24.01.2022 What we’re reading: Snapdragon by Kat Leyh, a graphic novel for middle readers, which is a staff section favourite alongside Lucy Knisley’s Stepping Stones. There’s a little more spookiness in Snapdragon, but it’s also a really satisfying story about growing up and finding out who you are and what you can do. Good stuff!

23.01.2022 What we’re reading: Toto Among the Murderers, an atmospheric slice of student life in 1973, when just about every peril could befall a young woman living in the margins. A novel inspired by the author’s own brush with the infamous serial killers, Fred and Rosemary West. I love reading stories which situate the reader in the context where historic events occurred, so this ticks a lot of boxes! -Anne

20.01.2022 Today’s Bookface is a new biography on Vida Goldstein, the first woman to stand for Australian parliament in 1903. Suffragette, politician and tireless campaigner for equality, she also had excellent hats! Penguin Books Australia

17.01.2022 A bit of excitement this morning as the shop became a location for an upcoming film. You may even catch a glimpse of a few staff members in the final cut!

17.01.2022 What we’re reading: The Animals In That Country by Laura Jean McKay. Out earlier this year, this novel pricked my ears because it’s (in part) a post-apocalyptic road trip tale where ‘zooflu’ has swept the population, enabling humans to understand what animals are saying. The cacophony drives most folks insane, unable to filter the information streaming from the mouths and mouthparts of wallabies, crocodiles, housecats and blowflies. When Jean’s son kidnaps her granddaughter and heads for the coast, she sets out to find them with Sue the dingo alongside. It’s thought-provoking, frank and unsentimental, a really outstanding Australian debut. -Anne Scribe

17.01.2022 Vale Ron Davidson. Beloved local author, Fremantle legend and friend of New Edition Bookshop. We wish to extend our condolences to his family and those in the community who are grieving his absence, as we are. His commitment to Fremantle could never be forgotten. Thanks to Fremantle Press for this apt photograph.

12.01.2022 What we’re reading: Luster by Raven Leilani. An insightful, stiletto-sharp observation on life in contemporary New York as a black woman. Edie meets her older white boyfriend Eric at a tipping point in her life, and becomes enmeshed in his suburban family through a series of mishaps. It’s a minefield of sexual and racial politics, occasionally humourous and always twisted. If you like Kiley Reid and Sally Rooney with a dash of body horror and erotica you’ll be into Luster too. -Anne Picador books

12.01.2022 Recently we enjoyed the launch of maar bidi: next generation black writing, an anthology of poetry, essays, short stories and memoir from a diverse group of young black writers. It’s compiled and edited by local academics Elfie Shiosaki and Linda Martin, a journey through style, form and meaning to the experience of being a young person of colour in a conflicted world. Cover artwork by local artist Kambarni. Magabala Books

11.01.2022 Staff Pick: Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson, a short novel about a strange summer which will make you think. When Lillian takes on a nannying position for her old boarding school roommate, it’s a surprise to learn first that Madison has married a very wealthy politician and second, become stepmother to two highly strung children who burst into flames when they’re agitated. It will keep you reading to see what Wilson does with this plot! Text Publishing

09.01.2022 What we're reading: There's no Such Thing as an easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura, follows a young woman in Tokyo with career burn out who is searching for something simple to keep a regular income. 02.01.2022 A lived experience like no other, Emerson Whitney’s memoir Heaven is a kaleidoscopic whirl of intellectual sensory nonfiction which overturns what it means to grow up and situate yourself in the world outside of gender binaries. Unique, shimmering and perilous writing, great for fans of Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts. McSweeney's
