24.01.2022 NeuroMoves prides itself on promoting innovative technology, and we can now add lasers to our repertoire! Andrea is using motion guided lasers to provide a visual cue to help train her balance. This system projects a laser from her hips, onto a target to give real-time feedback of her stability during various standing tasks. Andrea has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) which impacts her sense of balance and muscle strength. The accurate visual feedback from these lasers helps her to ...correct her posture more effectively and to see her improvements. What fun activities or strategies do you use to help improve your balance?

11.01.2022 One of Brett's goals is to improve his fine motor skills, so it is easier for him to use a knife and fork. What better way to train than to challenge his therapist to a game of Connect 4 while he get his standing time up in the Evolv standing frame? Brett has Wernicke's Syndrome, in which a vitamin deficiency leads to damage to nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, affecting his muscle coordination. It is important for Brett to train his coordination regularly, so our N...euroMoves team get creative to keep Brett moving! Great work Brett!

11.01.2022 NeuroMoves St Peters have been giving their new assault bike a workout! This new piece of equipment was made possible through the generous funds raised as part of our Be A Hero fundraiser in 2020. Arnel has a form of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALD) which is a very rare neurological disorder leading to progressive muscle weakness. He likes to work on maximising his strength and fitness during his NeuroMoves sessions, and the assault bik...e really gets his blood pumping! This is important for Arnel, as he has his work cut out for him as a full time grandparent! Keep up the hard work!

07.01.2022 NeuroMoves Penrith client, Lisa, recently walked unaided and unassisted for the first time since her diagnosis! Lisa has Transverse Myelitis, which is a rare condition where the outside coating of the spinal cord (myelin) becomes inflamed, leading to paralysis and loss of sensation. She started participating in our Functional Electric Stimulation (FES) program in September 2020 to improve the strength in her leg and then undertook our Activity-Based Therapy (ABT) program in February 2021, where she has continued to impress her therapists and further improve her mobility. Great work Lisa!

05.01.2022 NeuroMoves Lismore client, Troy, is 20 sessions into our most intensive program, Locomotor Training (LT). Troy has a complete spinal cord injury, so wasn't sure if he would see many benefits from this program initially. To Troy's delight, he has noticed significant improvements in his core muscle activation and control, which has improved his transfers and his ability to remain balanced when sitting unsupported. Troy has really enjoyed the whole experience and he is already planning when he can do his next bout of LT!

05.01.2022 It is well known that exercise is an important part of life for everybody, however it becomes a necessity for long-term wheelchair users. Shoulder pain is reported in 67% of all wheelchair users, with only 8% reporting issues prior to their injury (Curtin et al, 2017). This is largely a result of the increased demand on the shoulders for all daily tasks and mobility needs, which is a job they are not designed for. NeuroMoves Melbourne client, Bianca, uses a combination of different programs to help her improve her posture and upper body strength. Bianca has a spinal cord injury, so keeping her shoulders healthy is vital for maintaining her independence. Great form, Bianca!

We look forward to seeing you there!

04.01.2022 We would like to celebrate one of our long term clients, Lach, who has been attending NeuroMoves Perth since 2014! Lach is currently working on improving his transfer skills, as he works toward his goal of performing this independently! He's also one of SCIA's Peer and Family Support team members in Perth, and he helps run our Perth CHOICES short term accommodation. Our short term, accessible accommodation helps individuals with an SCI prepare them for life at home after a... spinal cord injury. It is so fantastic to see Lach using his first-hand experience of living with a spinal cord injury, to assist others in the same situation. If you want to know more about our Peer and Family Support Team and our Accessible Accommodation head to https://scia.org.au/

03.01.2022 Today is World MS Day, which aims to raise awareness for those affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Today, we would like to debunk a common myth that exercise exacerbates fatigue symptoms for individuals with MS. The highest level of scientific evidence (Cochrane Systematic Review) , indicates that exercise is an effective treatment of fatigue in people with MS, and is safe in terms of reported MS relapses (Heine et al, 2015). Therese finds her regular sessions at NeuroMove...s Menai give her energy to maintain her independence for tasks such as eating, and using her power wheelchair. Attending NeuroMoves also gives Therese an opportunity to talk to people in a similar position as her, and to make new friends. Comment below to see how we can help you or your loved ones with their MS related fatigue, or to find a fun new social outlet, like Therese!

03.01.2022 NeuroMoves Menai have some brand new equipment to show off following our very successful 'Be A Hero' fundraising event in 2020! Ian is using the Total Gym (TG) to improve his lower limb strength following recent hip replacement surgery, as he works towards his long-term goal of improving his walking technique. Ian also has a spinal cord injury, which has caused changes to his normal walking pattern, and has likely contributed to wearing out of his hip joints. It is important for Ian to have access to specialised equipment that allows him to safely progress towards his goals under the guidance of NeuroMoves expert therapists. Great job, Ian!

01.01.2022 Sandy is one of NeuroMoves Canberra's most active clients! After moving to Canberra, Sandy decided to take up rowing, as the repetitive movements and focus on timing would help improve her coordination. This was important for her after she was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia in 2009, which primarily impacts her coordination and balance. Sandy recently decided to challenge herself further by taking up Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) boarding in one of Canberra's many pristine waterways, using her NeuroMoves sessions to coordinate her paddling while maintaining her balance. NeuroMoves therapists are always finding creative and innovative ideas to help our clients reach their goals!
