Due to its attachments to the medial cuniform and base of the 1st metatarcel it is an EVERTOR of the FOREFOOT 2. It will act to slow down the movement of forefoot inversion during pronation (Flattening of the foot)... THE PROBLEM.... A foot that wouldn't flatten In this case, progress into improving pronation in the foot had been limited despite foot mobilisation and use of wedges to assist in moving the bones of the feet... JOINTS ACT, MUSCLES REACT So, we went back in more detail to the mechanism of injury and found that the strain was more behind the ankle than your common ankle sprain. This led us to think outside of the box... What could be stopping the foot from coming out of a supinated position if not the bones? 19.01.2022 PLANTAR FASCIITIS? SORE FEET? FLAT FEET? Sorness under the foot or in the plantar fascia region often goes hand in hand with flat feet. A foot that stays flat during walking often means that the tissue under the foot is under constant strain or is maintained in a constantly long position as it doesn't have time to shorten before the foot lands again. Over time this can create pain, inflammation and tissue damage.... FOOT MECHANCIS MATTER Here we are demonstrating one of the methods we use to get muscles lengthening and contracting by moving the bones into the correct or a more desirable position. We use wedges to ensure the right parts of the feet maintain contact with the floor and the right muscles contract. As you can see, as I rotate my pelvis,femur and tibia to the left..this rotation filters down into the ankle and in turn creates an arch into the foot. The creation of this arch gives those permantently lengthened plantar tissues a chance to shorten and have a break from being under constant tension. Taken 6 months apart, these scans show an exceptional improvement in weight distribution, balance and just simply connection to the outside world. 13.01.2022 Today we did something really cool!! Theo got to try out his first pair of Vivo Barefoot shoes ( and you can see how happy he is with them ) Plus.. GEEKY SCIENCE TIME FOR KIDS... We are trying an experiment .... We have measured his foot pressures using our state of the art AMCube footplate... 09.01.2022 Fantastic change during a session today!!! Notice how there is more foot contact, better weight distribution, mass has shifted forwards and is more centred and the ball of the right big toe has found the floor again ... In static stance, this person was good at hiding what was really happening. Just looking at the foot scan you may think.. "yes yes ok, 60% of the weight is left". However this person has RIGHT hip pain and right back pain. It was only when I looked at her gait I could see more clearly what was happening... You see... Your body cannot hide in gait..there isn't enough time during each step...about 0.6- 0.8 seconds actually. It wasn't that their mass was left... It was HOW it was left. Actually, during their gait the pelvis only shifted centre to right and back again (never moving left). Instead, to allow her to keep functioning, the ribs and head were shifted left to compensate and allow her to continue managing her body. The tissues and joints on the right hip were only able to experience a lengthened position, never getting a chance to move left, shorten and have a break from carrying the load. The tissues and joints in the back were only experiencing a closed position, never getting a chance to open and decompress. Some regular practice of the provided movement drill will provide their body with a better movement experience that will begin to carry over into everyday life. 09.01.2022 A single muscle just might not be doing what you think it is... and may be capable of so much more A single muscle that attaches to bone with three dimensional... potential is at the mercy of the movement of those bones. For instance, take the glute, always a useful example as most everybody knows what it is supposed to do. The anatomy book says that the glute extends, abducts and externally rotates the hip. With the hip in this position the glute must be short in all three dimensions and so to stretch it we simply flex, adduct and internally rotate the hip.... a spectrum of opposites. AND YET in the human gait cycle the hip rarely attains these two three dimensional shapes, what this does mean is that for the vast majority of a stride, the hip is not doing either of these two described motions..... but it is doing what it needs to do in order to accommodate the required position of the whole body. In these moments it is doing any three of six available motions.... This suggests that in the other phases of the walking cycle, the glute must be lengthening in some dimensions of hip motion while shortening in others (since it is only fully short or fully long at just two moments). For instance you can fully shorten the glute by extending, abducting and externally rotating your hip and then simply change one of the movement dimensions to be the opposite (say hip IR) and all of a sudden you are now asking the glute to do something weird (/different?). Or not ... since glutes and hips have been doing this since the dawn of mankind when man started walking upright and moving around the planet. Muscles simply respond to bone and joint motion... we should focus our attention there and worry less about the tissue. Tissue is compromised only where joint motion is limited. And the full tissue expression is available when joint capacity is optimised. 05.01.2022 It is AMAZING what one can achieve when they are given a little nudge to become more self aware and tune into how they move and hold themselves. This client has worked hard over the last two months working on two things: 1. Learning how to transfer their weight/ centre of mass out of their heels into a more centered position whilst keeping their body stacked. 2. Re-learning how to pronate their right foot properly and take weight through the leg again... Then we combined them together :-) How did we do this? 1. First of all we had to teach them how to create a stacked posture- this means they needed to start to re-learn how to find a position where their head, rib cage and pelvis were all on top of each other and able to move using correct spinal mechanics. 2. We taught them how to pronate their foot properly using specific rehabilitation exercises and rehabilitation #AiM wedges. 3. Once they were able to achieve a stacked posture and a pronating foot, the two movement explorations were combined. The intention being to create an experience whereby the client could bring their mass forwards and over the correctly pronating right foot. Which scan do you think will place the body in a more centered and ultimately more comfortable position? Try loading 40% of your weight into your left heel and see what you can feel happening or loading elsewhere. OR, if you find you already have lots of weight in one heel, see what happens if you balance this out. 04.01.2022 My movement exploration for today consisted of a combination of Kettlebell Swings,Turkish Get ups and single arm swings. Mixed into this were some #findingcentre Movement drills. I was able to feel when I was losing my connection to the ground in my right heel and through my right hip. ... Using two movements- one to assist with better hamstring loading and one to help find and better utilise my foot tri-pod I was quickly able to give my body a better movement pattern to work with in the next sets. (You can spot these in the video) This allowed for more fluid and powerful swings and more controlled and smooth get ups. As I explore and practice these further over the coming weeks I should see the newly available joint movements become more easily accessible and my body naturally gravitate to using them.. 02.01.2022 TODAY: Exploring mindful movement whilst training. Session Exercise Explorations 100 Snatches 20kg 100 Swings 28kg... 10 TGU 28KG It felt good to get moving again and get the heart rate up with snatching. Nice and steady 10 per minute for 10 rounds. BUT... The main intention of today's session was to explore how my swings felt and what my limit was in terms of movement efficiency and movement quality. You will notice that there are various movements slotted in between swing sets. If the video was slower you would see that the sets were different length and reps. So, rather than doing sets of ten, resting and going again... I simply swang until i felt like I lost my smoothness and stopped. Then, using specific movemens that I know help improve my movement and efficiency I was able to reset each time and slowly build up the number I could do. Saturday it was 5 with 24kg, Sunday it was 12 with 24kg. Today it was 14 with 28kg. Tomorrow....
