24.01.2022 COMMUNICATING IN ATTACK In my last post I wrote about being specific when we say ‘talk more’ when we’re coaching. I wrote about leading players in attack, the players without the ball, needing to call ‘here’ and ‘wait’. This post continues on from that, but this time focusing on how the player with the ball can communicate. The player with the ball can often see the space that the leading players should run into, so they can tell the running player to ‘change’ (change directi...on). Here’s a few activities to help teach this. ACROSS & BACK Conduct the activity ‘Across & Back’ in the attachment. Then add the rule ‘once on the way across and once on the way back, one player, when they have the ball must pause and call change and the player without the ball must stop and change direction before receiving the pass.’ And then they keep running and passing. If you have a player that never calls, make the rule that their partner can’t pause and call, it must only be them. PINGS Conduct the activity ‘Pings’, see the attachment. Then add the rule ‘about ever 4th pass the player with the ball must stop with the ball and call ‘change’, and the running player must change direction before receiving the ball. These few activities will start the process of teaching players with the ball to call out and communicate with their team mates before they pass.

22.01.2022 TIP FOR TEACHING A SHOULDER PASS: As Australian Coaches we are wanting to coach our players to do a one handed shoulder pass. I find that most young players hold the ball at their chest while looking for who to pass to. So then when they want to do a shoulder pass they have to move the ball to their shoulder first, this takes extra time and isn't fluent. So now I teach them to hold the ball at their shoulder ready to do the shoulder pass while they are looking around. I find this helps them develop a quick, fluent & strong pass. So my key coaching point is "Put the ball on your shoulder" as soon as they catch it. Let me know how you go.

20.01.2022 Explaining a training activity & getting your message through. Many people absorb things better visually. A visual approach adds variety and can be a great way to explain an activity. Verbal organisation and coaching instructions are the most commonly used but have you ever tried showing your players a video of a training activity before they do the same activity?... Videos can be a great way to motivate your team to perform to the standard of the players on the video or better. What about drawing the activity to explain it. Get a whiteboard or some butchers paper. You don’t have to be an artist to get your point across. Later in your season you may ask some players to show activity set-up and movements on a white board too. All players learn differently, so adding visual explanations could be a great way for some of your players to pick things up quickly. Give it a try and measure your player’s response to different techniques, you might be surprised. Enjoy your coaching, Gillian Lee

20.01.2022 Hi Army. Its been a while since I updated you on the ratings, and unfortunately its not great news. The last four weeks have started to drop away significantly...!! We were up to almost 50% higher ratings than last year, and now dropped down to under 40%. Appreciate School Holidays effects this, but the next 3 weeks are MASSIVELY IMPORTANT leading into finals!! So please get out there and continue to push the WAKEUPNETBALL message as much as you can, and ask people everywhere, in small businesses, large businesses, hospitals, bars, restaurants, airports, schools - anywhere you can think for people to turn a TV ON, PLEASE DO SO!! Thanks Sue See more

20.01.2022 Sorry for no posts lately....I've been busy traveling and coaching. Some of you may have noticed my short hair now.... cancer treatment in 2019 :( All great now! We are now traveling around Australia over the next 3 years in our new little caravan. Week 3 into the trip I was missing coaching (haven't coached for 12 months since I was sick), so I put the word out in the small towns we are passing through. hahaha week 1 I coached 6 days....and loved it. Here's some of the teams... and coaches I worked with.....and good netball friends I've caught up with in my travels so far. We are both inland and on the coast of QLD from June-Dec so if you want me to coach (players and/or coaches) at your club or assoc PM me to see if we are passing through your town. Love the netball communities around Australia. See more

18.01.2022 Communication on Court for Juniors We certainly don't want our players all calling out 'HERE' for the ball. This often results in all 7 players calling and the thrower ending up passing to the loudest caller. However, we also don't want all players saying nothing. It's a matter of teaching our players ‘when’ to call. I find that when junior or senior players call for the ball, together with a great lead, the thrower passes with more confidence and no hesitationboth great rea...sons we should teach our players to use their voices. What I do find with older teams; I hear coaches and players saying we need to talk more. I find that this is like saying ‘we need to attack more’. So therefore, we need to teach the skill of ‘talking’ and BE SPECIFIC with exactly what we mean. Do we mean encourage more, call for the ball, or use specific words in defence, like side, or middle? Over the coming weeks I’ll explain different types of talking and how to teach them. Today let’s focus on talking with say 12 year olds when they are attacking. Simply play ‘Keeping off’ (See in the first comment of the post). Players are required to call ‘here’ every time they want the ball. If they are going to change direction, they call ‘wait’. It sounds easy, but you’ll find a lot of players don’t say a thing. Insist on a call by all. Teach them to only call if they are running and are free. This activity starts this process. In the rest of the activities in your training session have players calling if they want the ball. See what happens and what happened in the games at the end of training, do they call or not, again insist on it and have this as your main coaching point for the session. This is just the start of the talking process. If you need further suggestions, let me know what your players are doing and I’ll see if I have suggestions specific to your team.

18.01.2022 Gill you keep activities so simple at training, yet you get the best out of all your players. "I got told this from a coach at one of my State League training sessions. I’d never really thought about it before, but I do keep activities simple, but I always try to: 1. Demand a high intensity from players. 2. Give positive, constructive feedback.... 3. Make players feel great about themselves by the type of feedback I give. 4. Show enthusiasm & passion for the team with excitement and positivity in your voice and body language". "The activities I use may look simple, but a lot of experience and application of different learning techniques goes into developing my activities. So lots of coaches can hopefully benefit from my experience through using my coaching resources. By combining proven activities and a good delivery leads coaches to getting the best from players in everything they do". "How you deliver your sessions is a key factor and you can’t be a great coach without shining in your delivery". Work on the above to get the best from your players. All NETSKILLS Coaching resources aspire to deliver the passionate and simple philosophy. Available as Printed, DVD and EBooks.

11.01.2022 Coaching ideas How do coaches stop their team passing down the side-line from one end of the court to the other? I like teaching the saying: 'Side, Side, Centre it up'. This means that if the ball is received 2-3 times on the side line, then the next pass needs to be 'centred up'. And get them to sing it as a bit of a rhyme.... How to coach this? Coach the activity 'Down the line' and get the players to call out where they catch the ball, 'side' or 'centre'. As soon as they hear side 2-3 times the next player needs to lead into the centre and the thrower needs to ensure they only choose to pass into the centre of the court. OR The player who passed the ball could run into the middle of the court and receive the pass again. This also centres the ball up. This is really for player 14 years and older. Good luck with it.

10.01.2022 Well worth the read netballers.

10.01.2022 I hope your all listening to these classic Gasbags....very amusing and interesting.

08.01.2022 Question from a Coach What’s the best way to plan games for 10 players. They are mostly 12 years olds. What is the best way to rotate players? Should I play them a different position each quarter? Any advice? My Thoughts I would advise that in any individual game players should play either the same position or 2 positions close. ie. WD/GD, GD/GK.... They could play a different end of the court in the next game, but I feel it's too confusing if the swap from one end of the court to the other in 1 game. I know a lot of coaches here coach this age group every week and I'd love it if could SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS. See more

07.01.2022 Coaching Helpful Hint: So it's the start of the season and you have so many skills to teach your team....and you need them to be fitter. How about you link together lots of ball handling activities and have very little rest between each of them....this will cover ball handling and fitness.....and it's very specific netball fitness too. I believe in this approach and have used it when I've planned each training session in my Season Series Manuals. 20 Training sessions all planned for you. For 10-13 yr olds and 13-16 yr olds....Check them out and have a great season.

06.01.2022 Many coaches will be enjoying a break from netball duties and some are probably already gearing up towards their next season. On a personal note I have been taking a break from netball coaching (and posting) to overcome a medical condition. It is in these times you appreciate family and friends support. All is going along ok, it is just going to take a bit of time to get myself through this. This doesn’t mean I have stopped watching netball. My netball viewing has been qui...te intense lately, and keeping me occupied Australian Super Netball League, Victorian League, World cup qualifiers; it never stops if you don’t want it too. I have started writing my next book, slowly. It is a second Season Series manual; step by step sessions for coaches of 10-13 year old players. I appreciate all the positive feedback about SS 13-16 and love to hear from you so feel free to message me here. We have just sold our 200th Netskills eBook which is great. The demand for eBooks has been encouraging and we plan on releasing all new books on this medium also. We especially like the extended availability of my resources to more international and remote coaches and teachers. Keep enjoying your coaching, Gillian See more

05.01.2022 Great netball friend I've caught up with in our travels :)

05.01.2022 Coaching Tip Looking Down Court I find when coaching younger players ... well actually ALL players ... many of them don't look down court as a first option. Younger players tend to look sideways first since these players are in their vision as they catch the ball. To help fix this: ... At training conduct various activities where players drive forward for the ball, then pivot 180 degrees to look straight down court and release the ball quickly ... with a shoulder pass of course ... Then when you play 1/2 court and in your next match, have 'pivot quickly' and 'look down' as you key coaching points.

05.01.2022 I hope you've all got on board with #wakeupnetball Check out this video.
