16.01.2022 No words necessary. The raw emotions and energy say it all. via #feelinghomeagain Sometimes as a birth photographer, you end up having to blind shoot through... tears. This was definitely one of those times where I really had my fingers crossed that I was catching anything at all, I think the only one not crying was the dog! #birthwithoutfear #dontforgetdads
11.01.2022 Yes. Accurate.
07.01.2022 What information should we offer when parents decide to decline vitamin K? Most parents choose to give vitamin K but there may always be some who will decide to... decline this intervention. Sometimes these parents are given a hard time. What they are not always given is good information. Information about what they should look for in case their baby is the one in several thousand who experiences the unexpected bleeding that has come to be called ‘vitamin K deficiency bleeding’, or VKDB. So here's a list of the key things that we might want to suggest that parents look out for in babies who have not received vitamin K. This is for information / discussion purposes only, of course, and isn't intended to constitute or replace individualised midwifery or medical advice. Any parent who is concerned about their baby should seek appropriate advice. There is lots more about this and related issues in my book, Vitamin K and the Newborn. The book also goes through the evidence and is designed to help parents make the decision that is right for them, as well as to help care providers and birth workers better understand the evidence and the issues. If you are considering your options about vitamin K, I hope you'll find it useful. And there's lots more free information on my website. https://www.sarawickham.com/bo/vitamin-k-and-the-newborn-2/ #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #childbirth #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #pregnancy #newborn #vitamink #drsarawickham #birthbecomesher #empoweredbirthing #vitaminkandthenewborn
07.01.2022 I was surprised as to how few women received evidence-based care at birth. I'm so delighted to see this study published as hopefully, it will help us all to be ...more mindful of optimising women's opportunity to successfully breastfeed AND reduce PPH with all the profound benefits both of those outcomes ensure. This article 'Immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding after birth: A cross-sectional electronic survey', final version containing full bibliographic details is now available online and available on the Share Link a personalized URL providing 50 days' free access to the article. Anyone clicking on this link before November 02, 2019 will be taken directly to the final version of your article on ScienceDirect, which they are welcome to read or download. 06.01.2022 Home birth isn’t the right decision for every pregnancy. But, when the decision is made, it almost always is a very informed-decision.
04.01.2022 If you are planning a VBAC, read these stats: Your chance of having a vaginal birth after caesarean under obstetric led care is an average of just 46.9%. Under... midwife led care it is 61.2%. But if you birth at home (with a midwife) it is 72 - 87%! Thanks to Hazel Keedle for your presentation on 'Partnering with women:.midwives supporting women who have a homebirth after caesarean (HBAC). #hbacon2017 #vbac #hbac

02.01.2022 The publication of yet more poor journalism about induction of labour has led to another flood of people being concerned about the quality of information that w...omen and families are receiving. So I’m re-sharing this in case you’d like to share it on in turn. I see more comments, queries and concerns about induction of labour than about any other single pregnancy and birth-related topic. And even now I’m sometimes still shocked to hear and read some of the things that women and their families are told about the value, supposed benefits and risks relating to induction. Especially by those who are wanting them to agree to this and/or who have an interest in undermining women’s own knowledge and wisdom. It's too hard to put everything that women and their families need to know in one post (which is why I wrote a book!) but this graphic offers some of the key facts for anyone else who is concerned that their friends or colleagues are being given misinformation. Please feel free to share this pic. Induction of labour is absolutely the right decision for some women, and absolutely not the right decision for others. Some women are delighted that they had their labour induced, and some women regret this decision for decades. It is for those reasons that we encourage anybody who might be affected by this to get lots of information about induction of labour or any other birth intervention before making a decision. The mass media is not a good source of information about birth. Newspapers spin stories to make headlines and often fail to discuss the nuances and complexities of the issues. If you'd like to look at my book, 'Inducing labour: making informed decisions', then great. But there are other good books too and, like many of my colleagues, my primary concern is that people who need to make such decisions can get good information from a credible source and make the decision that is right for them. #midwife #midwifery #doula #informedbirth #birthdoula #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #positiveinduction #inducedlabour #induction #writersofinstagram #drsarawickham #birthright #childbirth www.sarawickham.com/books/inducing-labour
