24.01.2022 At what age can a child choose which parent to live with? Every family is different, but our family lawyer Elaine goes through how it works with Beanstalk Single Mums https://beanstalkmums.com.au/when-can-our-child-decide-whi/

23.01.2022 As a team, as individuals, as mothers, we have watched the horrors in the US and the horrors that continue in Australia in our own indigenous communities. In our quarantine bubbles, as predominantly white women who will never understand what it is like to face racism, it is hard to know what to do or say. But we can choose to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. We will not be silent. We will be actively anti-racist in our workplace, our homes, our lives. Whe...re to start? Heres one small but big way. We are learning from The Conscious Kid about why white parents need to do more than talk to their kids about race and racism. We are critically assessing how we interact with our children on a daily basis. How do we set up our lives? How do we react to news headlines? Where do we spend our time? What books do we read? Who do we invite over? How do we respond to overtly racist remarks made in earshot? We will keep learning. We recognise our white privilege and we stand in solidarity with our Australian Indigenous community and people of colour across the globe, today and always

23.01.2022 Every time a past client refers a new client, we pay it forward and invest $5 in another womans business via Kiva, providing safe, affordable access to capital to help women around the world create better lives for themselves and their families. We choose to invest in women, as women are proven more likely than men to share the rewards of microfinance and put their income back into their families and communities, driving illiteracy and mortality rates down and GDP up.... This quarter we invested $700 in Caurie, a female-led organisation in Senegal that provides financial assistance to female-led businesses in rural communities, and specialises in group solidarity lending through "Village benches", which are communally-governed groups of up to 50 women. This loan will allow Caurie to help their borrowers businesses recover from the effects of COVID-19. #bethechange #payitforward #womensupportingwomen See more

22.01.2022 This weekend, we're hitting the High St, doing the things that make us feel like us, laughing with our friends and family, and bypassing Kmart to spend some coin at the local businesses that need our love right now: Marlee - I’m going to celebrate my brother’s birthday at Peacock Inn Hotel, and catch up with friends in a park wearing my new earrings from Think Thornbury. Next week I’m looking forward to seeing all the lovely ladies at Fabu'Lash & Beauty and Amalfi Hair and Be...auty to get my eyelashes and hair in order. Dylan - Parma night from Eat Cannoli and all the fried things from Gills Fish & Chips Monalisa - Taming my mane at Amalfi Hair and Beauty and bejeweling my MT Nail Beauty Bar to inhale cocktails at Section 8 Melbourne Marta - Catching up on sleep after a mega week of contract reviews (the Melbourne market is back on!) then get my kittens booked into Northcote Animal Hospital and Pretty Kitty All Natural Cat Grooming - I'll deal with my hair and nails later! Laura - I've got a massage booked in with Motion Myotherapy Northcote Remedial Massage Melbourney then I'm going to grab a present from A Quirk Of Fate or Neighbourhood Books to take to an IRL birthday party! Tahlia - I'm excited to catch up with Mario at Fluff Hair (and get mah hair did) And hoping I can nab a table at my local cafe (Bedggood & Co. ) who did such an amazing job keeping our little neighbourhood fed and caffeinated all the way through! And every time I went in they paused to ask how I was in that way that shows they're REALLY asking, not just doing that Aussie thing of 'hey how's it going, yeah good you?' Who did we miss? Which local businesses will you be supporting this weekend?

21.01.2022 Stacey, Christine and the team at Healthy Business Finances have had our back since we were a two-women and a law student operation in the front room of Lauras house. We couldnt have found our way without their patience and kindness (especially in these last few weeks) xx

21.01.2022 We did it Melbourne. Hold your beers close and your people closer and never let them go! (metaphorically that is - masks, socially distanced, elbow kisses etc etc) #getonthebeers #melbourneiloveyou #covidlife

20.01.2022 Since lockdown began, requests for our $220 family law strategy sessions have doubled. Some people who book a strategy session have a verbal agreement with their ex and want to know the next steps to put it in place. Others havent even discussed separation, and just want to know what ducks they need lined up before they start that conversation. Others have already moved on and need our help making the paperwork match that. Others are in a bad place and need a strategy to get... out of there ASAP. You can book a free 10 min chat with Talya or a 1 hour strategy session for $220. We take full instructions via our induction questionnaire prior to our strategy sessions, so that hour is all about advice on where you stand and giving you a plan going forward. Because knowledge is power. Book now: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=18432224

19.01.2022 Its Monalisas birthday today, so heres the Nest Legal guide to celebrating team birthdays in lockdown: 1. Marlee, our birthday queen, runs a birthday Whatsapp group, booting out the person whose birthday is coming up so everyone can discuss what present they might like. 2. We do Friday drinks at 4:30pm (so those with young kids can have a drink before the witching hour starts). Sometimes this means our conveyancing team are still doing some last-min...ute settlement wrangling (getting cross at banks, making sure purchasers get their keys) but thats #conveyancinglife. 3. As virtual drinks means one person can speak at once, one of us will go around the room and make sure everyone gets to show some love (whether it is wishing the person a happy birthday or, like at Louises farewell, sharing what well each miss about them). 4. BYO drink and snacks, alcoholic or not. But share what it is to give some culinary inspo for the weekend! 5. Kids, pets and lovers welcome. 6. Go into the sunshine or away from your desk if you can. 7. Have the team Whatsapp and non-verbal body language going at the same time, so multiple conversations can take place like IRL. (we dont have any #WFH drinks photos so heres an adorable one of Mona and Dylan from pre-lockdown!) See more

18.01.2022 Laura talking COVID survival and copycats in todays Lawyers Weekly https://www-lawyersweekly-com-au.cdn.ampproject.org//2/amp

18.01.2022 Between them, Shelley and Laura have settled over 150,000 property settlements (Dylan counted!) starting back in the day when settlements involved cheques, faxes, requisitions on title and mad dashes across the CBD in the rain. On 19 May, they will be reflecting on that journey and speaking at Law Week with PEXA and the Real Estate Institute of Victoria about Digital Property Settlements and what to expect when buying or selling property. It's a free online event and you can book here: https://lawweek.net.au//digital-property-settlements-what/

17.01.2022 Im finding that if I physically write down three non gin related things to look forward to for the week, it is helping A LOT. Popping it on a big pink Post-It Note to look at between each anxious phonecall or fight breakup between two bored kids. It is a variation on that reflecting backwards being grateful thing, but with a twist for us future-focused folk! Number one for me this week is the televisation of one of my fave books of the last decade, Normal People. Number two... is an Elvis-themed ukelele Zoom jam on Thursday. And number three is the promise of a hand-delivered lasagne dinner from our beloved neighbours #bigwarmcheesyhug. What are you looking forward to this week? See more

16.01.2022 Can you just smell it, Melbourne parents? The sweet sweet single-tasking. The uninterrupted thoughts and conversations. Their little faces when they get to see their mates for the first time in forever. Homeschooling was one thing. But we survived and my 7yo can now find a penalty interest clause at 20 paces. Home kindergarten, on the other hand? Solely responsible for my left eyebrow turning grey. Can you imagine how match fit we are goi...ng to be after no childcare for this long? They send footy players to train up mountains in America because the high altitude means their bodies need to fight harder to breathe. Then they come down and win grand finals. Thats going to be us. More powerful than we know. Unstoppable. #comeonmelbourne #istandwithdan See more

16.01.2022 ON THE BLOG - COVID-19 sucks for everyone, but especially people going through a separation. Many are asking if it is better to wait until the pandemic is over before negotiating a property settlement. Or if it is even possible to negotiate a property settlement when property inspections and valuations are prohibited. On the blog today, Elaine from our family law team talking about some of the ways that we are seeing COVID-19 impact family law property settlements: https://www.nestlegal.com.au/blog/covidpropertysettlements

16.01.2022 ARE YOU A TEACHER? We love you so! Any teacher who presents their Victorian Institute of Teaching card for conferences booked during the summer school holidays receives a $100 discount off our Wills packages. We know that teachers often put their students well before their own needs. Make 2020 the year to take care of you and your family. On our website, you can get started giving instructions anytime or you can book a free chat with a Wills lawyer if youd like to talk to a human first! https://www.nestlegal.com.au/wills-and-end-of-life-planning

16.01.2022 Nest Legal 2 is live! Like many great Northcote businesses before us (Lam Lam, Meine Leibe, GoodColes and ShitColes), we have opened an identical shop within spitting distance of the first because why not? It will allow our conveyancing team to be their noisy collaborative beautiful selves, whilst freeing up meeting rooms and upping the serenity for our wills and family clients at our first office at 397 High St. If in doubt, come to Nest Legal 1. But dont think youre going mad if youre tramming down High St and think youre seeing double!

16.01.2022 Tomorrow night, Laura will be live on ABC News Instagram talking about all things estate planning - the docs you need in place, the conversations you should have and the steps you can take, legal and non-legal, to make it easier for your loved ones. Tune in 8pm over on Insta tomorrow and we'll be answering live questions! (fun fact - many years ago when Nest Legal was a startup, we buddied up with our High St neighbour Turn The Corner Medical Clinic and tried to run a Facebook live Q&A answering legal and medical questions of new parents via comments on a post, years before Facebook/Insta Live existed, and Facebook jumbled our answers into a nonsensical stream of consciousness and we never tried it again. And look now, Dr Tamsin - it's a thing!)

15.01.2022 This is how I explained the bushfires (and most things) to my kids: Fires (or bad stuff) will happen. But you can be part of the solution. You dont need to wait for the people in charge to do this; you can be a superhero and help fix the world yourself. Every bit helps. So we went to Bright to be superheroes and support the businesses that give people jobs at a time when these towns really need some $ and love. And what a fab place to go with kids?!? Amazing playground (next to an amazing brewery!), berries to pick, a river to swim in, cheese, gin and deliciousness galore. Five stars! #emptyesky #spendwiththem #roadtripforgood #longweekend

15.01.2022 So we committed to walking 808kms for One Foot Forward and raising funds for mental health services before property inspections restarted again But then inspections suddenly came back! So we pivoted for the eleventy billionth time this year and clocked 883kms and raised some sweet coin for the Black Dog Institute before Mental Health Day instead. Then got smashed with contracts and forgot to post on social media for 3 weeks W...e're still walking most morns cos it makes our brains feel good. But now the property market and school is back on. And we can drink with a friend in the park without having to do burpees. And our eyebrows might be wild and we miss our sisters, but it kinda feels like everything might be ok after all...? #wegotthismelbourne #onestepatatime #onefootforward See more

14.01.2022 Feels like everyone is buying the house or changing the Will or leaving the man or doing the thing they thought about all of lockdown at the moment. Me? I just wanted was some live music and a curly fringe. Boom. Thanks Neel Loves Curls

14.01.2022 We are so excited that our beloved neighbourhood eateries are opening up again! What are the dishes that you are most excited about eating inhouse? 13.01.2022 And then there was that week at the start of the second Melbourne lockdown where 35% of the contracts we looked at were for beach houses and bush blocks even though the good people of Darebin arent allowed to leave the city limits... 12.01.2022 If you're a first home buyer considering buying a property to renovate or perhaps renovating at some point in the future, check out this podcast episode of The Buyers Bible, hosted by property queen Amy Lunardi Property and featuring the formidable Rebeka Morgan from BuildHer Collective and our Principal Lawyer/conveyancing nerd Laura Vickers. Rebeka and Amy talk about all the opportunities in renovating - different types of renos, how not to overcapitalise and who to have i...n your team. Then Laura talks about the risks of buying a renovated property and what extra due diligence you should be doing before buying a property renovated by someone else. https://thebuyersbible.com.au/episode-18-the-realities-of-/

12.01.2022 Laura talking to Lawyers Weekly about the importance of an awesome team and hard work (and kale and gin!) if you want to have any semblance of a life as a lawyer...

12.01.2022 We shutdown our office on a Sunday in mid-March. We could see the writing on the wall and we wanted to get our systems in place before the school shutdown hit. Tahlia and I managed the logistics of that (cables! cashflow! compliance!), but this woman? She managed all the fears and the feelings. First, she called all our vendors who didnt yet have signed contracts and talked through a strategy with each of them based on what we knew at the time. Between us, we then spoke to e...ach purchaser who was worried about losing their jobs or their removalists being shut down or their dog getting the virus or whatever else was keeping them up at night, and helped them each come up with a plan. She runs our team huddle every morning to see how everyone is feeling that day and how we are taking care of ourselves, and she then spends every Friday afternoon calling each of our team individually to check they are really OK. She has only lost it once since shutdown and that was when an unsupervised junior lawyer on the other side of a transaction kept trying to delay settlement because the grass had grown. Shelley is the cool calm and collected leader that I would like to be in a crisis but am not #zeropokerface. Between us though? Weve got this #strongwomen

12.01.2022 COVID is raising all sorts of questions for families: - My ex wont let me see my kids because I work as a nurse and may come into contact with COVID19 what are my legal rights? - How do I comply with parenting orders if I am in iso? - Should we sell the family home now or wait until after lockdown?... Need an answer to a quick question? Call our free COVID family law information line on 03 9070 8255 (Tuesday and Thursday 1-4pm). If we can answer it in 10 mins we will, else we will let you know the next steps to get the help you need. If we are on another call, leave a message and well call you back. If you have set availability, book a time at https://nestlegal.as.me/COVID

12.01.2022 Weve helped clients with kids sitting on their laps since we began. But particularly so at the moment! If we know that you will have young kids at home during our Wills videoconference, we will: Try to settle as many of the details (middle names, dates of birth, addresses) over email first (if they are missing from your instructions), so we can spend the conference time talking about the big issues Let you know if we are about to switch to a topic that litt...le ears might be sensitive about If we know there are areas where the two of you disagree and want to talk through a resolution, we will start with those issues. And we understand if you need to pause to wipe a bottom or fix a snack. We open Nest Legal 2 on Wednesdays for signing. Signing only takes 5 minutes and we sterilise the bench and pens beforehand. But we understand if you want to do it in two shifts so you dont need to bring the kids with you. We also send you detailed signing instructions in case you want to organise your own witnesses. See more

10.01.2022 Your folks might have a Will in place already and think that is the end of the story. It isnt. If you have asset protection concerns (including if your relationship is on shaky ground), you need to discuss with them whether you are inheriting as safely as you could. Further, if any of your siblings have drug/alcohol problems or are financially incompetent, your parents also need to consider if it is wise leaving gifts to them outright. If you are your parents executor, yo...u need to understand the scope of the assets you are dealing with, any specific instructions and what their wishes are. It is never an easy conversation but it is timely at the moment. There is a limit, ethically, to how much you can encourage your parents to prepare or change a Will, but if you show them how to book a free chat on our website, we can have the hard conversations, explain why it is necessary and get them started https://nestlegal.as.me/book-a-chat

10.01.2022 Todays homeschool project - help mummy make a video for the internet about why a Will is only one of the documents that you need to have in place to make it easy for those left behind. Our estate plan packages (starting from $500) include powers of attorney, superannuation advice, template letters to your guardian and executor, a digital assets register, appointment of a medical treatment decision-maker, an advance care plan, any stat decs you need to leave outside the Will..., and a superduper comprehensive Will that covers all the things! Get started now on the website or book a free 10 min chat with a Wills lawyer via the website if you have any questions: https://www.nestlegal.com.au/wills-and-end-of-life-planning https://nestlegal.as.me/book-a-chat

09.01.2022 Eight years married today. A shotgun wedding because my mum was sick but then, just as we unloaded boxes and boxes of our fave Tassie bubbles and Harcourt cider, we discovered I was five weeks pregnant too. Our favourite people gathered in our Coburg backyard as our chooks clucked and I scoffed two Weetbix for the nausea and then walked down the garden path to Leonard Cohen. And you want to travel with her, And you want to travel blind, And you know you can trust her, For ...shes touched your perfect body with her mind And then here we are eight years and two kids later in a pandemic, him doing the bulk of the home-schooling as I fight with all my might to keep the third baby, my business, going in this weird auction-less world. Travelling blind. But together.

08.01.2022 Back in March, Laura gave a seminar to the Law Institute of Victoria about best practice for communicating with your offsite legal team. But we are SO much more awesome at this now, as we tweak our systems with each week of lockdown. In case it is helpful, this is how we do it now: - whole firm huddle at 8:45am before the phones start. We let everyone know what support we need from each other that day and what capacity we have to help others. Ki...ds/cats can join in (helps them understand what Mum does all day) - Wills huddle at 9am to allocate and scope new files that have come in overnight (usually blended families, high net worth and business succession to Bianca and the rest to Marlee). Conveyancing meet weekly to discuss any process changes needed. Family meet bi-weekly. - 4 Whatsapp channels for non-file chats - one for the whole firm and one for each team. For big decisions (eg changing precedents or our webforms), we note the issue here to discuss at next team meeting. Fun non-urgent stuff on the main channel only (and it is OK to mute this while doing deep work) - File-related questions on Communicate on the electronic Smokeball file - if you want someone to do something, create a task on their Smokeball tasklist (dont let the next step get lost in email, Whatsapp or meeting chat) - Smokeball tasks + messages cleared at end of each day - weekly individual wellbeing checkins - Fri drinks at 4:30 (with Whatsapp going at same time, given only one person can verbally talk at once). Our guiding principles: - minimise internal emails + phone calls (because we get so many from clients and other lawyers) - create spaces with the right people for each type of discussion - big decisions, fun stuff that makes us us, wellbeing etc - capture the next step - in times of rapid change + uncertainty, overcommunicate. 07.01.2022 We are back in the office, with itchy eyes and heavy hearts. Most of us are country girls who grew up not fearing much, other than bushfires. As adults, we are a team of chronically over-prepared mothers and oldest daughters who like to believe that through our diligence we can control all the things. And now our country is alight with uncontrollable bushfires, worse than our 6yo selves could ever have imagined. And we cant stop them.... But we are doing what we can: - We have donated $2000 to WIRES Emergency Fund for Wildlife and several smaller direct donations to those personally affected by the fires. - We appreciate that lawyers arent very useful until the burning stops and the paperwork starts but we will offer free certified copies and stat dec witnessing in our Northcote office to anyone affected by the fires. - We will continue to advocate with our 2020 goal of making our office carbon neutral and promoting the same within the legal profession (Powershop, ethical super, recycled paper, composting of food waste, videoconferencing - it all adds up) - We are thinking about what we can change in our processes that might help - better education for our clients buying in bushfire zones? info on green retro-fitting of homes and solar panels? encouragement for our estate planning clients to consolidate into a green super fund or make a donation to an environmental charity or the essential services? Is this our role as lawyers? Probably not. But it beats feeling so helpless about our countrys situation. And in the short term, we will be shouting all our feelings at this Fridays climate change march (6pm State Library). Will we see you there? 07.01.2022 This International Womens Day Im thankful for: - my team of ten feisty women (and one excellent feminist bloke). Thank you. - our clients, male and female (but lets be honest, 90% of the time its a woman who has taken on the mental load to get the legals sorted), especially those who choose Nest because of our commitment to support other female-led businesses through Kiva. Thank you. - Melbournes legal sisterhood who live their feminism, supporting other women wherever... they can, with favours, referrals and late night texts of kind words. We are all too goddamn busy to say thanks in person as much as we should. Thank you - husbands who can sing all the words to the Moana soundtrack and know the allergies of every kid in the kinder room. There is no equality for working women until this becomes unremarkable. Thank you - these two beautiful women, my mother-in-law who keeps all my worlds turning and my headstrong daughter who assumes no less than she will be supported by men and women alike to do all the things. Heres to a future where she can. #strongwomenmayweknowthemmaywebethemmayweraisethem #iwd2020 See more

07.01.2022 If you or your partner have started a business or a directorship since you bought your home, consider if that persons name should be removed from the title, so you dont lose your home if it all goes horribly wrong. Or maybe your partner bought your home before you were a couple and you dont want to have to go through the probate process if they die? You dont pay stamp duty or CGT to change which spouse has their name(s) on title of your principal place of residence. You ...will need your banks consent, which can take a few weeks (which we will organise for you). But its a pandemic and we have all the time in world, so why not get the ball rolling? 04.01.2022 Today we farewell our beloved Louise, as she starts her next chapter with her daughter and grandson in New South Wales. We always knew it would be a temporary romance. When we first reached out for a coffee with her in 2018, she said "you gotta know two things about me: - Ill be coming straight from my eyebrows appointment so Ill look like Bert and Ernie - Eventually Im going to move back to my girl in NSW, but until then you wont fin...d anyone who is as passionate about wills and estates and as excited to be a part of Nest Legal as me." And right she was on all fronts. We imagined today we would be gathered in the window seats at the front of Nest 2, with Shelley pouring out a bottle of Aldi rose and Dylan sharing his baked goods and Lou telling one of her stories whilst the various Nest children try to sit in her lap one last time. But a Zoom farewell it is. We know youll do great things up north Lou Lou and it has been a privilege to travel with you on your legal path xx See more

04.01.2022 Need family law advice but there is nowhere private in your home to do a videoconference? Do this: 1. Next time you go to the bathroom, book in a strategy session here: https://nestlegal.as.me/schedule.php (or if you arent sure if it is a family lawyer that you need, book a free 10 min chat via the same link) 2. Over your next few trips to the bathroom, fill in our family law induction form - https://nestfamilylaw.settify.com.au/. This means we can spend the conference givin...g you concrete advice and a strategy going forward, rather than gathering background information. 3. At the time of your conference/chat, make sure your phone has full battery. Go for a walk with headphones and a mouthpiece, with your mask over the mouthpiece to block wind. Walk somewhere private. If you are pushing a pram with a child older than 18 months, consider snacks, headphones and their favourite show. 4. During the conference, we will talk through what options you have, what steps you can take to protect yourself, and map out a way forward. You dont need to take notes - we can email this to you afterwards. You will be back within the hour with a plan. Youve got this. One step at at time.

04.01.2022 Until the day that property inspections and childcare are back on, the Nest Legal team have committed to walking 808km to raise funds for mental health support services as part of One Foot Forward and more generally keep our sh*t together. Why 808? No, it isnt the anticipated cost of the drinks tab for the first Friday back together. Or the number of times weve asked our kids to stop fighting. It is the sum of 397 and 411 (the street numbers of our two High St offices). To... us, it represents that until we can come together again, the best thing we can do is support each other to take one step at a time towards the place that we want to be. Our team name is Nest Eagles (Martas idea - because so many call centres think thats what were called anyway). You can follow our progress or donate on the One Foot Forward page. Or, better still, sign up your own team and come pound the streets with us! https://www.onefootforward.org.au/fundraiser/nesteagles PS The official Black Dog Institute One Foot Forward program starts 1 October but we started our tracking this morning cos you gotta do what you gotta do...

02.01.2022 If you are going to struggle to meet your mortgage repayments, 1. Talk to your bank early. This article explains how. 2. If you need to sell, it is better that YOU do this rather than let the bank sell it, as you have more of an interest in getting the best possible price for it. https://www.theage.com.au//saving-your-home-how-to-ask-for

02.01.2022 We always discuss life insurance when we are helping clients with their Wills - do they have enough in place to pay off any debts/outgoings they couldnt afford to repay on their own? But on my familys life admin list this year is to look at what we spend on other types of insurance too. Thinking about insurance sometimes means making sure you arent over-insured too, particularly at a time when you might be struggling with day to day cashflow. ... Think about: Are your house contents insured for the right amount? Have you listed all the serial numbers of stuff that could be stolen? What individual assets should have their own insurance? Are you paying too much for health insurance extras, particularly if you aint having any more kids? And then there is life/TPD/income protection insurance. If your partner died or couldnt work or lost their job, how long could you live off savings? If you have a good safety net already, consider if you are paying too much for insurance, and would you do better self-insuring a bit more by paying down your mortgage faster? The answer will be different for every family. Dont add to the trauma of losing a parent/spouse by adding financial uncertainty into the mix. My favourite insurance resources are: www.doineedhealthinsurance.com.au and Choice generally, Compare the Market, a good financial planner, and the Barefoot Investor book. See more

02.01.2022 This beautiful soul is finally off to visit her family in New Zealand tomorrow! It has been heartbreaking as each bit of lockdown lifted and we could go to the pub and some of us drove off to see our country cousins and others flew interstate to meet new loves... Yet Karen still couldn’t see her people. But tomorrow she can. If they let her on the plane with all her presents! Travel safe Queen K, and we will shower your clients with as much love as you do until you come home x

01.01.2022 Back to school today! My favourite homeschooling moments with this guy: When he was given a task to type a story, but he figured out how to use the dictate function on the ipad and he just dictated it When we first talked about online school and he thought about it for a minute then said But how do you play downball through the internet? Letting him do the things he loves (maths, bike riding, reading, recording music videos together) He sits in our team huddle at 8:...45 each morning as we discuss what challenges we each have on for the day and what support we need from each other, then throughout the day hell ask me if Monas tricky settlement went through OK or if Tahlia got all her documents out. I love that he listens and thinks about it so deeply, although it means there are now two people in this household stressing about every detail of Nest Legal! See more

01.01.2022 When I was a baby lawyer, my mentor told me that the lawyers who survive are the ones who enjoy the intellectual exercise of applying the law, and if you only do it because you want to help people and have clients be grateful for your help, youll burn out before 30. No one wants to see a lawyer, he told me, so why would you expect clients to say thanks if you bust a gut? Thats out of your control, that cant be what drives you. (He also thought onlin...e legal services would never catch on. So, yep, I go to him more for cocktail tips than professional advice these days.) And instead, we check in with each client at the end of the matter to see if there was anything we could have done better. Which is as nerve-wracking as asking was it good for you? 35 times a week... But for people who are driven by wanting to make a positive difference in others lives, the responses are like crack for the soul. And, weirdly, it feels even better when the comments arent about me. Because being a kickarse lawyer isnt that hard if you give a sh*t. Finding a team of people who care as much as you and putting processes in place so they can be their best selves whether it is a crazy spring property market or a global pandemic - thats the hard bit. And not always in my control, this is true. But goodness Ill die trying. See more
