20.01.2022 Wonthaggi Secondary College formed in 1988 when Wonthaggi Technical School and Wonthaggi High School merged. In 2018, the College celebrates its 30th Anniversary. We are extremely proud of the achievements of its students and staff over this time. With the anniversary and the construction of a new senior campus, the school community now has a unique and timely opportunity to consider a new title for the College, as it continues to support young people in the 21st century. T...here are a number of stages required to rename a school, in accordance with the Department’s school naming policy. We are at the initial stages of this process and wish to provide all in our school community with an opportunity to contribute, in considering and potentially implementing such a name change. We therefore encourage and welcome feedback from parents, carers, students, staff and the community on this naming proposal. We hope that the information below addresses most of the key points for such a decision. Your feedback is appreciated. Why change our name? Wonthaggi SC draws its students from across the Bass Coast area. We feel it is important that all in our community feel connected to our College, to share our pride in the school and our students’ achievements. Our College Council believes that the timing is right to consider a change. Key reasons include: WSC services the whole of the Bass Coast region, providing for students across dozens of towns. Students, and their families, from across the area would better associate with a new name, enhancing the community’s sense of ownership and pride. It is the only Government secondary school in Bass Coast Shire. In acknowledgment of the significant history of the College, and the location of the senior campus, we hope to retain the name Wonthaggi as a campus name. This would also be compliant with Department policy.
12.01.2022 UPDATE re Consideration of name change for Wonthaggi SC Thank you to everyone who has given feedback to our College Council regarding a potential name change for our College. There was a considerable amount of feedback expressed on Facebook, via email, petitions and regular mail. Additionally we sought feedback from students and staff. We are indeed very proud that so many community members endorse the importance of government schooling in our area. On Monday August 27, our... WSC Council met to determine if there was community support for a name change at this time. After considering the wide and varied views represented in the feedback, our WSC Council would like to advise our College community that: At this time, a ‘name change’ will not coincide with the construction of the new Senior Campus. It is anticipated that the new Campus will simply be referred to as Wonthaggi SC (Senior Campus). The College Council remains committed to advocating for the presence of a government school in the Phillip Island / San Remo area to support the hundreds of students who are in our community and live the other side of the Anderson roundabout. Upon becoming successful in creating a Junior Campus in the Phillip Island area, the College Council agreed that a name change would then be a priority. At that time, an updated College name would reflect its students and their campuses. Our thanks also to our College Council for their dedication and support of this process. They have had the courage to represent publicly their desire to address community inclusiveness for students and at the same time been prepared to consider the views of many of our supporters. We absolutely respect the tradition and history of our school. The challenge remains to maintain that pride and at the same time embrace, and advocate, for its very exciting future. Kind regards, Darren Parker & Geoff Robertson WSC Principal & WSC Council President
10.01.2022 HOW CAN YOU PROVIDE FEEDBACK? Please submit by Monday August 13, 2018.
09.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who has given feedback regarding a potential name change for Wonthaggi SC. Our College Council will now determine if further steps in the process will be undertaken (as per the official process required by the Department of Education). We remain very proud that we have so many community members endorsing the importance of government schooling in our area. Our College Council would like to provide feedback on some of the commonly raised issues. ... UNIFORM: There are no plans to change the uniform, regardless of a name change or not. If a new name and logo were adopted, there would be a significant transition period. Students in our school will not be discriminated against on the basis of an older style logo (in fact the provision a cloth patch would be investigated to assist here in updating uniform for families if required). NEW SENIOR CAMPUS: The reality is that the construction of our new senior campus means that we do have to make adjustments to our current naming arrangements. It cannot be the McBride Campus when it is located at a different address. Changes will have to occur in many settings both in terms of record keeping and stationery (for example). PHILLIP ISLAND / SAN REMO CAMPUS? The establishment of our new senior campus is not the only reason for considering a change. Like many in our community, we believe that a government school presence in the Phillip Island/San Remo area would be ideal. Around one third of our current students travel from destinations the other side of the Anderson roundabout. Additionally our enrolment continues to grow. If we could assist in the creation of such a setting by coordinating a junior campus in that area, it would be something we would be very proud to be involved in. We are not representing this as any form of official announcement, but rather are indicating that we believe we can support such an exciting opportunity for young people in the area. It might be a ‘dream’ at the moment but remember that not too long ago the provision of a new senior campus was also viewed in a similar way. A Wonthaggi SC campus in San Remo? That could be a naming challenge indeed! We will keep our College community informed as to how the process progresses from this point. Please be assured that we absolutely respect the tradition and history of our school. Our challenge is to maintain that pride and at the same time embrace its very exciting future. Thank you!
