25.01.2022 Simple Hand Exercises to Maintain Strength and Flexibility. When you think of hand exercises you think of squeezing a ball or a hand gripper. There are more specific exercises that can help stabilize the finger joints and stretch the soft tissues around the palm and thumb. If you have some knuckle tenderness try these; 1. Work the tiny muscles that reside in the hand. (The Intrinsic Muscles). Hold the fingers out straight and press them against each other. Press them toge...ther for 5 seconds and then spread them apart. The picture shows using a rubber band to resist the stretch apart but it is the pressing the fingers together that helps just as much. 2. Stretch of the Lumbrical muscles. For this you need to bend the tip to the very top of the palm. Hold the stretch then slowly straighten the fingers out from a bent position. 3. Letter L position of the thumb. Did you know that thumb joint replacement surgery is a very common operation. The letter L exercise helps to open out the palm and prevent the thumb muscles from tightening and restricting the movement of the thumb joint. See more

23.01.2022 New Owner of New Farm Physiotherapy Rebecca Duhig has decided it was time to retire and with more than a modicum of wistfulness, will be saying goodbye in a professional sense to all the dear New Farm locals. Louise McDonnell is taking over the helm and has hit the ground running this week. Louise completed her Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy at the University of Hertfordshire in 2006 and since that time has worked in both the private and public sectors. Her wealth of experience, her caring approach and her focus on gaining results will mean she will be a great asset to the New Farm area. We wish you well Louise, as Rebecca signs off for the last time.

21.01.2022 Sleep - 5 Tips for Better Sleep 1. Be regular - going to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time, weekdays, weekends and even after a bad nights sleep. 2. Dim your light and turn off your screens. One hour before bed dim your lights, turn off the TV, computers, and phones. 3. Be cool. Cool yourself and your bedroom down before going to bed. ... 4. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol fragments your sleep, waking you more times during the night and blocks REM sleep. Caffeine interferes with deep sleep and falling asleep. 5. Don’t stay in bed if you can’t fall asleep. Meditate to quiet and clear your mind, or turn down the lights in another room and read until you are sleepy. See more

21.01.2022 The Year of the Gut In Naturopathic Astrology 2020 is the year of the gut. Well okay there is no such thing as Naturopathic Astrology. If there was though 2020 along with every other year would be the year of the gut, because in Naturopathic medicine the gut is the boss of the body, the portal to our overall health. So with that in mind I started 2020 with a bit of a workout in the kitchen, which resulted in the preparation of a heap of gut friendly food - Coconut yoghurt, c...hicken bone broth and a spontaneous what’s in the fridge and the spice rack Kraut. Sauerkrauts are always such interesting and fun things to prepare and, with a couple of weeks of expectation, too taste because with a little bit of imagination you can so easily change the taste and texture of them. This one, the first of 2020, was made with green and red cabbage, brown and red onion, turmeric, ginger, garlic, orange and purple carrot, grated pumpkin with skin, grated orange sweet potato with skin, beetroot, celery salt, caraway seeds, nigella seeds, black mustard seeds, cumin and coriander seeds, fennel and fenugreek seeds.

20.01.2022 The Upside of Self Isolation A recent article in a local paper talked about the enormous weight loss achieved by a fellow self-isolating at his property in the country. The reason for his loss was attributed to the massive increase in time spent gardening. Instead of his usual gym exercises, he used his time productively with shoveling, digging holes and carrying compost. Planting, re-potting and rearranging plants are all highly satisfying activities both physically and m...entally. One only has to stand in the queue at Bunnings to see the number of people who think exactly the same thing. A few hours devoted to the garden or your balcony pots is precious time well spent. Just a quick word on these photos. The lady on the left is wearing gloves. Wise move at a time when we are all aware of pathogens. Note also her straight back and deep squat. I should think her knees are in good order. Check out the gardener on the right, no gloves, bendy back. Finally, it looks like he is wearing very nice going out shorts. "Courageous" as Sir Humphrey would say. See more

18.01.2022 A Deliciously Healthy Desert - Mixed Berries and Pepitas with Kefir, Raw Honey and Lime Juice - If you are looking for a healthy dessert that tastes truly delicious and is simple to make this might fit the bill for you. ... So you can change the taste and texture of the dessert from time to time I’ve included a few optional extras - coconut flakes and goji berries to add a chewy crunch, cacao nibs for slightly bitter taste, pinenuts are sweeter than pepitas. Ingredients: Kefir (an organic full cream milk one if possible - like Mungalli Creek Biodynamic Kefir), Mixed Berries such as blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries, raw honey, pepitas, goji berries, lime zest and juice Optional Extras: 1. Cacao nibs, coconut flakes, goji berries (to add a bit crunch), 2. Pinenuts instead of pepitas or a combination of cashew, walnut and almonds works really well, 3. Coconut or cashew yoghurt instead of kefir if you are vegetarian/vegan or you just want a change. How to Make: 1. In a bowl, put 1-2 cups of mixed berries and sprinkle over with pepitas. 2. Pour in 1/2 cup of Kefir and drizzle 1 teaspoon of honey through the kefir and berries followed by the zest of a thick slice of lime. 3. Finally squeeze the juice of the slice of lime over the top. 4. If you have time make the dessert a few hours and refrigerate, so it’s nice and cold before you eat it.

06.01.2022 New Farm Physio will remain open for the time being but we will be guided by new directives as they come to hand. The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) posted the following on their website today. Monday 23rd March The APA has received the following advice from the Federal Minister for Health, The Hon Greg Hunt: The Australian Minister for Health has today confirmed that ALL allied health businesses can continue working and are encouraged to do so.... In addition he has indicated that they are now developing full allied health telehealth options within the week for allied health along with all other health and medical services. This will be part of a staged plan. Face to face services for many remain vital so where possible, we encourage you to continue. I thank you for your courage, dedication and care, the Minister has said. The APA continues to monitor this changing situation closely and will provide you with advice and guidance as it becomes available.

03.01.2022 These photos illustrate knee alignment. Two of the photos are of optimal alignment and one is sub-optimal. The optimal knees are those where the knee is facing forward, the inner quad (VMO) is well defined and obviously working and the foot is also pointing in the correct direction. People who have inwardly directed knees are more prone to hip, knee and foot problems. It is important to have a look at the way you stand, check out how the knee behaves when you climb steps ...or hills. Strength and function can be massively improved if you approach your exercise with correct form. Fixing alignment is important and with some it may just be a matter of watching and correcting pedantically over time. For others, factors such as residual stiffness in the foot following ankle sprain, weakness in the gluteal muscles of the hip, over-activity of the lateral quadriceps can make improvement very difficult without expert help. Physios are well placed to sort out where the weaknesses are, where particular joints are tight and not moving properly and how you can implement theses corrections into your daily activity.
