25.01.2022 How many arms can go around the Earth to protect it Frida So thrilled to be supporting our youngest citizens to have a voice and be passionate participants at today's School's Strike for Climate Change rally! The children demonstrated a commitment to changing the way we protect our living planet. They marched with over 20K other citizens to voice their concerns and take responsibility for change.... As one of our Lenah Valley students remarked "They are marching to save the planet ..." Rex Thank you to our Friday families for supporting this endeavour and to our students for their dedication to our planet Earth.

21.01.2022 Join our wonderful team tomorrow to find out more about our Inquire 5 program!

21.01.2022 Congratulations to our Lenah Valley children, staff and families for their beautiful, engaging and authentic 'Exhibition of Learning'. Today marked the end of a year long inquiry titled 'Encounters for a happy Earth' ... It has become more difficult to connect with nature in our modern world. The dirt of the earth is concealed by roads, walls and barriers. Our food comes in packaging from the supermarket and our lives are lived in close proximity to our screens. We forget th...e simple joys of a childhood spent outdoors and we take for granted in our busy lives the natural riches accessible from our doorstep. Yet we are reminded in everyday encounters that children are instinctively connected to nature. The collection of seed pods, rocks and leaves discovered in a pocket, the irresistible appeal of a puddle of water, the challenge of a tree to climb and the adopted insect companion. The relationship between children and nature is free, unconditional and has no limits. In our school context, educators identified few opportunities to experience ‘wild spaces’. Although we are in close proximity to local bushland, accessibility by foot was not considered a viable option for the children. Rather, we invested time exploring our suburban locale and discovered much more than we could have anticipated. Overflowing passionfruit vines, leaves of every hue, trees to climb, valuable collections of organic materials to study. For the children, even this brief encounter was valuable; an invitation to experience the freedom of the outdoors beyond the walls of the classroom. Our explorations precipitated a myriad of possibilities for further research. These mini adventures along Giblin Street opened up the possibilities of building a relationship with the natural environment; to foster connection, belonging and a sense of responsibility towards our local environment and ultimately, towards our Earth. 'No one is too small to make a difference' - Greta Thunberg Please take the time to enjoy the photo album of our exhibition.

08.01.2022 "The school we are talking about is not the school you are familiar with in the past, but something that you can hope for." Loris Malaguzzi, Founding philosopher of the Reggio Emilia Educational Project. 02.01.2022 Yesterday we capped off a very busy and inspiring week in Hobart by attending a full day seminar with the amazing Prof emerita Gunilla Dahlberg. Her thought provoking words challenged us to consider more deeply values and ethics in ECE and to continue with our commitment to quality through relationships, listening and ongoing dialogue. Last Monday, a group of Inquire 5 children presented a documentation panel to the Vos construction team. This panel documents part of the chi...ldren’s project on encountering cranes in the city. (It can be visited at the corner of Murray and Davey Streets). Please walk by and have a look if you are in Hobart! We are passionate about making visible the children’s thinking, collaborating with members of our community and making deeper connections to place. We were also very fortunate to collaborate with ECA, as part of the national conference being held in Hobart last week. We were thrilled to host educational tours at both of our campuses and to share our beautiful environments, inquiry projects, documentation and journey with other educators from around Australia. Along with these visits we worked in partnership with ECA to film at our Battery Point service for an upcoming online module. We also hosted a visit from the generous and ever delightful Claire Warden! We are humbled to be able to work alongside peak industry bodies and educators from around the world to share our passion and commitment to Early Years Education in Australia. Thank you to ECA, B4 Early Years Coalition, Prof emerita Gunilla Dahlberg, Claire Warden, our Australian colleagues, staff and children for an incredible (but very busy!) week!

01.01.2022 Another incredible celebration of our year together! These photos are from our Preschool and Inquire 5 exhibitions at our Battery Point Campus. Each or our two class groups embarking on journeys of collaboration, investigation and discovery. The Preschool children coming together to explore the multiple possibilities which the languages of dance, music, sound and movement offer us.... The Inquire 5 children have continued to encounter the city of Hobart, with particular emphasis on those elements of our city which make it extraordinary - Cranes, The Cat and Fiddle, MONA/Dark Mofo and being part of a Crowd. Congratulations of all of the children, families and staff on another amazing year at New Horizons Preschool!
