25.01.2022 Interesting Chiro Facts: 1) For every 2-3cm that your head moves forward, this doubles the load on the cervical spine. 2) Stress and other emotional factors play a major role in chronic lower back pain. Many people unconsciously tighten their back muscles when they are under stress. ... 3) Lifestyle factors that contribute to poor back health - lack of exercise, smoking, frequent and prolonged sitting, heaving lifting and too much time at a computer. 4) long terms use of corticosteroids causes bone weakness and contributes to back pain.

23.01.2022 CORE . SPINE. TRAINING The spine is a beautiful structure. It is made up of many muscles, ligaments, fascia and vertebrae (spinal bones) stacked on top of one another like the columns of a building. The spine is able to bear incredible load and yet it can also be flexible and mobile at the same time. The muscles, fascia, ligaments and joints of the spine work together to achieve the right balance between strength, load bearing, flexibility and injury prevention. ...Continue reading

21.01.2022 5 reasons to get off your bottom! In todays society, most of us lead fairly sedentary lifestyles. We sit down for most of the day behind a computer, if we are catching a train to and from work, majority of us are sitting with our heads hanging down and we have our eyes glued to the screen of the, laptop, iphone or the ipad. Otherwise we are sitting in the car driving to work or we are sitting at the dinner table, the study table or on the couch. You catch the drift; most of... us sit most of the day. Even if you are an avid gym goer and you exercise 5 times per week for an hour at the gym, that still leave of the majority of the day consumed with sedentary activities. What does sitting for prolonged periods of time actually do, that makes it potentially harmful. 1) Poor posture sitting for prolonged periods of time means that your body is staying in virtually the same position for that period of time. As we tire, slowly the body will droop into a more slouched position. The core muscles become deactivated, your head tends to draw forward and your shoulders become rounded. 2) Sore lower back In the ideal position; the lumbar spine (lower back) is a C-shaped curve. The spine is designed this way for ideal weight bearing. When we are in a seated position, this C shape in the lumbar spine is either lost or even worse reversed. Prolonged sitting means that the lumbar spine is load bearing in a less than ideal position. This can cause muscle imbalances and unnecessary stress on the joints of the lower back. 3) Muscle deconditioning - Your muscles lack use and are staying at the same length because of limited movement when you are sitting down for long periods of time. One of the reasons why so many people have tight hamstring muscles is because in a seated position the knees are at a 90-degree angle and the hamstring is a shortened position. 4) Loss of bone density. Weight bearing exercises such as walking and running contribute to greater bone density and play a major role in preventing the development of osteoporosis. In older adults who have had more active lives, hip fractures have been found to be as much as 38-45% lower, compared to those who are less active people (Osteoporosis Australia - www.osteoporosis.org.au) 5) Headaches Forward head carriage in a seated position, where your head is hanging forward and down, puts strain on the muscles of the neck, particularly the ones at the base of the skull called the suboccipital muscles. As high as 20% of headaches are cervicogenic in nature, meaning that the pain experienced in the head originates from the neck. Cervicogenic Headache: A Review of Diagnositic and Treatment Strategies. The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, April 2005, Vol. 105, 16S-22S.

19.01.2022 Chiropractic Myths Debunked! Myth one Chiropractors crack your bones If a chiropractor cracked your bone this would mean that your bone would be broken. So myth one is the biggest myth of all. ... When a chiropractor does a manual adjustment on someone, the correct term to use is cavitation. This means that the joint is tractioned in a controlled manner and any air bubbles trapped between the joint surfaces release and make a popping sound. It is the traction part of the manual adjustment that makes it effective not the cavitation. Myth two Chiropractors always crack Bones. There are many different types of chiropractors and they use a wide range of various techniques. Some use hand held tools, whilst others use manual therapy, whilst others use a branch of kinesiology. Over time therapists tend to development their own niche and work out how they can best help their clients. Even though all chiropractors do not work the same, they will certainly work out the best way to treat you using their own methods and techniques. Myth 3 Chiropractic therapy puts your bones back in place. This is a tricky one to explain. I often hear new clients say to me that I need to have my neck put pack in place. If you think about what that statement actually means, if your neck was out of place you would have had to have a very serious injury. For one of the bones in your spinal column to have moved out of place would be a big deal. The changes in alignment that we experience are really subtle changes. These alignment changes usually amount from muscle imbalances, ligament sprain and joint restriction. Chiropractic therapy is aimed at reducing imbalances in muscles and ligaments, reducing joint restriction and restoring movement.

14.01.2022 Chiropractic and Pregnancy Back pain is something that many women experience throughout pregnancy. This can be caused by the increased lumbar lordosis (lower back spine curve) resulting from the increasing abdominal weight as the baby develops and grows. Another structural adaptation includes the expansion of the ribcage (up to 10 cm) during pregnancy to allow for growth of the baby and this can create stress and tension in the mid back or thoracic region. Chiropractic care ...during pregnancy has been shown to be safe for both the expecting mother. As the pregnancy progresses there will be an increase in circulating relaxin hormone that cause significant muscle and ligament relaxation. This causes increased muscular and ligamanetous laxity around the pelvic structures and the cervix. This can also serve as another possible cause of back pain in pregnancy. One study concluded that the need for pain relief during delivery was halved in the pregnant patients who received chiropractic care. Further more, research has also revealed a 24% reduction in the average labour time for those women giving birth for the first time who had received chiropractic care. The labour times were found to be 39% shorter for women who were delivering for the 2nd or 3rd time, and who were receiving chiropractic care. In another study it was found that since effective treatments for pregnancy-related back pain are limited, clinicians may consider spinal manipulative therapy as a treatment option, if no contraindications are present. 13.01.2022 Chiropractic and your BRAIN - A technical Chiro Fact! Chiropractic therapy is concerned with the whole body, spine and nervous system, rather than the individual joints or muscles themselves. The joints and the deep muscles of the spine are made up of thousands of receptors that detect how our body is moving and they constantly fire sensory messages to the brain. ... These sensory messages literally activate many areas of the brain, so when the spine loses alignment and proper balance, this results in a reduction of the healthy brain stimulation that would normally come from a well moving spine.

12.01.2022 Muscle degeneration from too much sitting: Standing and movement activates your core muscles, whilst sitting for long periods of time and slouching can result in core weakness and core deconditioning. Tight back muscles together with a weak core, contributes to the sway back posture (increased lumbar lordosis). Prolonged sitting also means that the hip flexors often become tight and shortened and result in reduced hip mobility. In elderly people, one of the main reason for falls in reduced hip mobility.

12.01.2022 5 reasons why breathing correctly is one of the best things you can do for your body! We take somewhere in the vicinity of 20000 breaths per day. That means we contract our diaphragm muscle 20000 times per day. Imagine contracting your bicep muscle that many time through the day. We can live about 30 days or so without food and you can survive a week or so without drinking water, however our brain cannot survive for longer than 5 minutes without oxygen without escaping serio...us and permanent damage. Optimal breathing technique and mechanism can have a widespread affect on many facets of our health. Breathing not only facilitates the transport of oxygen to our cells, our organs and our brain, it also facilitates maintaining an acid alkaline balance in the body, it impacts our posture and our core strength. Breathing is an automatic function, we are able to breathe without giving to much thought, however it is one of the only function of the autonomic nervous system which we can cognitively over ride, meaning that if we chose to control it and improve the way we breathe, we can. So here are 5 reasons that correct breathing is so beneficial: 1) Correct and adequate breathing keeps the body and the brain well oxygenated. 2) Good posture facilitates good breathing and good breathing facilitates good posture. 3) Breathing maintains the moment to moment pH concentration levels in the blood. Subtle changes in the acid/base balance can have significant effect on the endocrine and immune systems, muscle function, pain perception and emotional dysregulation. 4) The stress response has an impact on our breathing and many of us today are under a state of constant and chronic stress because of lifestyle and financial pressures. This leads to poor postural adaptations and over breathing. 5) Breathing is one of the only autonomic functions that we can control in order to reverse the impact of stress and normalize our breathing mechanisms. 12.01.2022 Whiplash injuries: If you experience a sudden movement in either a backward, forward or sideways direction causing your neck and head to be thrown quickly in a certain direction, this is the mechanism for a classic whiplash injury. Most people think of whiplash injuries occurring in a car accident, however they can occur anywhere. Any sudden jolt to the muscles and joints of the spine can result in whiplash. A whiplash injury can certainly occur in a car, or on a roller coa...ster ride, in the surf, during a snow boarding fall or even something as simple as an impact to the head, like knocking your head on a cupboard door can result in whiplash. The interesting thing about whiplash injuries is that the symptoms do not always immediately surface, nor are they always associated with neck pain. Whiplash can result in headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, stiffness, shoulder pain, numbness and tingling in the arms etc. Over time the dysfunction in your neck can result in compromise in other areas of your spine and compensations. The acute symptoms of a whiplash injury may subside after a few days or weeks, but the possible accumulated chronic dysfunction can manifest itself many years later. If you have ever suffered from a whiplash injury, it is a great idea to contact a chiropractor and have your spine and neck alignment assessed.

11.01.2022 The Pillow question: For most of us that get between 6-8 hours of sleep a night, this means that we would spend up to a third of our day lying in bed. This means that by the time we reach the age of 60, we would have spend up to 20 years of our lives on a pillow and mattress. Keeping this in mind, I would say that our choice of pillow and mattress are significantly important. How your neck and head is stabilized by the pillow that you sleep on, will impact how your muscles a...nd body are positioned whether you are lying on your back or on your side. Using the wrong pillow for you can result in restless sleep, neck and back pain, jaw problems and headaches. It is also important to point out here that lying on your tummy is not recommended, as this means your head is in an extreme rotation for prolonged periods of time. Trying to find the right pillow, which is adequately supportive, whilst comfortable is a tricky balance to find and it differs for everyone, since we all have different body shapes and postures. Despite the fact that finding a suitable pillow is not a one size fits all scenario, there are some things to factor in when considering a pillow. Pillow made from hypoallergenic material can contribute to a better nights sleep. A pillow that has a contour can also be of benefit in supporting the natural curvature of the neck when lying on your back and side. The materials used to make the pillow can also affect how much support it will offer, for example a feather pillow in comparison to a memory foam pillow will lose its shape more readily. Pillow, much like most household items need to be changed regularly. They do wear out and they can trap dirt and dust over time. It is a good idea to review your pillow every 24-36 months. If you are waking up feeling unrested, sore or suffering from headaches, it is advisable to chat to your chiropractor about your pillow.

10.01.2022 Suffering From HEADACHES? There are many people that suffer from headaches on a regular basis. What many people dont know is that your headaches may be originating from your NECK! These are referred to as cervicogenic headaches. Causes of cervicogenic headaches: ... - Poor alignment in your neck - Poor posture - Excess muscular tension in the head, neck and shoulders. Studies have shown that those who received chiropractic care for cervicogenic headaches reported having Decreased analgesic use by 36%, Decreased headache duration by 69% Decreased headache intensity by 36%.

07.01.2022 Ever noticed these poor posture habits in your kids? o Head tilt when looking at your child from behind, are their ear lobes level? o Head rotation - is there head turned a little more to one side? o Shoulder tilt. ... o Rounded shoulders o Flat feet. o Turned in toes. o Knocked knees. o Slouchy sitting/ standing posture o Forward head carriage When looking at your child from side on, does their head appear to be further in front than their body? Some causes of poor posture? o School bags if a child is carrying a school bag which is heavier than 5-10 percent of their body weight, this can have a detrimental effect on their posture, causing then to lean too far forward and results in distortion of their sense of their balance and correct upright positioning. o Screen time - The use of electronic devices such as computer games, ipads, iphones and other hand held devices. Kids these days are far less active than they used to be. Gone are they days when entertainment was riding their bicycles, climbing trees and jumping on trampolines. Most children consider play time to be screen time. Not only does screen time mean adopting sedentary postures, it also means slouching on the couch, lying on the bed, slumping into the seat. This reduced physicality also means that children dont develop muscle tone and agility in their muscles and motor execution. It is really important to limit and monitor the amount of screen time kids have. o Car seats and strollers - Long before kids get to the age where hand held devices are a must to be the cool kid at school and kids start carrying their school bags, our babies and infants are strapped into car seats and strollers. When a baby is first born their spine is in a C shape (the foetel position), but as a child develops, the various weight bearing developmental milestones they achieve such as sitting independently, crawling and walking all influence and allow the three correct spinal curves to develop. The spinal curves allows for ideal weight/load bearing, balanced gait (walking cycle) and correct body and spatial awareness. Prolonged use of car seat capsules and poorly designed strollers, interferes with the correct development of these spinal curves.

07.01.2022 Healthy muscles and Joints. Joint mobility and reduced stiffness means a healthy moving body, but if you have loose joints without controlled stability in the joints, this can result in injury. Muscles and joints need to be mobile and lengthened and this can be achieved well by stretching, but sometimes over stretching a joint or muscles can also lead to fibre damage and tearing in muscles. Muscles need strength, endurance and length to be healthy. ... Chiropractic therapy keeps your bones, joints and the muscles healthy.

07.01.2022 Lower back pain, sitting and sciatica Low Back Pain (LBP) has been identified as an important public health problem and it is one of the most expensive health issues dealt with among the working population. It has been identified as one of the leading causes of disability in people who are under the age of 45. Literature cites the following factors in the development of LBP, the chronic nature of back pain and the development of sciatica (sciatica is defined as pain that is... referred from the lower back into the thigh or calf resulting from irritation to the nerves of the lower back). Prolonged sitting periods Heavy physical work Frequent lifting No neutral spinal postures: (trunk rotation, forward bending) Prolonged exposure to whole body vibration sitting in a car for long period of time or truck drivers. If you are someone who sits for a large majority of the day or spends a lot of time driving, or both, you should have a check up with a chiropractor to see if there is anything they can do to help, to keep your spine more healthy and mobile. Your chiropractor may be able to help treat and prevent the further development of lower back pain. Bronfort, G., Haas, M., Evans, R., Leininger, B. and Triano, J. (2010). Effectiveness of manual therapies: The UK evidence report. Chiropractic & Osteopathy; Vol 18:3.

Kids develop, learn and flourish through stimulation from their environment. 04.01.2022 Is your child reaching their developmental milestones? Have you noticed any of the following in your child? Poor fine motor skills e.g. poor hand writing... Poor gross motor function e.g. difficulty with crawling and walking Poor balance and co-ordination An inability to sit still Hyperactivity Poor concentration Difficulty with shape and pattern recognition Difficulty in dealing with loud noises and crowded environments. These can be signs that primitive reflexes are hindering your childs academic and social skills. A chiropractic neurological assessment may determine if the correct developmental milestones have been reached and what can be done to further improve your childs motor function, growth and development.

04.01.2022 Chiropractic For kids From the moment a baby is conceived their environment will shape the way that their nervous system develops. Starting from the in-utero environment of the mothers womb to exposure to many changing environments through life. The more rich the environment is, the more enhanced the development to the nervous system. We have 5 different senses where information from the environment is perceived and interpreted by the nervous system. These senses include si...ght, hearing, smell, taste and touch. When something in the environment stimulates one of these senses, we attend to or respond appropriately to that stimulation. Our responses to sensory stimulation range from very primitive and basic movement patterns that we see in babies to very complex interpretations and responses such as writing or a mathematical calculation which require a raft of sensory signals to be interpreted. The richer this source of stimulation from the environment the more developed our senses become. A consistent lack of one particular type of stimulation will cause the sensory organs to weaken over time. Sufficient firing of these senses is directly dependant on environmental experience. To make a long story short, the more stimulation, the more advanced the babys brain develops. There is one constant force and one constant source of stimulation that the body is always subjected to and this is the force of GRAVITY. The forces of gravity are perceived by our musculoskeletal system and its is by varying the length of our muscles and altering the position of our joints that we can move and orientate ourselves in space as we crawl, walk, run, swim, dance etc through our environment. The spinal system is the most intricate system of muscles and is the foundation of any movement. Think about reaching for a mug out of the cupboard, you need to stabilize your spine and torso first, then your shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers position themselves for you to reach the desired object. So the foundation of all movement comes from your spine. So for us to be able to move in an efficient and co-ordinated manner, the basic underlying structures need to be working well and stabilizing. Not only that, this highly intricate system actually houses all the nerves and nerve pathways that carry the information from our body up to our brains. So if this system is not working well. All the sensory information from the environment that is carried in these nerves can become interrupted or skewed. As chiropractors we make sure the movement in all the spinal joints are as smooth and coordinated as possible to make sure that the foundation of all other movements and postural alignment is optimal!

01.01.2022 Keeping mobile when you have an injury. Keeping mobile when you have an injury. Many moons ago, when someone had a back injury, rest was the solution. However much research has now shown that keeping mobile and active is the better alternative to alleviating back pain and reducing the likelihood of deconditioning. If you do suffer from either acute or chronic pain it is important to modify your activities to minimize the impact of those activities on your spinal health, how...ever complete rest and immobility is no longer the agreed remedy. When we are moving around and keeping our joints mobile and our muscles activated, there is consistent blood flow to the area. When we are still and not moving, the rate of blood flow to an area is reduced. An injured joint is usually coupled with inflammation from the surrounding damaged tissue. A steady blood flow to the area helps to clear the inflammation. In fact bed rest and reduced movement will only exacerbate the inflammatory process because of the limited blood flow to the area. This does not mean that when you have a sore back, you should go and run a half marathon, however going for a swim or a light walk, exercises that are minimal in their load impact are probably a good idea. We are also often told to stretch a sore muscle, stretch to prevent injury and to improve sporting performance. Stretching can certainly help in some circumstances, but it is also not so beneficial in other circumstances. Some studies have indicated that over stretching can cause joint laxity and possibly even cause further inflammation. It is actually your level of general fitness, rather than pre-stretching, that is a major factor in injury prevention (Ingraham, 2003). For those of us that use stretching to improve athletic performance and reducing injury, perhaps stretching is more beneficial for some activities versus others. Those activities that require increased flexibility, such as gymnastic, dancing or diving, have been shown to benefit from pre-exercise stretching in contrast to sports such as jogging or cycling where there has been no benefit shown with stretching alone. In fact increased stiffness has been shown to increase strength in some sports (Gremion, 2005). Stretching in combination with warm up exercises that are similar in nature to the sport or exercise that you are about to begin, to increase blood flow to the muscles and get the joints moving is an entirely different story.
