19.01.2022 Amy is an aneurysm survivor the professional communications manager who works in Adelaide and is mum to two young daughters, felt progressively worse during December 2019 but couldn’t work out what was going on. In December I felt really terrible I had headaches, and I just wasn’t feeling quite right, and I had lower back pain so I thought it was musculoskeletal. Some people were saying perhaps it was a disc bulge. My body had always been quite strong, and I’d always st...ayed pretty fit and healthy. The constant headache was the unusual symptom looking back I endured it throughout the month but just kept pushing on." 18.01.2022 The NRF is proud to be the recipient of funds raised by STRONG ENOUGH TO LIVE. Cherrie Adams & Marty Adams' son Christopher Critter Adams sadly passed away from brain cancer on 19th November 2015. Cherrie has written a book, Critters Choice, which will be launched over 2 events on the 25th and 27th September. All proceeds from this book will be donated to the NRF. ... Cherrie said, When our youngest son Christopher (Critter) died on 19th November 2015 from brain cancer, our world was forever changed. I struggled to understand how this otherwise healthy 26-year-old could no longer be with us. So many of his last 11 months on Earth were spent having choices about his health being made for him. I wrote this book initially to channel my grief, but it eventually wrote itself into a story of hope, love, loss, Life and Death. My intention was that by reframing the actual events, I would be able to offer Critter the empowerment and choices that he had been deprived of by his disease. Each ticket includes a copy of the book, a drink and nibbles at the Saracens Head Hotel. Buy your tickets now!

04.01.2022 Today is Childhood Brain Cancer Awareness Day. It is estimated that around 100 children aged 0-14 years are diagnosed with brain cancer each year and that an estimated 36 children will die from brain cancer in 2020. Childhood brain cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in Australian children.... The NeuroSurgical Research Foundation is proud to support childhood brain cancer research at the Centre for Cancer Biology, University of South Australia. Research Associate Dr Mel Tea is focused on medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumour in children, frequently occurring in early childhood before the age of five. Treatment for medulloblastoma involves surgical resection, radiation of the brain and spine, and chemotherapy. The five-year survival rates have improved over the last 20 years, however unsurprisingly, exposure of the developing brain to chemotherapy and radiotherapy has detrimental life-long side effects. These include neurological and auditory deficits, secondary cancers and hormonal dysfunction, as well as non-physical deficits such as learning difficulties and psycho-social issues. As a result, Dr Tea says that finding new, less toxic targeted therapies for medulloblastoma is desperately needed. We have identified a new therapeutic target for medulloblastoma, and new experimental drugs for this target that show great promise as a potential new therapy for medulloblastoma. Our aim is to assess this potential new therapeutic approach in advanced preclinical models of medulloblastoma. Successful outcomes will provide impetus for future clinical trials for medulloblastoma treatment, she said.
