supported, guided and fed my husband, they empowered me through two drug free labours, they whispered words of encouragement when my obstetrician was ready with the vacuum, they stayed hours late over their shifts to be with me to birt...h my baby, they helped me from the very first latch to ensure I had a successful breastfeeding journey, they held me and cared for me when I was at my most vulnerable and raw time in my life. I will never forget the smallest of gestures from my midwives during my pregnancies, labours and postpartum recovery and I will forever be grateful. 22.01.2022 Nurture Postpartum Sitz Soak A sitz soak is an old herbal remedy used after birth to aid recovery and reduce pain. A herbal brew placed in a shallow bath of water to cleanse the perineal area. Chances are your health professional may not know about it but I urge you to give it a go and I have listed a few key benefits of this deliciously calming routine (see website for more details). 1 Maintains hygiene and cleans the area - Post birth you are swollen, bleeding and may b...e a little worried to go near your nether region. So a sitz bath is the perfect way to keep the area clean, avoid bacteria build up from wearing pads and is a little less awkward than dousing it under a shower head. Just be sure to pat dry the area afterward. 2 Reduces Pain What do you do when you have a sore back. You apply heat or ice right? A warm sitz bath is the same principal for your perineum, its soothing, it encourages blood flow (which in turn aids recovery time), settles itching and reduces discomfort. 3 Eases haemmorrhoids and varicosities that you may have experienced during pregnancy or post birth. Warm water helps with soothing the area and the herbal properties used in our sitz soak assist with relieving these unsettling symptoms. 4 Gives you some time out. Being a new mum is hard work so taking some time out for yourself and having a calming bath is so important for your wellbeing and recovery. Lavender and chamomile will help calm that busy mind of yours and can also aid sleep. Popping a bowl inside your toilet and having a mini sitting sitz bath is the perfect alternative if you are strapped for time though. *and as always seek advice from your medical team for your post birth recovery. 16.01.2022 After a huge response over my latest post about pelvic organ prolapse and many private messages worldwide, I owe it all to you to share the article Taryn from @fitrightphysio wrote for @wholeheartedfamilyhealth. She provides in huge detail that we as womens health physios would struggle to highlight just in one appointment. From symptoms, to risk factors, to reasons why you are symptomatic at certain times of your life. Our bodies are dynamic and much like back pain sometime...s we have symptoms and other times we dont, so even if youve been cleared at your 6 week postnatal check this may not be enough to confirm you do not have a prolapse as our bodies and the impacts we load it with are forever changing. 50% of us will experience prolapse over our lifetime (not just postnatal) so I urge you to read this article and share it with all the women in your life. You can refer to the article via @wholeheartedfamilyhealth or directly at https://www.wholeheartedfamilyhealth.com/5-facts-about-vag/ See more

15.01.2022 Repair Oil is a gentle blend that is light on the skin and can be used during pregnancy and post birth. It is infused with subtle hints of chamomile and ideal for perineal massage to prepare for birth, connecting with your baby in the womb through touch and scar tissue management once the caesarean or episiotomy incision has healed. Read below from @holistichealthphysio on the benefits of perineal massage during pregnancy and see her website and podcasts for some helpful an...d essential birth prep techniques. #Repost @holistichealthphysio with @get_repost Have you heard of perineal massage to prepare your pelvic floor for birth? Did you know it may help you physically but also mentally prepare for labour? So far research shows that perineal massage could help first time moms in reducing risk of episiotomy and possibly tearing although these studies dont take into account birth position, spontaneous vs coached pushing or perineum support during the birth itself. Itd be great for future studies to look at the combo of these aspects. I find clinically that clients also mentally benefit from perineal massage. First time moms learn what it feels like to have the pelvic floor be stretched and breath through it. Subsequent moms have found it can help them feel more confident going into birth if theyve torn or had an an episiotomy before. The massage techniques help them learn to relax the pelvic floor including the area they tore previously. For the perineal massage techniques I teach my prenatal clients along with the flower bloom breath that can help you relax your pelvic floor during labour - see link in profile

12.01.2022 I feel like prolapse (descent of one or more pelvic organs) following childbirth is coming up more in conversation in mothers circles, but often it ends there because women arent sure what to do or where to go next if they are worried about this. Taryn from @fitrightphysio explains below that prolapse can be treated and cured with Womens Health Physio and we are the first line of treatment that should be recommended. Do your mumma friends a favour and tag them to let them ...know #Repost @fitrightphysio with @get_repost We need to talk about #prolapse . I have a skewed view - I feel like all I talk about are vaginas & prolapse. . But Im constantly reminded that for the majority of normal people who arent so #pelvicfloor obsessed, it is something that doesnt get talked about until it happens to them. . And then they feel alone and like its only them that its happened to. . Newsflash # 1 - youre not alone. Some studies quote up to 50% of mothers have prolapse of some description. . Newsflash #2 - the well meaning advice of listen to your body with regards to Postnatal exercise and activity, doesnt really cut it when it comes to #pelvicorganprolapse. . Prolapse can be descending with no symptoms until it gets to a level where youre aware of it. . Physios like me exist to physically assess you and help remove the guesswork with your Postnatal recovery. . Prolapse is often caused by birth injuries, some of which are noticeable (like with pain or leakage) and some of which are not (like a pelvic floor muscle tear or connective tissue deficit). . Knowing that at two months postpartum you are in a moderate or high risk category for prolapse, means that you can make informed decisions about the exercise youre going to choose in the near future. This isnt a death sentence to Crossfit and a farewell to running. It just means that you know that you may need to modify the load you put through your system while you achieve more endurance, better global strength, or your hormones change and your tissues harden. Or maybe you wear an internal support pessary (thats a whole different post worth...) . The gap between the two sides of See more

12.01.2022 A Perineal Cleansing Bottle - available online and one of the most underrated essentials to pack in your hospital bag or add to your birth kit. In some countries, these bottles are provided to every birthing woman but for some reason not here in Australia. . Post birth (vaginal or caesarean) you will feel sore and swollen down stairs, you will bleed heavily anywhere from 1-6 weeks, you will feel fatigued and perhaps nervous washing your perineum. . This not so fancy bottle f...illed with warm water will be your best friend post baby and this is just a list of its uses: Spraying it on your fanny as you wee will take away that lemon sting to a cut feeling especially as your urine post birth will be more acidic Spray in the shower or after using the toilet as an easy way of cleaning your fanny especially if you are a little nervous washing down there Ideal for caesarean births as bending during showering may be uncomfortable and awkward A gentle way to wash episiotomy and caesarean stitches The warm water helps sooth itchiness, hemorrhoids and swelling . . . For added relief we recommend 1-2 spoonfuls of our Nurture Sitz Soak with muslin bag provided, steeped in boiling water and added to the bottle when warm. Or pop in the fridge for a soothing cold squirt while you wash See more

07.01.2022 Something that really bothers me about our fast paced society is that new mothers have this unspoken pressure to bounce back to their pre baby body, life and work commitments. It takes a lot of adjustment especially in those sacred first forty days and fourth trimester for a mother to slow down and give herself space to devote to her new body, her new baby, letting go of her old life and surrendering to the ebbs and flows of day and night nurturing. This adjustment can be ove...rwhelming and isolating and a mother that does not heal with time, enough support around her and without a nutritious diet is a trigger for breastfeeding troubles, for milk depletion, for poor pelvic floor recovery and impact family relationships. This creates a vicious cycle for the development of depression and anxiety. In other countries and cultures this time is celebrated and nourished, to allow the mother (and the family) to rest and heal after birth and to feel supported during her transition into motherhood. We need to provide the Mothers around us and their baby with this special cocoon of care so that they can both transition slowly and gradually into their new world and bond outside the womb.

06.01.2022 Smudging is a sacred ceremony that involves burning herbs over ones body or surrounding to bless, honour and spiritually cleanse. Ive never used a smudge stick before but love an excuse to potter around with flowers. If its all too alternative for you, the bouquet itself is pretty right?
