25.01.2022 Hi everyone. The school is currently working on the following model for the planned staged return to school commencing Wk 3 (May 11). The decision to develop a roster based on students class and year groups where possible has been made based on the social aspect of school. Children want to be at school to see their friends. ... There has been some media around schools developing timetables based on family groupings but this is not a directive and the final decision making is at the discretion of the principal. If you have any comments or queries please direct them to Andrew Pryce (Principal) via telephone (4957 1168) or email ([email protected]). He'll be happy to listen to and address any concerns.

22.01.2022 CHANGES TO SUN SAFETY PROCEDURES Following last nights P and C meeting the school is proposing the following changes to the Sun Safety procedures. These changes are reflective of the communities views on Sun Safety whilst balancing the need for students to be physically active and engage in play.... REMAINDER OF THIS WEEK No changes, children are encouraged to wear hats. WEEKS 7-10, until the end of the school year. Every child wears a hat every break. Any hat is fine. It is not expected that parents purchase a new school hat if they do not have one at the moment. Students with no hat go to the library at recess and lunch. No exceptions. Teachers will check students on the way out to breaks and direct those without hats to the library. Library is to be unplugged, no tech. Board games, books, cards, lego etc. Students without hats will still engage in guided play but must go to guided play activities in the shade / COLA / Hall. Guided Play is teaching time and addresses curriculum outcomes. Sunscreen stations have been ordered through the melanoma foundation and will be set up if they arrive Teachers will educate students on the risks of sunburn. The effects of which are not immediate so we have to make this decision in order to protect them Encourage application of sunscreen before school and during school prior to breaks. 2021 As above, but school hats are required. New styles of hats to be investigated and sourced. Issues with the current hat makes them impractical for more vigorous physical activity. Hence, children take them off. The school has a contact that can access flexfit hats with embroidery. This requires P and C ratification as an alteration to the uniform. Sunscreen stands to be placed on the playground - already ordered but may not arrive in 2020 through the melanoma foundation.

17.01.2022 FUNDRAISING ALERT! And this is something out of the ordinary! Bare with us about the boring stuff... Our school is a polling station for council, state & federal government elections. ... A City of Newcastle council election was scheduled for 5 September. COVID-19 has put an end to that, and also a major fundraising opportunity for us. Local voters are amazing supporters of the Election Day sausage sizzle, coffee and cake stall we hold on these days. #democracysausage #COVID-19 means we can't raise funds in traditional ways right now. But, we have a plan! THIS YEAR, we are holding a virtual sausage sizzle! Think about the coin you'd normally drop on sausage sanga's, a few soft drinks and a sneaky cake or two for you and the kids when you vote at our polling station! Sure, you're not going to get the actual goods. But you are still supporting our fundraising efforts! The newly installed playground furniture and future upgrades are examples of what the P&C contributes fundraising efforts towards. Head to www.givenow.com.au/newlambtonsouth & make a small (minimum $5) contribution to our school. Essentially, the cost of a couple of snags! Please share the link with your friends & family, too. There's no time limit to support NLS. A virtual snag is yours any time! Thanks!

15.01.2022 For anyone keen to hear more from Pasi Sahlberg and his thought regarding education, this just dropped into the ABC's Conversations podcast series... https://podcasts.apple.com//podc/conversations/id94688506

13.01.2022 In short... stay tuned... Virtual meetings have never been possible for P&C Associations, as the Constitutions for P&C Associations have no enabler for virtual meetings. This means that the only way P&C Associations can make decisions is at face-to-face meetings at which a quorum of members is physically present. In the current circumstances of social distancing restrictions, this means P&C Associations are now unable to make key decisions, placing many P&C Association...s in a state of limbo. In response to this, P&C Federation has worked with legal advisers to draft an amendment to the constitution that would make virtual meetings possible. These amendments are now with the NSW Minister for Education for approval. The Minister’s office is aware of the urgency of this request. If the amendment allowing virtual meetings is approved, P&C Associations will be able to resume making key decisions during this unprecedented time. We will let our members know as soon as we receive the Minister’s response. If the proposed changes are accepted, tips and resources will be provided to P&C Associations to assist in implementing these changes.

11.01.2022 This year, the P & C plan to hold a pre-loved book sale, in conjunction with the local council elections in September (assuming all goes well). We welcome new and used books (in saleable condition) including: Graphic novels & comics Crime (Fiction and True)... Sci Fi Fantasy Thriller/Horror General Fiction Teen & Tween Fiction Picture Books Young Readers We cannot accept: Encyclopaedias Magazines (incl National Geographic, Australian Geographic) Repair manuals Really old cook books Text books Books unsold from other book sales Other highly specific books that have a low chance of sale If books are yellowed, torn, written in or with pages stuck together please recycle them rather than bringing them into us to do so. Can you please box them up and keep at home for now. Also, we’ll need helpers on the day to fill a roster at the sale. This will be organised closer to the date. If you can spare an hour or two, we’d greatly appreciate it.

President: Paul McLean VP: Emma McLean... 2nd VP: Shaun Grady Treasurer: John Garis Secretary: Blythe Scully We've found running meeting via Zoom is really convenient for parents that couldn't previously make the physical meetings - so if you would like to get involved & help out the new executive, it's a great time to jump in. We have a small core of regular members but really need to spread the involvement to so many more parents & carers. If you have any queries, hit us up via our FB page.

07.01.2022 A note from the school regarding last night's announcement to reopen... Dear Parents and Carers Tonight an announcement was made that students will return to full time learning as of Monday May 25.... We have identified over the past week that dropping students off at the designated gates is working wonderfully well. Picking students up in the afternoons is posing some issues with bottlenecking at the gates. To alleviate this problem we are proposing staggered start and finish times for Infants, K-2 and Primary 3-6. Infants times remain as normal Primary times are moved 20 minutes forward. This may allow primary students to depart and clear the site prior to infants students leaving the classrooms. OOSH will take primary students from 3pm. For primary students that need to wait for Infants students supervision will be provided by teachers until 3:25pm. Primary students will only use the Eastern side of the school for play breaks Infants will only use the Western side of the school for play breaks The canteen will operate with online ordering only available for all breaks. The operational hours are essentially unchanged in terms of supervision. The break times and finishing times for primary are the only changes. Any feedback please contact Andrew Pryce, Principal NLSPS PH 49571168 E [email protected]

07.01.2022 UPDATE: The footy boots we sent to Ngukurr School CEC were a huge hit! Thanks to everyone that got behind our footy boot drive! And a big thanks to GWS Giants for connecting us with this great community!

03.01.2022 Latest COVID update put out by the school.... 17 August 2020 ... Dear families/carers We have recently received updated advice from the Department of Education relating to COVID-19 restrictions for schools that must be implemented this week. A number of new measures have been introduced to reduce the risks posed by COVID-19 to our schools. The following will be implemented at New Lambton South effective immediately: - Vigilance in ensuring students and staff do not attend school or work if they are unwell - Students who are absent or sent home from school with flu like symptoms must be tested for COVID-19 - Absence explanations must be detailed and not just list unwell/sick - Students and staff must not return to school/work until they return a negative COVID-19 result and are symptom free for 24 hours - Schools must sight the negative COVID-19 test result prior to the student or staff member returning to school. This must be emailed to [email protected] BEFORE 9.00am on the day the student returns to school. - Woodwind and Brass section of our band is no longer able to run. Mrs Caban will be in contact with families. - Students are to stay within their cohort group (class, year group or stage) for all learning and extra-curricular activities, including sports, arts and physical activities. - 2021 Year 7 Orientation/taster lessons have been postponed until Term 4 - External provider Young Engineers will not be permitted on site for STEM lessons. - Group singing/chanting in groups are no longer permitted - The guidelines do not require schools to conduct widespread temperature screening or for anyone to wear a mask, however staff and students who feel strongly about wearing a mask will be accommodated by the school. Please note: Masks are to be supplied by families. - P and C meetings will continue to take place via ZOOM Please do not send your student to school if they are feeling at all unwell. We are extremely vigilant in monitoring children’s health and will ask for them to be picked up if they are presenting to the office even slightly unwell. Now is not the time to give them Panadol, send them to school and hope for the best. Further detailed information provided by the Department of Education is also attached. We acknowledge the strain these protocols may place on your families as we continue through uncertain times and keep everyone safe and we thank you for your understanding. Take Care Andrew Pryce Principal

03.01.2022 Just a quick P & C update. Until recently, we’ve been unable to conduct meetings safely, but the P & C Federation has now given the green light for meetings to be held via Zoom. We plan to have a Zoom P & C general meeting on Tuesday 21st July, being the 3rd Tuesday in the month (as per normal).... Currently P & C members will get a Zoom invitation leading up to that date, but if you are a non-member have no fear. We’ll put a call out closer to the date. Cheers

03.01.2022 Just posted to all parents & carers via Caremonkey from the school... DEAR PARENTS / CARERS PHASED RETURN TO SCHOOL... Many of you would be aware of the Premier’s messaging regarding the return of school for term 2. She has asked that where practical and possible, students remain at home for the next 2 weeks with lessons commencing on Wednesday 29 April. Our staff will be posting timetables for online learning including face to face lessons via zoom. If you need to send your child to school then school is open for supervision only. Students on site will be given the same delivery of lessons as those learning from home. Commencing May 11, students will be placed on a roster allowing for a staggered and gradual return to school. This roster will be communicated prior to 8 May. The roster is still being developed but the initial planning is based on class groupings attending. We recognise the important social aspect that school plays and as such believe that it will be more beneficial for students to be at school with their peer groups. ENHANCED SOCIAL DISTANCING PROCEDURES WEEKS 1 & 2 TERM 2 As we move to return children to school, we have revised a number of our procedures to minimise adult movements on the school grounds. They are as follows: - Weeks 1 and 2 of term, 29 April thru 8 May. Minimal students on site, skeleton staff on site. Parents are asked to drop students at the gates. If parents need to come into the school please inform the teacher on duty that your child is on site and then leave. Gates 1 and 4 only will be open. - Canteen will not be open - If you have sent your child to school but need to pick them up please contact the school by phone first. We will then ensure your child is waiting at the office upon your arrival. - Where possible payments to be made online only. - We ask that only one person comes into the administration building at any given time. If there is somebody being served by administrative staff will ask you to wait outside and will call you in. - Gate 4 will be the only gate open through the day CHILD PROTECTION ONLINE Teachers have been directed to schedule online learning via zoom throughout the week. In order to keep children and teachers safe we ask the following be implemented in regard to child protection. - Students are not to be online in their bedrooms, an open family space is required. - If a teacher schedules a zoom lesson for a small group and there is only one student present the lesson will be cancelled unless a parent can supervise their child for the full duration of the lesson. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to not only provide the best online teaching and learning experience possible, but develop our procedures to keep students and staff safe. Take Care Andrew Pryce Principal New Lambton South Public School [email protected]

02.01.2022 Now that we've had the constitution amended from the P & C Federation, we're able to hold our normal P & C meetings via Zoom. Our next meeting will be next Tuesday 21 July 2020 at 7pm. If you are a non-member & wish to attend, please email [email protected] with your details as an Intent to Attend & we'll send you the link. Please note that a couple members of the executive will be leaving the P & C at years end (child heading to high school), so please consider joining & helping out. Now's the time to learn a little about what we do.

02.01.2022 If you have already paid for your excursions etc & are now due for a refund, the school admin team will be releasing details on the process in the next week or so (once finalised) via the normal channels.

02.01.2022 7pm Tuesday night is rolling around quickly. If you haven’t sent an email to the P&C to gain access to the ZOOM link for the monthly meeting, don’t delay, get on it today!! Hope to see some new faces! There is a lot of great information being discussed tomorrow night, so join us... [email protected]
