25.01.2022 Pause for Parkinson's Sunday was International Parkinson's awareness day and the whole month of April is awareness month, with this year's focus around IMPACT. I- Innovation for Parkinson's Research... M- Mission to find a cure for Parkinson's Disease P- Parkinson's, a vision of a world without it A- Awareness for the individuals living with PD C- Collaboration. Working on the collaboration between professionals to raise awareness and manage PD T- Treatments for slowing the progression of PD Parkinson's Disease is a neurodegenerative condition that can be so detrimental to one's movements, and affect many domains in life from interactions with others, access, communication, bowel and bladder function etc. This is why it is important to share awareness so we can continue to work towards research and enhancing our treatment for PD! There are some great resources out there for individuals affected by Parkinson's or for those who would like to learn more, check out: - https://www.parkinsonssa.org.au/ - https://www.parkinsons.org.au/ - https://shakeitup.org.au/

25.01.2022 Head over to dementiaallianceinternational.org to hear James break down the stigma around Dementia and discuss the importance of gait retraining and individualised rehabilitation programs for individuals living with Dementia.

24.01.2022 Recently our wonderful client Nicholas has conquered a lifelong fear, by commencing immersion therapy with Determined 2! Nicholas hasn't been in a swimming pool since he was in primary school, due to a near drowning experience! He has already progressed outstandingly, and with the guidance of his Immersion Therapy Specialist, James Martin, was able to be submerged in his first in-pool session! Nicholas uses the immersion therapy to help combat the secondary complications of his Parkinsons' disease, and is always keen to push himself further physically in his on-land physiotherapy sessions with our neurophysiotherapist Rebecca. Nicholas is very proud of his achievement, and we certainly are too!

20.01.2022 Visual Search Strategies in Neurological Rehabilitation Many neurological conditions result in impairments affecting our movement planning, body awareness, reactions and balance, resulting in impaired movement patterns, delayed responses when we're unbalanced or even increased attention to produce simple movements like reaching. These impairments could be mild and hardly noticeable, or they could be significant and limit you from participating in activities you use to enjo...y like bowling, playing football, cooking etc. Visual search strategies are tasks we often practice with a majority of our clients, including individuals who are diagnosed with; Stroke Brain Injury Parkinson's Disease Concussion Spinal cord injury This form of exercise is a great way to promote fast eye movements or peripheral awareness to assist with balance, improve spatial awareness, improve movement planning and increase speed of reactive stepping (important for balance). Take a look at Liz demonstrating (and commenting) how you can work on reactive stepping as well as high level balance and reaching work. With our BlazePod we have numerous programs we can use and an app to record your reaction times to monitor your improvement!

20.01.2022 Manage Myositis This May! May is Myositis awareness month, and a great opportunity to reflect and perhaps learn about a complex condition and specific management strategies. Myositis is actually the term given to a group of different inflammatory conditions that affects muscles throughout the body. The inflammation itself can weaken muscles, however prolonged inflammation can result in significant damage to muscle tissue including in your limbs, trunk or even the heart and re...spiratory (breathing) muscles. There are various forms of Myositis that have different clinical presentations and mechanisms- this is important to note as therapy also differentiates based on the type of myositis. An example maybe that someone with Polymyositis may need to focus on trunk control and core strength to improve their balance, however, someone with Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM) usually will exhibit weakness in thighs (quadriceps),ankles (dorsiflexors) or forearms (flexor digitorum profundus) so we may have to consider these muscles and develop different movement strategies for them. Considering fatigue is a common issue, we may even create programs that work on strengthening and fitness, however that also include recovery time to prevent fatigue and dysfunction. As Neuro Physios, we also may prescribe walking aids if necessary or perhaps even arrange a referral to a speech pathologist if muscles around the throat have been affected. A common misconception and prior belief was that exercise could be detrimental and damaging to individuals with Myositis, however contemporary research has found specialised exercise to be safe and extremely beneficial! When managing Myositis, we recommend you start with the following; - Discuss with your health care professional the type of myositis (In previous years, testing didn't exist for many of the sub categories, however, now they exist so individuals can be re tested and re categorised if necessary) - Ensure you are in touch with a support network such as The Myositis Association for events, information and support. - Organise a detailed assessment with a neuro physio for specific guidance based on your presentation and goals - Keep in touch with the registry for clinical trials if interested. Myositis awareness is slowly increasing leading to more research behind the cause and pharmaceutical treatments. For any queries or questions, contact us at [email protected] or 8363 0458 for a detailed neuro physio assessment. Team ANR

20.01.2022 CONCUSSION BASELINE SCREENINGS Did you know that concussions can be partly managed before they even occur? Sounds strange right?... but what we mean is we can identify possible factors that may lead to increased risk of concussion as well as risks of prolonged outcomes if you do happen to get concussed.... A couple of weeks ago, ANR's Liz & James were busy conducting these baseline assessments with the Redbacks and Scorpion cricket squads, to help establish clear baseline assessments of the multiple domains that can be impacted by concussion. Concussions are extremely complex injuries and generally involve not only the neck, but also the vestibular system (inner ear), the autonomic system (automated control system involved in blood flow to the brain, sleeping etc.) and are classified as a mild traumatic brain injury. At ANR we are all across the latest management guidelines of concussion, and with our experience in neurological and vestibular conditions, it makes our assessments extremely thorough! If you engage in contact sports, or even have a history of headaches, dizziness or migraines, you could benefit from one of our baseline screening assessments. Contact us on 8363 0458 or [email protected] to learn more, or book in for a baseline concussion screening today.

20.01.2022 National Careers Week For National Careers week we want to talk about what it means to be a Neurological Physiotherapist. Neuro physio isn't a field of work that we just found ourselves in, it's a field that, for most of us, when we were studying physiotherapy we realised it was something we wanted to be a part of- so what was the appeal? We asked some of our team what they enjoy about their role as a neuro physio:... "I was drawn to neuro physio because the brain and it's impairments are so interesting. Then I realised that helping people with a neurological condition is very rewarding, and i've loved it ever since!" - Beck (Physiotherapist) "I have always loved problem solving, so what better career path to choose than working with the most complex, multifaceted structure we know- the brain. Neurological physiotherapy is such a new, evolving and exciting field to be a part of! You usually work with clients for longer periods of time too and get to know them, so when you see them achieve first steps, returning to their favourite sport or getting them strong enough again to hold their new little niece, it's the most rewarding feeling in the world." - Liz (Physiotherapist) "I wanted to be a neuro physio as my Grandfather suffered a Stroke and I saw first hand the impact that it had on him and everyone around him. Our loves were all changed in a moment and I witnessed how physio helped him. For me being a neuro physio means that everyday I get to come to work and help people to live their best lives." -Vanessa (Physiotherapist) Aside from providing various forms of physical therapy to individuals with neurological or vestibular conditions; we also have a role in collaborating with other health professionals, attending case conferences, prescribing equipment and coordinating the care of clients sometimes. If you have any questions about our role, give us a call! Education is key, so the more we can spread the word about the importance of neuro physio, hopefully the more people can access the care they may need!

20.01.2022 Next week is National Stroke Week Our Director, James McLoughlin spoke with Sonya Feldhoff on ABC Radio yesterday about the importance of stroke awareness & stroke recovery. Have a listen at the 2:02:50 mark..... https://www.abc.net.au//pro/afternoons/afternoons/12581060

19.01.2022 Dementia Awareness Week Dementia is the largest cause of disability in individuals aged over 65, with 30% of individuals over 80 diagnosed. Historically, rehabilitation and Dementia were terms that would not often go hand in hand. So let's discuss perhaps what has led to potential stigma around Dementia and rehab and investigate what the benefits of rehabilitation are in this certain population. ... Individuals with Dementia and their families have often reported a lack of support and services available (Cations et al., 2019). Kate Swaffer (2015) introduced the term 'Prescribed Disengagement' as a process that followed the diagnosis of dementia, including health care providers advising patients and their families to prepare for deterioration and what felt like preparing to "give up". This would be extremely dis-empowering, lowers confidence and takes away hope of a positive future - Thankfully, as awareness grows for dementia, the model is shifting and the push for rehabilitation is becoming more common. Recent evidence has found significant benefits of multidimensional rehabilitation in dementia. So how can neuro physiotherapy assist in the management of dementia; - Identifying accurate goals with the client with ongoing adaptation as well as providing families and support workers with adequate strategies. - Physical therapy has been found to reduce cognitive decline associated with dementia, especially aerobic exercise - Education to family members and support workers regarding the management of dementia as well as long term planning - Work on individual factors that may be contributing to higher falls risks - Specific exercises can improve mood, health, and even neuroplasticity. This could include gait retraining as ANR's Associate Professor James McLoughlin explains below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pcu2Y7VcFf8&feature=youtu.be For more information; See Kate Swaffers website which is a great resource- http://kateswaffer.com/ as well as the Dementia Alliance International https://www.dementiaallianceinternational.org/ Or feel free to contact our neuro physiotherapy team on 8363 0458. 19.01.2022 Orthoptists in Rehabilitation What are Orthoptists and why are they relevant in neuro physiotherapy? On Monday, the ANR team were fortunate enough to have Tania Straga from Adelaide Eye Therapycome and speak to us about her work as an Orthoptist. ... Orthoptists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of eye movement deficiencies and assess how our eyes are working together, known as binocular vision. Eye movement deficits can occur as a result of neurological conditions like Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Concussion. These movement deficits can be detrimental and consequently lead to symptoms like double vision, dizziness, headaches and impaired mobility- exactly why we need to ensure your eyes are moving correctly! What is the difference between Orthoptists and Ophthalmologists and Optometrists? There are so many eye specialists it can be confusing in knowing who is appropriate to see if you’re experiencing visual issues. Opthamologists are trained doctors that specialise in eye care including diagnosis, medical and surgical management of problems within the eye. Optometrists are again a different specialty- they are primary care providers that mainly focus on prescribing glasses/ contacts and treat various eye conditions. The human body is a complex and intertwined system so it is important that as health professionals we consider the bigger picture, this is where it is important as neuro physios to understand when we may need to refer a client to a health professional such as an orthoptist. Numerous neurological conditions can affect the part of the brain that controls eye movements. This might mean that the eyes have difficulty transitioning between focusing on things far and close, following moving objects, reduced clarity with vision or even have limited range in their movement- the list goes on and gets extremely complex as we learnt from Tania. As physios- we understand how important eye function is for balance, orientation, feedback and learning and even predicting movement or executing simple tasks like bringing a spoon to our mouth, this is why we need to know when our clients may need a referral to someone like Tania! Thanks to Tania for all of her knowledge and enthusiasm in all things eyes and letting us play with your gadgets (we had a lot of fun!) Team ANR

17.01.2022 Nothing like some team bonding whilst getting a sweat on! Thanks so much to @f45_training_prospect for having us and @physiosmart_sa and certainly putting us through our paces!

15.01.2022 Stroke and Aphasia Communication is essential for our functioning and interactions with others, so what happens when the part of the brain that allows this to happen, is impacted by Stroke? Aphasia is a common communication deficit that can occur following stroke and is characterised by difficulty understanding or producing language. These difficulties in language typically develop if certain regions of the brain (Wernickes or Brocas areas) have been affected. ... People with aphasia may have difficulty with; Understanding jokes Participate in a conversation with friends and family Using money Verbalising what they may need It is important to remember the difficulties these individuals may face as we may need to adapt the way we communicate or develop strategies to help. If individuals experience aphasia, they may work with a speech pathologist and work on specific techniques, exercises or use certain aids or devices to help them communicate. This picture by Australian Aphasia Association is a great depiction on the social difficulties an individual with Aphasia May face. Working as neuro physios, we strongly believe in a transdisciplinary approach- this means we may use aids the speech therapists prescribe in our physiotherapy sessions, have joint sessions incorporating speech therapy exercises in our therapy sessions, or we may even get our clients counting etc. during sets of exercise! It is so important as therapists to understand the WHOLE clinical picture with our clients, rather than just the area we work with, it ensures that we can work collaboratively toward their goals and optimise their recovery and quality of life! Contact ANR on 8363 0458 or [email protected] for any questions or if you require assistance recovering from a stroke. Team ANR

15.01.2022 HYDROTHERAPY Hydrotherapy or aquatic based therapy is a type of physical therapy that takes part in the water. At ANR we are strong advocates for engaging our clients in hydrotherapy simply because of the extensive list of benefits; - The warmth and antigravity effect of the water can help in managing spasticity and muscle tone... - Provides an opportunity for exercises that may be unachievable outside of the water ie. standing, jogging, jumping, lifting arms etc - Exercises can improve mobility and reduce risk of joint contractures - Safe environment for low impact and cardiorespiratory fitness training - Fun, engaging and social way to incorporate therapy into your rehab journey! Our Physiotherapists are available to provide 1:1 hydrotherapy sessions at community pools. Selected pools have access ramps and aqua chairs as well as lifters for ease of transfers. We have also run weekly group hydrotherapy classes through the Muscular Dystrophy Association, however due to Covid-19 restrictions, these classes are currently on hold. Hydrotherapy is suitable for many conditions including; - Spinal Cord Injury - Brain Injury - Stroke - Cerebral Palsy - Muscular Dystrophy and many more If you need any more information, please don't hesitate to contact the clinic on 8363 0458. 15.01.2022 Tai Chi & Neuro physio Tai chi is a form of exercise we can use at ANR for various neurological conditions to incorporate body awareness and mindfulness with strength and balance retraining Tai chi was originally a Chinese martial art that focused on slow, flowing sequences of mindful movements, however in recent years, the benefits of the slow and controlled movements have been utilised in rehabilitation.... The great thing about this form of therapy is that it can be catered for all levels of ability and mobility i.e can be completed whilst standing or sitting. Tai chi is a great way to improve; - Balance - Strength - Confidence - Mindfulness and relaxation - Breathing Technique - Falls prevention We are lucky enough to have Beck apart of the ANR team with experience teaching Tai chi in the neurological population. Here is a snippet of some work we did, focusing on weight shift, rotation and balance!

13.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE Following the latest COVID-19 announcements, we have some updates that will be implemented across the ANR clinics to ensure the safety of both our clients and staff. We are now required to have a Covid safe plan involving some new protocols that will have to be followed by staff, clients and care staff/ family. Team work is nothing new to us, so let's all pitch in to keep our community safe!... The following actions will be commencing as of the 1st December: - Staff, clients and all visitors will be required to fill out a contract tracing form available via a QR code scanned by your phone on arrival to the clinic. The code is printed off and on the front door as well as at the front counters. We ask you to show the receptionists a copy of your check in that will display on your phone. - All staff and visitors will be required to wear a mask for appointments, we will have masks available if you require (exemptions for special circumstances apply) - Staff will continue with diligently maintaining hygiene through hand washing, hand sanitisation, plinth sanitisation and pillow case changes. - Temperatures will be checked on entry - We ask you to wait in your car until your appointment time, unless you are a new patient, in this case you will be required to come in 5 minutes earlier to fill out paperwork - We ask you to continue social distancing whilst waiting in the waiting room (white lines will be marked 1.5m apart) - Staff will all be trained in Covid Marshal training Thank you for your compliance over this time, we understand it has been challenging with the changes, however, it is a great opportunity to unite as a state to move forward. Team ANR

13.01.2022 TEAM WORK What does team work mean to us? On Sunday it meant joining this legend on his 2nd ride back and letting him put us through our paces! Frank has been so determined on his journey back to cycling, with smaller goals paving the way to this very point! ... This is exactly why listening to what matters to our clients is so important, so we can help them work towards the activities they genuinely love. For some individuals, it may mean they can return to socialising with their mates again, compete competitively again it may mean they can play with their children again, regardless of what it is, we are there to support you the entire way!

13.01.2022 Six ways to stay healthy over the next 6 days of isolation We understand that the recent lockdown has come as a shock for those in South Australia, however we want to remind you all, that we are in this together to keep our state safe and to get back to normal ASAP. For those unaware, physiotherapy clinics have also been forced into closure, so we wanted to set you a challenge over the next 6 days, to keep your body and mind healthy and happy.... Over the next 6 days, we challenge you to the #circuitbreakerchallenge 1) Facetime or call at least one friend or family member each day. You could arrange a group quiz via zoom, share a coffee over facetime or exchange a podcast you've been loving lately! 2) Move every day. This might include following your physio's exercise program, finding an online pre-recorded yoga or pilates class, gardening, or trying a new activity with a housemate/ support worker. 3) Make the most of your trip to the supermarket and try a new recipe! Dig out some old recipe books or google some healthy recipes to keep you and your household happy! 4) Rest & Breathe. Make the most of this down time, download a meditation app and try switching off, once a day. You could even journal or even spend some time goal setting. 5) Organise an exercise class with a friend. One day, one person is in charge of choosing exercises, try an interval timer app and connect via zoom to demonstrate the exercises to your pals! 6) Organise cupboards, settle into an old school movie or try a new hobby- painting, redecorating. The ANR team knows some of our physios like to kick back and relax in their down time, whilst others love to keep busy (Liz!) so take your pick to what suits you. If you are a part of the ANR community, feel free to email your physiotherapist to confirm exercise programs, and remember we are still available for telehealth consultations! Stay safe.

12.01.2022 It's World Parkinson's Day! http://advancedneurorehab.com.au//neurological-physiother/

12.01.2022 Today we are celebrating International Day of People with Disabilities #internationaldisabilityday Every day at ANR we are constantly inspired by the incredibly driven and hard working clients with disabilities that we are fortunate enough to work alongside with. As neurological physiotherapists, we also see what challenges may arise for our clients, and for that reason, we believe in advocating for people with disabilities to increase awareness, start conversations and brea...k down associated stigma. The aim of the IDPwD is to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of those with a disability whilst also celebrating their accomplishments. The theme this year is "Building Back Better: toward a disability- inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world". Following on from this theme, we want to open up discussion for any ideas on how the ANR community can continue to move forward post COVID-19 in a disability- inclusive way. At ANR we like to celebrate our clients achievements and acknowledge their contributions to our community, so here are some strategies we are implementing to ensure we can continue to provide a disability- inclusive service into 2021; - Designing small class sizes for individuals with specific neurological classes that adhere to social distancing rules. This is a safe way we can ensure we can continue to provide accessible classes for individuals with specific needs, all whilst having fun and providing a great social atmosphere (all whilst socially distancing and staying safe) - Our physiotherapists are experienced in working with individuals that may have difficulty communicating or accessing regular physiotherapy. We use different forms of teaching to help you maintain your exercise programs at home including video recordings, designing carer support programs to help with exercises, modifying exercises to suit you or your living arrangements. - We understand that accessing physiotherapy in these times can be a daunting process with fear associated with COVID-19. For this reason, we have also arranged for our clinic to offer telehealth appointments. This way, if you wish to still seek advice or even go through a guided exercise program, the physiotherapists can provide you with help using a phone or computer for a video call. This way you can still have access to our physios from the comfort of your own home. Following on from this theme, we want to open up discussion for any ideas on how the ANR community can continue to move forward post COVID-19 in a disability- inclusive way! We would love you to get involved, so please send through any suggestions to [email protected] to get the ball rolling towards an inclusive 2021!

11.01.2022 Goal Setting in Rehabilitation The new year is flying by, and if you haven't already set yourself some rehab goals for 2021, now is the time! Establishing long term goals for yourself or individuals you may be caring for in rehabilitation can be difficult for many reasons including;... - Uncertainty with prognosis of your condition - Unsure of realistic outcomes - Limited access to resources/ supports at home - Difficulty staying motivated Although this process can be a difficult one, it can be made easier if you collaboratively discuss and plan with your care team. The Neuro physios at ANR have experience in rehab processes, the use of outcome measures to track your progress and can cater your rehab program to specifically target the functional goals you want to work towards. Collaborative therapy is so important in ensuring your rehab is targeting what is important to you to optimise your outcomes. In our Physio sessions we start with working with you to set long term goals and further break these goals down into short term goals. We then may take baseline outcome measures so we can quantify your starting level and track changes easily. Goal setting may even take us out of the clinic, depending on your goals. If you want to learn how to access and your pool and return to swimming, we may target hydrotherapy, if you want to build up your confidence to tackle the stairs to your seat at Adelaide oval for a footy game, we might head out to the community for some stair climbing practice- the list goes on! Check out this throwback to when Frank's physios ventured out for a team ride to support Frank in his first time back cycling in 2 years, the guys clearly had some fun - teamwork makes the dream work! For any further information around appointments or if you feel you could benefit from some goal setting with one of our physiotherapists, give us a call- 8363 0458 or email [email protected] Start 2021 right!

11.01.2022 Spinal Cord Injuries and Trans-disciplinary Care The spinal cord is an extremely important structure that is located in a canal, protected by our spinal column. The spinal cord transmits messages to and from our brain to our limbs, organs and skin with different nerves exiting at different levels of the spinal column. Depending on what level of your spinal cord is injured and the type of injury you have (complete, incomplete), the deficits you are left with can be extremely ...variable! Although we are more aware of SCI resulting in muscle weakness or sensation loss, it is important we also recognise other functional impairments someone with a SCI may experience: - Neuropathic pain - Bladder or bowel dysfunction - Changes to sexual function - Spasticity - Changes to work, school, participation in sports etc. The implications of SCI are vast and affect all domains of life which is why when managing a SCI, a transdisciplinary approach is recommended. This means that various health professionals work collaboratively to cover all aspects and integrate therapies to work together. This may include a Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Exercise Physiologist, continence nurse, psychologist etc. At ANR, our neuro physios like to establish communication and work collaboratively with other health professionals to ensure this transdisciplinary approach; this may include organising conference calls, telehealth appointments, joint sessions (seating consultations, home visits etc) or regular correspondence to update other team members on our clients progress and goals. If you, or anyone you know is living with a Spinal Cord Injury, reach out to our team at ANR for advice or to arrange an appointment today! 8363 0458 [email protected]

08.01.2022 EXERCISE CLASSES FOR MS We all know that exercise is good for us but did you know that it’s particularly important for the management of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).... MS is a neurological condition that results in weakness, muscle tightness, fatigue, vestibular impairments and pain due to damage/scarring to tissue in the brain or spinal cord. Due to the high levels of pain, fatigue and heat sensitivity associated with MS, it makes participation in exercise particularly difficult. BUT EXERCISE WITH MS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. At the ANR clinic we are excited to announce we have commenced specialized exercise classes for individuals with MS! WHY? Exercise has been shown to benefit those with MS through improvements in: muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance, fatigue, spasticity, pain and cognitive function. Recent evidence also suggests that exercise may have the potential to slow the progression of MS!! HOW? Interval based training can be one of the best ways to exercise with MS. The short work and rest cycles help to combat neuromuscular fatigue, reduces the heating effects of exercise, and allows for more strength gains. This means that you can achieve better quality exercise for longer and achieve greater outcomes. WHERE? Jess has just started up MS specific group classes at ANR. These incorporate interval-based exercise, movement retraining and education to help fight back against MS. They’re also the perfect introduction to exercise if you’re unsure how to get started with great tunes and a supportive class to keep you motivated! To express your interest and discuss your eligibility for these classes next year, chat to your physio or call 8363 0458!

07.01.2022 MIGRAINE AWARENESS WEEK Migraine is a neurological condition that can often result in a headache type pain as well as numerous and variable sensitivities. 15% of the population are affected by migraine at one stage in their life and symptoms between individuals can't vary, some individuals may experience; - Sensitivity to light or noise - Dizziness or Nausea... - Fatigue - Changes in mood - Yawning As well as many more. There are medications to aid in the management of migraines, however neuro physiotherapy has an important role in education, pain relief and even the management of potential triggers including your neck or vestibular system. It is so important in recognizing the behaviour of YOUR migraine, so we would recommend some of the following tips: - Keeping a migraine diary (check out migrainetrust.org OR headacheaustralia.org.au) - Download a migraine monitoring app like Migraine Buddy - Monitor energy and fatigue levels to avoid over sensitisation and a possible trigger to your migraine - If you experience neck pain, or other visual symptoms or dizziness, come and see one of the physios at ANR for a neck and vestibular assessment that may be contributing to your migraines. 06.01.2022 The Importance of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and Balance FND awareness month is rapidly coming to a close; and with our current climate and perhaps changes to your usual routine, we thought we would discuss the importance of self-management and balance with symptoms associated with FND. If you, or somebody you know has been diagnosed with FND you may be familiar with the uncertainty, confusion and impairments that usually coincide with this neurological condition.... FND is a complex, multi factorial condition that arises when your nervous system stops function properly and has trouble sending/ receiving information. Although investigations may not reveal structural damage; symptoms are real, diverse and may include; - Paralysis - Balance issues - Speech changes - Changes in cognition - Involuntary movements The severity and behaviour of symptoms can vastly fluctuate between individuals. FND can also be extremely stressful and emotionally taxing; this is why in times like these, self-management strategies are so important! It is imperative to understand that symptoms and how you are feeling may fluctuate from day to day and some days may be better than others. This is why finding balance and adapting your day is beneficial in preservation, recovery and optimising your quality of life. If you think of your daily energy level like a battery; it may be easier to understand that you can not perform or function if you have drained all of your energy, you would have to wait for it to recharge. This may mean that amongst doing activities like working, playing with your children or exercises is broken up with adequate rest breaks or you schedule exercises and recovery on alternating days. This also means that it is okay if you are feeling fatigued, that you may not be able to do the same level of activity that you had achieved the previous day. You must listen to your body and allow yourself to adapt your activity levels based on how you are feeling. This also includes establishing your baseline. Your baseline is the amount of activity you can manage to do, even on your off days. Establishing a baseline is important in making you stay consistently active rather than burning out and stopping all activity. Finding your baseline can be hard; however, as part of neuro physiotherapy, we can discuss your daily routine and goals and perform certain assessments to help optimise your recovery. Neuro physiotherapy for FND also includes specific treatment principles we can help you apply in your own home exercise program and daily routine. Neurological Physiotherapists at ANR have a strong interest and a long history of working with people with FND, so for further questions, feel free to contact us at [email protected]. Team ANR

05.01.2022 May has arrived.... which means it is time for #themay50k! If you're not familiar with the may50k, it is an incredible initiative and fundraiser aimed at raising money and awareness for research around Multiple Sclerosis. As neuro physios, at ANR, we work regularly with people with MS and are constantly blown away by their resilience, motivation and hard working nature... so much so, we want to support them through raising awareness and funds to help contribute to the phenom...enal research currently undertaken by MS Research Australia. The team at ANR are getting their running shoes on, and individually tackling upwards of 50kms each during the month of May to individually challenge ourselves and push our limits (as we so often do with our patients!) Please, please, please spend this time to check out the link to educate and inform yourself about Multiple Sclerosis and read some of the incredible stories about inspiring people, we (fortunately) get to spend our days working alongside! We understand the current climate can be financially stressful, however, if you do have the capacity, you can donate to our team page, towards a great cause: https://www.themay50k.org/fundraisers/advancedneurorehab Wish us luck! Team ANR

05.01.2022 EDUCATION IN REHABILITATION At ANR we love to learn, try new things and stay updated with the latest evidence, and therapy options for neurological and vestibular conditions. Neurological rehabilitation is constantly evolving and we are dedicated to providing the best quality of care, so we are huge advocates for ongoing learning in this complex field of work. Our director and Associate Professor James McLoughlin is also involved in the development of the Masters of Clinical... Rehabilitation program at Flinders University. James' involvement in post graduate education fosters an educational environment at the ANR clinic where we set aside time for in house professional development, share articles and discuss case studies. We also have numerous staff members that have undergone post graduate studies in neurological physiotherapy involving research, as well as attending numerous educational courses that are presented throughout the year. Recently we have been discussing - Assessment and treatment ideas for knee instability - Gait Analysis and motor patterning - Exercise prescription in Multiple Sclerosis - The importance of subjective screenings in concussion The education doesn't stop with us though. At ANR we are advocates for educating our clients or support team to empower them in their rehabilitation journey. If you ever have any questions regarding your condition or rehabilitation, don't hesitate to ask! Team ANR

05.01.2022 WE CAN ALL BE F.A.S.T HEROES Its National Stroke Week, and a great opportunity to promote awareness and prevention of stroke. This year, the Stroke Foundation is celebrating Australians who know and recognise the signs of stroke - F.A.S.T. heroes ... F: Has their Face dropped? A: Can they lift both their Arms? S: Is their Speech slurred, and do they understand you? T: Call 000, Time is critical If you can recognise these signs, you too can be a F.A.S.T hero and save lives. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in Australia. This year, more than 56,000 strokes will be experienced by Australians, and more than 475,000 Australians are currently living with the effects of stroke. Find out how you can help here: https://strokefoundation.org.au/How-you-can-help We know that early intervention is important in stroke recovery, so as neuro physiotherapists, we want to assess you as soon as possible to optimise your outcomes and get you moving! Neurological physiotherapy for stroke may include; improving your mobility, treating or managing shoulder pain, improving upper limb function and keeping you physically active. These are all extremely important for your health and wellbeing as well as preventative measures for secondary issues that could arise. At ANR, we recognise that everyone's situation, impairments and goals are completely different, which is why we believe it is so important to work as a team during your rehabilitation journey! If you have any queries or questions regarding stroke and rehabilitation, please contact [email protected]

04.01.2022 INTENSITY IS NON NEGOTIABLE In Parkinson's Disease, Bradykinesia is the characteristic slow, sluggish movements that occur due to impairments to our autopilot system. This is a key reason why Force, Effort and Speed are exaggerated in PD exercises; we want you working at 80% to upscale your movements and fight this slow movement pattern we commonly see! This is why we use exercises like this goodie to promote: - Force behind movement - Active pauses - Focus on key elements (...i.e outstretched fingers) This is a great example of an exercise we could prescribe for individuals having difficulty with slow arm movements or difficulty coordinating reaching tasks! P.s Our resident PD guru Eileen, showing some great form! See more

03.01.2022 Its all in the eyes Did you know that the way your eyes move and behave can be affected by your vestibular system (inner ear), your neck or other neurological conditions (including migraine and concussion)! This is why we conduct specific testing called a 'vestibular ocular motor' screening! We assess the way your eyes and head move and cooperate and this often gives us answers as to why you may be experiencing certain symptoms.... Changes in the behaviour of your eye and head movements may result in symptoms like dizziness, double vision, headaches, nausea etc. Because of the relationship between the eyes and other systems like your neck or inner ear, sometimes we will prescribe eye exercises to improve the function of the other systems! Here's a throwback to a staff development session where we focused specifically on visual assessments, and observing James' positive right eye skew test!

03.01.2022 DIZZINESS AND FALLS Dizziness is a common word we hear at ANR and we want to chat about one reason why it can be so important to get it assessed by a neurological Physiotherapist. Dizziness is a word used to describe a feeling of being unsteady, spinny, light headed, disconnected, foggy... the list goes on! Aside from the uncomfortable sensation it makes you feel, dizziness can be closely related to falls which is why we want to assess and manage it ASAP!... Falls can happen at any age, however statistics from 2018 found 75% of hospital admissions for women over 65 was from falls; with 33% of the total number of falls in the broader population being from stumbling, tripping or slipping (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2019). Dizziness can be caused from many sources (inner ear, medications, neck etc.) and with a specific assessment we can start to work out from your story and our objective tests what is likely causing your symptoms. The inner ear (vestibular system) is specifically problematic and has been directly linked to falls; with people that have deficits, having a 12-fold risk of falling (Agrawal et al., 2009) ! First we commence a specific assessment, then we can then develop a management plan including treatment, exercises and referral if necessary, to help manage your dizziness and subsequently reduce your risk of falls and secondary issues like anxiety, reduced mobility, joint stiffness, neck pain and headaches. Here is Liz demonstrating how we could vary some balance/ functional exercises using different surfaces, closing eyes (can you tell when she closes hers?) or foot positioning to work on your balance. 03.01.2022 Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week 2020 This year the focus around Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week is "Accessibility equals opportunity". Individual's with a spinal cord injury often have impairments with mobility, resulting in them requiring a wheelchair or some form of assistance when getting around at home or the community. Accessing venues in the community may include considering if there are steps/ ramps, an accessible bathroom, width of doorways, space inside as well... as many other factors. Aside from these physical considerations, it is important for this information to be easily accessible and comprehensive to make planning and attending outings as convenient as possible. Community access, and socialisation is extremely important for wellbeing, which is why it is of the utmost importance we ensure we do what we can to optimise accessibility. Here are some great tips from Spinal Cord Injury Australia to promote accessibility; - If you have a public accessibility concern, contact your local council and discuss with the disability officer - If planning a holiday, there are resources available to aid with accessible accommodation, visit spinalcordinjuryaustralia.org.au for more info - With summer approaching, beach season is almost upon us! There are accessible ramps and a directory of beaches in Adelaide with set times for access. you may also find at the SCIA website. Managing spinal cord injury can be extremely difficult, however at ANR we can assist with neuro physiotherapy targeting transfer practice, sitting/ standing balance, shoulder stability, cardiorespiratory fitness as well as many other aspects of SCI rehabilitation.
