20.01.2022 The motto of the most decorated battalion in the Pacific War, the gallant 2/14th Battalion, was 'Deeds not Words'. This should be adopted by our two Governments... in the official recognition of the wartime service of Papuan and New Guinea native carriers who were specifically excluded from benefits under legislation for compensation awarded to PNG soldiers who fought in the various campaigns. In 1980 the native carriers were also deemed to be ineligible for the PNG War Gratuity Scheme for ex-Servicemen. They were also ineligible for medals any any other form of official recognition. It's time to correct this historic anomaly by dedicating a special day to commemorate their memory in perpetuity. This will provide an opportunity for students and communities to pause and reflect on the contribution they made to our victory in the Pacific War. We submitted our first proposal for Kokoda Day to be proclaimed in 2006 - and many times since then - but so far it has been 'words not deeds'. Suggestions on how we can honour their legacy 75 years on are most welcome
