25.01.2022 Ooomph! This one gets me- I remember those early days of breastfeeding. All.the.questions. And sure I was doing it wrong! Breastfeeding can be tricky. If you would love to have a bit of info up your sleeve then check out my Positive Breastfeeding workshops- next one is February 27th #Repost @nestedmag with @get_repost... You forget how much it takes in the beginning. There’s the pain. Sometimes because the latch is wrong. Always because it’s a new baby doing new things. There’s the waiting. Sometimes for the milk to come in. Sometimes for the milk to stop. There’s the questions. Is she getting enough? Is that a hungry cry? To pump or not? To try a bottle or wait? Did she burp enough? No matter how many times you’ve done this before, you forget how much it takes. The cracked nipples, the constant schedule, the living between 2 hour time blocks. But then you remember... This too will pass. This too will get easier. This too will work again. It takes a lot. But it gives even more. How would you describe your breastfeeding journey? Tough? Rewarding? Mixed feelings about it? : @plantandprune #nestedmag #thisismamahood See more
24.01.2022 COLOSTRUM: Look at this amazing collection of colostrum or as we, in the birthy world like to call it, liquid gold! Colostrum is the first milk your body makes for baby. It is nutrient dense, full of immunity, helps baby clear out the meconium and sustains them until your mature milk comes in over the next couple of weeks. Did you know you can harvest this for your newborn from 37 weeks into syringes for freezing like in the image? It is a bonus if baby needs some time in NIC...U or in the baby nursery for any reason. Speak to your midwife or lactation consultant to see if this is a good idea for you. We cover info like this in our virtual doulas sessions in Nest Bumps & Babies (link in bio or website for more deets) and in the Nest Positive Breastfeeding Workshops held throughout the year. photo via @birthing_matters Sent via @planoly #planoly #lactationconsultant #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #Breastfeedingcounsellor #lactation #newmums #motherhood #postnatalcare #postpartum #colostrum
23.01.2022 Do I really need a birth plan? Can’t I just go with the flow? Hmmm, well I guess you can but may I suggest you think about whose flow it will be? I can guarantee it will be the hospital’s or your provider’s flow - not yours. But birth is so unpredictable, how can I plan for it? ... We make plans all the time. We plan our weddings, our holidays, our careers. We don’t expect it always to work out as we planned but we surround ourselves with professionals and we know our options and we have back up plans. Birth is much the same. Educate yourself about procedures you may be offered and surround yourself with supportive professionals (PS get yo ‘self a doula ;) )to give yourself the best chance at a beautiful birth experience. Trust me, it is hard to make a choice about a procedure you know nothing about, especially 7 hours into labour. For my clients, I suggest that the main part about writing a birth plan is learning about the process of birth and how it unfolds, BEFORE you are in the birth room. And for those of you who have a provider who doesn’t like birth plans - my advice is that is a massive red flag. If they are disrespectful of your choices while you are fully dressed and in their office, you will NOT feel more empowered half naked, tired and surrounded by their team when it comes time to make a decision. Chose your birth team wisely. If you are curious about how a doula can support you to have a beautiful birth regardless of how it unfolds, then reach out and we can chat. I have availability form June 2021. 22.01.2022 Did you know that women who have a doula support them at their birth have a 50% less chance of a C-section, a 25% decrease in labour time, decreased use of syntocinon by 40% and a 60% decrease in epidural use !! (stats from a Cochrane Review) Wow!! That sounds great. But what exactly is a doula? The doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is exp...eriencing labor, or has recently given birth. Their purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience. And it is what I am passionate about. Reach out if you would like to chat about how I can support you and your partner to have a beautiful birth experience. You are worth it! 14.01.2022 HOLIDAY MASTITIS : What is holiday mastitis? Mastitis is technically inflammation of the breast. It can be caused by a blocked duct or an infection that has entered the breast, often from cracked nipples. You may have a red sensitive area or lump on your breast. 5 causes of holiday mastitis:... 1. change in feeding patterns as routines are altered 2. not fully draining the breast at each feed due to interruptions 3. ill fitting bras (hello Christmas dress) 4. mum becoming run down or doing too much 5. baby not latching well All things that can occur during the busyness of the holidays! If the new baby, who is the star of Christmas day, is constantly passed around, allowed to get tired and overstimulated, you may miss the hunger cues or baby simply may be fussy and out of their feeding routine. Travelling from house to house on Christmas Day or constant interruptions from visitors while feeding can all be enough to start a bout of mastitis. Lots of feeding, massaging the breast, rest and hydration are the best course of action. If it progresses to more of an infection with an increase in pain, fever and chills you may want to seek support from your IBCLC or GP (a breastfeeding friendly one!) We cover topics like this in our private FaceBook membership group - Nest Bumps & Babies and the Nest Positive Breastfeeding workshops. Visit the link in bio or website for all of my offerings to support you in your pregnancy and early days of motherhood. xoxo Sent via @planoly #planoly #lactationconsultant #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #mastitis #holidaymastitis #Breastfeedingcounsellor #lactation #newmums #motherhood #postnatalcare #postpartum See more
04.01.2022 "The knowledge of how to birth is deep within you" - sometimes you just have to be reminded it is there. There is so much surrounding us that takes away our power in ourselves and replaces it with fear. Fear of our pregnancies, our labours and our births. Fear that our bodies aren't capable, fear that we are actually broken, fear that we "won't know what to do". A big part of Nest Active Birth Workshops is regaining your faith in yourse...lf and your body's ability to birth your baby. It's a massive mind shift for some couples. I love hearing that they feel so much more prepared and calmer after attending my workshop. They feel like a team now. Their partner feels like they "won't be in the way of the doctors" and that they can actually do this (spoiler alert: you could always do this ;) ) The dates for next years workshops are up on the website and ready for booking. It is perfect to attend from 20 weeks so you have time to practice the techniques and prepare your mind and body ready for a beautiful birth regardless of how it unfolds.
