25.01.2022 We see New York's Central Park as having very close ties to what we do here at digital NFP. www.centralpark.com helped us get started, quite some time back. A reader has sent in a Central Park reference, she saw during one of her Kindle sessions. ... Revering what and why our Parks are and how they help us in just coping. Brisbane is blessed,
23.01.2022 Perhaps a tad late, but there is still time. A Meeting is to be convened in the Park at 4.00 this afternoon. It results from all of the good work by a clever Facebook page, New Farm Park Life. This afternoon, the informative and respected Brisbane Times will be there, taking notes. They will also be doing a photo shoot today promoting the Petition to save the Park from Council's proposed changes. NFPL Support Group will be at the entrance to New Farm Park near the Brunswick S...treet/Sydney Street roundabout. They suggest the bringing of friends and family and anyone who wants to join them in showing some Park love. It is believed that the Council has already re-considered one of the more contentious elements of their Proposal, involving vehicle access from Lamington Street. More later, much more.
23.01.2022 The western flank of the Park hosts not only the popular New Farm Junior Soccer Club, but some of the most aged and prolific Jacarandas. The 2020 blooms are in full flight and provide a nice vista from that eatery based Roundabout. The 2019 Jacaranda planting in that Roundabout will at sometime, be a major local and tourist attraction.... Harriet noted Neighbourhood fences and gardens are being used for other important purposes.
23.01.2022 Harriet sensed very few weekend anxieties among Park visitors. Why would there be, particularly given that plans to open up New Farm Park to highway status, involving new vehicle entrances etc., had been discarded. Community Groups and locals had been very loud and active in the convincing of Council that their proposal was just not a good idea. At least, they listened. Other planned changes are still at discussion levels. The Team did notice the almost weekly changes to good... friends, Coral Trees 1 & 2, located over in the mid-west section of the Park. They’ve been there for a very long time. The changes have been extreme. CT 1 has recovered from past years of issues and is now looking decidedly healthy. ...hairy, Tom offered. CT 2, sadly quite the opposite. Its time must nearly be up. A few pics of both, going back some time. Peninsula Flight Path noise level concerns are still being pressed at many levels. More on that matter later, but general thoughts to date suggest "...no one is listening". More soon.
18.01.2022 It wasn't quite weather perfect yesterday in the Park; numbers were lighter than usual. Next weekend perhaps. On their way, the Team came across any number of community reminders of the feelings across the Peninsula on matters of Flight Path noise. This digital join-up initiative was found on a Cutters Landing landmark. The well organized crusade for a flight path backdown from Aviation Authorities is vigourous, involving, Harriet heard, all tiers of Government. Further chatter was also heard regarding the Park hosting weekend Pony Rides. Interesting.
17.01.2022 The Newstead Kindle Reader took a short break on Monday to take in and record some of the weather extremes hitting much of SE Queensland. It's been an eventful week. The Park is relishing the rainfall. Travelers on the CityCat had a better view than most, scooting along the Bulimba Reach.
16.01.2022 Levels of community frenzy have been the order of this past week. Just last Thursday, we heard of a serious but unsurprising backdown from our local Council in regards to a proposal to upgrade our Park to "drive through" status. It was proposed that a new vehicular entrance, from Lamington Street, over near the Powerhouse, would be put in place. Community angst and concern soon put an end to that. As Harriet noted, "...at least they listened".... Another Posting shortly. This is on ongoing Airport Flight Path matters affecting the Peninsula and across the river, on community noise levels. Levels not seen or heard before. Brisbane's Lord Mayor has weighed in into the matter, a tad dismissive of the concerns raised by concerned residents. He referenced "...the economy". More later.
13.01.2022 New Farm and its Park will take centre stage this weekend, with some serious Forums being held to discuss important local issues. This Saturday, the 14th, sees a gathering on Flight Path issues, including the presence of BAC Officials and then the Council's proposed logistics affecting the operations of the Park itself. They're are both at the Powerhouse. Harriet will be covering both events.... She has noted already that BAC has advised that the airport is currently operating at 40% plane capacity (number of flights), and 20% passenger capacity. New Farm is currently experiencing only a fraction of the noise it can expect in the future. Also, drive through proposals for the Park sound ambitious.
12.01.2022 ".. verdant, just verdant", Tom offered, as his first thoughts this morning. With recent rains, the Park looks a picture. Weekend and holiday crowds will likely be soon back to normal. That said, Harriet noted that rain and fog brings out some of the best in NFP. There has been an interesting development in the proposal of having weekend Pony rides in the Park. That later.
10.01.2022 "....the filmy veil of greenness that thickens as we gaze". Beautiful words from Dorothea Mackellar. Never more obvious with the welcome rains over the weekend and more on the way. The lawns, the shrubs even the trees in the Park have adapted so well and so quickly. Rarely seen pools of water, laced with fallen blooms, were everywhere.
10.01.2022 It was quite the tumultuous week for the Park. The much less than lauded initiative from the Brisbane City Council to have a look at the operational logistics on how New Farm Park functions, have now been put on hold. The contentious issue raised and aired by locals and many others, was the proposal to open a vehicle access arrangement via Lamington Street, over near the Powerhouse. A drive-through New Farm Park. An orderly but very well organized public Meeting took place... at the Sydney Street entrance, on Thursday last. The event was well covered by local media outlets. The outcome ? Mid afternoon word went out that the Council's proposal for this vehicle logistical adjustment was to be discarded. "...makes sense", said Lizzie G., " ...they should have asked first". It has been sometime since the local Peninsula Community has expressed such strong opinion, on any matter, but New Farm Park is a much loved facility shared by so many; over 25,000 per week. They saw what was planned and didn't like it. The Local Councillor should and will take something out of it.
09.01.2022 It was a typical busy NFP Sunday today; glorious weather and big crowds. Coincidentally, a political presence was noted. A State Election is to held later in the month, with major Parties officially launching Campaigns earlier today. These committed supporters love their politics, Harriet was told. They had many onlookers intrigued and impressed. We'll be providing some local coverage of the Campaign over the next couple of weeks. Interest is high.
09.01.2022 After a sweep of the Park yesterday, Harriet took the Team across to the Brisbane Portrait Prize Exhibition, with the nearby Powerhouse hosting this prestigious Annual Event. She was told it has attracted quite huge numbers; it ends soon. There are some seriously talented people in our midst. Identities around New Farm were even represented. Harriet's favourite was Jun Chen's portrait of ex Lord Mayor, Sallyanne Atkinson. Artist Chen is well known in NFP circles, with his pa...inting of the seasonal Jacaranda, one of his best. Tom liked the Packers' Prize. More soon.
06.01.2022 ...under surveillance, has been the Team’s ongoing strategy on this 2019 Jacaranda planting on a nearby local Roundabout. Harriet sees it eventually to be an absolute New Farm icon; a tourist attraction. Well done to those involved. For its second season thus far, no purple blooms are to be seen, backdropped here by one of Park’s longest serving and prolific Jacarandas. Next year.... Lunch was taken in this charming nearby coffee shop
03.01.2022 Much has been written on matters of enhanced Airplane flight path noise, affecting residents on the Peninsular and across the river in Bulimba. Levels of angst have resulted in Petitions being put together to demand that things are explained. Numbers signing up are large and Members of Parliament have been approached for assistance. Our local My Village News has given the matter excellent exposure and coverage. Two of our NFP Team live in Moray Street and have noticed chang...es. Harriet was told it comes as a result of the increasing usage of the recently opened new Runway at Brisbane Airport. This clip was sent in by a seriously concerned New Farmer. More later.
02.01.2022 Two Brisbane digital dailies announced yesterday, details of what appears to be some important and perhaps appropriate Brisbane City Council strategies, of just where New Farm Park, the seriously popular New Farm Park, is heading. Both logistical and even structural changes are being mooted. Understandably, public opinion and thoughts are being sought and they will be divided. Proposals include the establishment of a drive through arrangement featuring the adjacent Powerho...use access points and a new vehicle entry point in Brunswick Street. Raised pedestrian platforms across the ring-road are also a part of discussions. We will be approaching popular local Councillor, Vicki Howard , for her thoughts . More details are on the website homepage www.newfarmpark.com.au. **pics from The Courier Mail.
